what's your US$ price range for 'affordable'? a high quality well figured ready to use BM Redwood set could easily run you over $75US - and I've seen sets go for much higher than this.

if you're talking under $50US for a highly figured BM set that's ready to use there's always eBay ... but buyer beware - an inexpensive price isn't always a great deal

IME Walnut is even crazier in price than Redwood. my best advice with Walnut would be to learn how to bookmatch a set yourself and then visit your local lumber store and pick thru the supply of 4/4 - 8/4 stock of a proper width until you find a nice figured piece ... then buy it and BM it yourself. it's definitely a rewarding experience when it all works out

here's my most recent Walnut lumber year special right after I bookmatched a top and back

which became this once it was cleaned up

I have enough left in that board for two more backs of similar figuring. not too bad for a $35US Walnut board, eh?

all the best,

R

Lmi has them but not in the thickness' you asked for. I've used one of theirs before, not bad.

I had great luck with a piece I bought from eBay. I had Larry Davis resaw it for me. All in all, I think I wound up paying about $75 with shipping for 4 beautiful curly/flamed redwood tops with some mineral staining and white rot.

So, all that said, hit up the Bay.

thank you guys,

75$ is the highest i'd like to pay.

As you said Rodent, i should learn to bookmatched my top myself.

I'll check on ebay and see what's available.

Thank for all the advice

Be especially careful on ebay to make sure you are buying dry material. A lot of the redwood there is green or partially air dried.

I have gotten redwood from both Larry and EBay. Haven't used the EBay wood yet but it was thinner than advertised at about 7/8" and has a bit of twist. EBay sucks in that way - you never know what kind of warp/twist/kink/cup you are going to see when you get the wood.

I only buy from people that not only have good feedback on ebay, but also on various woodworking forums. I know a lot of the guys at projectguitar.com buy from ebay, so you may want to ask around there.

i really appreciate your advice,

it's true that there is a lot of green or partially dry wood....

Hey Bassman,
Have you checked out " oregonwildwood.com "? Last time I checked, they had quite a few nice looking Redwood sets. Some with really deep flame. The price range used to run about $55 US for bookmatched sets.

and don't forget to drop Larry Davis a note at Gallery Hardwoods. I have a stunningly killer birdseye Redwood top from Larry that I picked up late last year. I've been waiting for the 'right' project to utilize it on ... and I now think I know the bass it'll be used on :hyper:

Larry can easily slice you the specific thickness you want in a bookmatch

all the best,

I have also picked up several excellent Redwood tops from Larry.
He is out of his shop at the moment but I think he should be back at the end of the week. One of the tops on the bass below.
Cheers
Alan

Curly redwood, or are you willing to go with psychotic burl?
Would a 1/4" bookmatched set meet your needs? If so, send me an email.

Hey, I dunno if this will be at all helpful or not, but when I was scouting for top woods of any species, I stumbled across a great ebay seller (I should rephrase, I know nothing of his selling qualities, but his inventory was great!), who stocks pretty much only curly redwood. I don't think its prebookmatched, but you could ask him, and i don't know if it will work out to be your price range, but when I read the previous posts here and saw 'curly' 'redwood' and 'ebay', I thought I might as well show. Okay, enough chit chat, here's the site: http://stores.ebay.com/Redwood-Bears-and-More

I bought a beautiful redwood top from them before. It ended up developing stress fractures. They took it back and paid for shipping! I ended up ordering another awesome redwood top from them with no problems at all. The bass came out beautiful. They were great to work with.

A lot of that stuff is only a couple months off the sawmill and watch out for shipping prices on EBay.
