Hello,

I have a 4 string Warwick Corvette Standard with passive MEC PU.

I like how it sounds when I run it through my Ampeg B100R Rocket combo but I hate how it sounds when I record direct into my Presonus Firebox preamps even I mess around with the Ampeg SVX plugin.

I was thinking of swapping out the pickups for a set of Nordstrand NJ4SV's. Will the change of pickups change the sound dramatically or will it be minor due to the wood (bubinga) of the bass? Or should I look into using a direct box? I tried the Sansamp and thought it sounded too sterile. I'm looking for a nice warm lowend old-school sound.

Thank you for your help!

I have the same bass and I've done a good bit of direct recording with it. I always used the Sansamp Bass Driver DI, and always liked my tone.

Definitely change the pickups to Nordstrands. A direct box won't help much but a SansAmp BDDI probably will.

Hi. Not familiar with Warwick basses except for the couple a picked up in the music store. Not sure what all the fuss is about but whatever... I don't think I would be in a big yank to swap out the pickups in something that I liked the sound of live because I couldn't get a good recorded sound right away.

The sansamp is a good idea and the concept there is most likely "warming things up" Have you tried miking a bass amp along with the direct signal? This my preferred method of recording bass guitar.
