ASH SUCKS! sanding ash in the contours is the biggest PITA (so is flatsawn wenge, for that matter). Main reason why I like working with closed pore/grain wood. Maple and Alder baby!

scottyd 06-09-2007, 08:15 PM All this nice wood, (sigh) here’s some spalted crotch walnut that I cut earlier this year (I guess that would make this amateur wood porn). These photos don't do the wood any justice. It’s got a little bit of curl here and there, its just hard to see while the woods rough. It still lacks a bit of drying until I can use it. I hope I can hold out that long.:( Until then it sleeps stickered and put away. :bawl:

wilser 06-23-2007, 08:10 PM any shop where one is able to walk barefoot is obviously not getting enough work done! (my shop is the mess of all messes, I'm just too lazy to clean up only to turn on the safe-t-planer and see the same mess all over again). I mean, look at that floor, is that carpeting for the love of all that is good!?!?!?
JSPguitars 06-23-2007, 09:11 PM Well, if it was my garage I'm sure it would be much messy-er....but it's my folks and I'm not that productive at the moment. It's really easy to sweep up, and I do the major woodchuckin in the woodchips on the side yard otherwise my toads would be super pissed. And for the love of Jesus, no, it's not carpet, just a foam mat to aid in the suspension a little.
Dios mio!

no, doesn't do it for me... The upper horn looks blemished and that bit on the upper body where the chamfer reveals the body wood just looks wrong. To me, the top isn't thick enough, it should go to the edge. And the "join" on the bottom just looks gash as well.

Except that I think most of the time all of the excess layers really, really badly detract from the topwood, which is why I think the "midbody reveal" as you called it is often WAY excessively thick or contrasting. It draws the eye away from the nice wood.

I have no problems with your comments....except the "Gashy Join" comment.....it's not a join, but a Sapwood streak. There was an identical one on the other side, but was removed when the contour was shaped.
Krass comments are expected on everything here, but when posed through lack of information, it displays an idiocy well represented on this forum.
BTW the odd area you refer to on the upper cutaway is a patch of small burls. It was my choice to include that, and the customer has had no complaint, so I thought I would let you in on that also.;)

You used the "F" word:eek: LMAO, I never take stuff like that to heart, just brush it off as another uninformed soul lacking knowledge beyond just wood, I am sure...LMAO:ninja: :bassist:
manicbassman 07-01-2007, 02:34 AM the workmanship is fine, maybe even superb, but the business of using a piece of wood with what I would consider a defect is not...
I would never have let you continue building my bass if you'd shown that wood to me. I'd have told you to get a better piece and to have used that wood on a smaller body
bassman74 07-01-2007, 10:32 AM hello Manicbassman,
the picture simply don't do justice to the walnut.
i have to agree that i was worried when i first saw the pictures but when i received the bass... It was simply stunning... everyone who have seen the bass agree that the walnut grain is stunning and everyone likes the burl on the upper horn. it is sapwood and definetely not a glue joint....
we simply can't agree with everyone's taste!!!
there are things that i will change in the future like the forearm contour...
thanks for your comments!!! It will help me improve my design....
Francois
cricketfever32 07-01-2007, 12:04 PM being late to this thread...is so weird...loving the wood though
wilser 07-01-2007, 12:33 PM [QUOTE=wilser;4362636]personally, I like that spalted beech very much.

I guess walnut has a thing for the big V!
Hey Todd, I am definitely not an expert on the subject, but don't vaginas go in front? :D

Ok. So it's not mine. but wood like this has to be put out there.
Spalted burl maple with some  color.
Bid and lost.
edit: btw - this is the wood porn thread, not the porn porn thread.
JSPguitars 11-06-2007, 12:15 PM yay, this thread's resurrected! I began to cut fingerboards from a very strange brazilian rosewood billet. Must have been a very small tree or a limb, to have so much sapwood? Anyway, my dad has been calling it the 'gecko wood'...
martin.gauthier 12-05-2007, 08:16 PM But still worth it to post.
Ebay.
Right now, selling for 798. Not kidding.
