Greenman 06-03-2007, 09:23 PM Thats going to be a killer neck. By all meens show more pics.
James Hart 06-03-2007, 09:47 PM Is that the other board Larry did with mine?
Amazing choices of woods... the fretless 6 I have planned for it all is:
Bubinga top, back & board (board is acrylized)
Butternut core
Wenge/bubinga neck
... and it's been dubbed "The Bubinga Bass" too :ninja:
iamlowsound 06-03-2007, 10:25 PM That thing is going to be HEAVY. But it is really nice looking.

Luke Sheridan 06-04-2007, 05:15 AM Actually, its pretty light. I was surprised as everyone when fit the neck in. I'll get more pics of the neck up today. James, yes, that's the same board.
RIM Basses 06-04-2007, 11:45 AM sweet looking bass Luke
jnprather 06-04-2007, 11:00 PM Freaking sweet! I love Bubinga...
Luke Sheridan 09-18-2007, 03:31 PM Both these basses have been put off by my basement remodel, which is finally complete. (Pat on back)
This Spalted Beech bass was written off once before when the planer had its way with the top. I bought a thickness sander and was able to revive it.

The core wood is Ash that I salvaged from the cutoff bin at the lumber yard. I've never seen Ash with this coloring and I'm not sure what the condition is called.

The bubinga fiver is strung up, just needs to have its nut polished, some gold screws acquired and final setup. This one WILL get wooden knobs and I'll post steps on that process, which I almost have down.
Here it is last week.

cricketfever32 09-18-2007, 03:36 PM did you make that bridge on the bubinga 5'er?
Luke Sheridan 09-18-2007, 03:51 PM Nope. Google ETS-hardware. Prepare to wait.
Basschair 09-18-2007, 04:29 PM Prepare to wait.

tjclem 09-18-2007, 04:51 PM Nope. Google ETS-hardware. Prepare to wait.
Big wait! :D :D Nice pieces!

I notice you get a lot from Norbert. I got my quote in about two days and my bridge in about two weeks but that was 1 1/2 years ago. He must be busier now.
erikbojerik 09-18-2007, 07:19 PM Yeah..."spalt" and "planer"...yikes! Glad you were able to bring it back from the dead.
Luke Sheridan 09-18-2007, 07:24 PM Eric: Any idea on the coloration in the Ash?
Larry Davis 09-19-2007, 06:48 AM Hi Luke, like maple, ash has a darker colored heart due to extractives, but ash heartwood can also be variegated. Your ash is primarily heartwood....
erikbojerik 09-19-2007, 08:18 AM That ash is really interesting....I wouldn't have guessed heartwood, I was leaning toward a mild spalt. The grain (pores) looks really straight to me and cross-cuts the variegation situation...but then again, that's how black limba works as well.
Luke Sheridan 09-19-2007, 12:48 PM Cool. Thanks for getting t the "heart" of the matter.
Larry Davis 09-19-2007, 01:20 PM Do a search on "olive ash" because that's the top shelf of variegated ash heart. It's found in some European black ash logs. Not really olive of course, just a trade name.
FunkyFlashFive 09-19-2007, 05:21 PM how much does one of those ets bridges go for?
Luke Sheridan 10-31-2007, 03:04 PM Well this one took way longer than I anticipated, but its done. As promised, I've uploaded a tutorial (http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=377479) for making the knobs.

Luke Sheridan 11-01-2007, 10:06 PM Sweet Lord luv a duck.
I'm stealing this quote.
Thanks, everyone!
Beautiful. Absolutely beautiful.
DanielM 11-02-2007, 06:22 AM that's a lot of Bubinga... but it is gorgeous. I really like the "Sheridan" stamped (is it stamped?) on the bridge, very cool.
Luke Sheridan 11-13-2007, 08:34 PM So my seven year-old came in and asked what i was doing. Said I was clamping on a fretboard and showed him how the truss rod works. Anyway, he asked to do some clamping. I agreed. We got it all clamped up and... I put him to bed.
Twenty minutes later... :hmm: Did that board shift?
Sure enough, it did. But I was able to unclamp and get it realigned. :)
So be warned. Always double check, and always let your kids take part.

And a Progress shot on the chambered spalted beech.
http://www.sheridanbasses.com/images/1213spaltedbeech.jpg
Luke Sheridan 12-29-2007, 05:44 PM So this bass has finally been completed, save for one knob. I made a few changes with this build. Its chambered, the heel has been redesigned a bit and I've finally gotten the look I was after in the scarf joint. The Fat Stacks with a Coil Tap are tasty, i must say. One of these days I'll get to that last knob.

Al Heeley 12-29-2007, 06:15 PM Beautiful. What I really like is the black veneer layer as an accent line and the gorgeous neck wwod on the Bubinga. Ash body is really handsome, very nice work but I have developed an irrational aversion to wooden knobs. I can't explain it but I hate them as much as wooden pickup covers. Reminds me when my parents bought an 'antique-look' cabinet to hide the television in. They need to face up to technology and embrace it, not hide it or pretend it does not exist. Enough gorgeous wood in the neck and body to satisfy my lust. Great work.
