So I stopped down at my local GC the other day with my wife, to see if they had a replacement power cord for my amp (damn dog). As I was walking in, I went by the bass area which is right by the door, but didn't stop cause it was filled up with your typical emo-punk looking kids, with some pink-haired girl plunking on a bass. I thought that's cool; I'll just hit it before I leave.

Anyways, they didn't have any spare cables for sale (surprise, surprise), but the younger kids were just walking out as I went back to the bass area again. There was a pretty cool looking Squier Vintage Jazz sitting there that I thought might be fun to play for kicks, so I reached out for it. The girl must have played it earlier, because she commented to me as she left, "play another one, I think that one's out of tune."

No, that's not the funny part; I can understand a newer player not knowing how to properly tune yet - or having just a horridly messed up squier at GC, for that matter. Let me just say that it was, in fact, very well in tune after I checked it with harmonics.

When I picked up the bass, I actually took a better look at it, as I just caught a glance of it when I first saw it. And I about busted out laughing.

It was then that I turned to my wife and said, "Well, no wonder the pink-haired chick couldn't play it in tune. Apparently she didn't notice that it doesn't have any frets."

I hate emo/punk kids who don't know what they're doing, my favorite quote is this one:

Emo: "I can almost play the entire new Green Day album! I bet you can't do that"
Me: Can you play any Hendrix?"
Emo: "Who's that"
Me: "Stop talking and don't ever pick up a guitar again until you learn who Jimi Hendrix is."

Yeah I laughed pretty hard at the time... I think the girl behind the counter was looking at me funny. To be totally honest, I didn't mind the emo kids; they weren't being annoying or stupid or anything, just a bit clueless. And dressed kind of funny, of course, but you get the idea. I actually felt kind of sorry for them - reminded me a bit of when I was a beginner, and had a hard time finding good teachers or local influences. I'm sure we all had a "huh?" moment at some point when we first saw a retless bass.

Incidentally, I was pleasantly surprised by the Squier. I was reminded that I'm not a big fan of flats in general, but other than that, I thought it played real nice for as cheap as it was.

i remember, when i went with my dad to GC to get him a guitar, there was this kid, couldn't have been older than 12-13, who had a bit of a crowd around him (read: 3-4 people) who were all amazed by his self-proclaimed "shredding" (read: creating the noise guitar hero makes when you duff up). that was the shortest time it's ever taken me to buy a guitar.

i hear you. i work at a guitar center and conversation with those very same kids is what gets my day over a little bit quicker.

Now, that just made my morning!

well...that wasn't overly funny. perhaps because i knew before the end of the story it was a fretless. besides doesn't that particular model have fret markers.

so she just couldn't play? i think i missed the point. damn lack of sleep.

Hah, when I went in to buy my first bass (with my mohawk and combat boots, of course) the guy at the counter was kinda surprised when I semi-knew what I was talking about. I'm not trying to brag, but for someone who had no lessons and was completly self taught (I didn't even have a book, I just started printing out tabs on my first day) I'm doing pretty well.

Here's a bit of a funny story: once I was at a music store (Brook Mays, I think) I picked up a bass and started playing something easy, although I don't remember what it was. I was still kinda sucky at this point. Anyways, some little emo/skater loser comes up and says "Dude, that is like soooooooo totally radical! Green Day, now they have like the best bass player ever!" I just looked at him and said "If that's the best bass playing you've ever heard, then go get some new music before I kick your knees out."

Gosh I'm mean.:D

as someone who would probably be labelled as a "punk/emo" kid (even though i think of myself as otherwise)... i'm glad that PrecisionBass made the distinction of "don't know what they're doing"...

[b] jimi hendrix was an amazing guitarist (though my GF doesn't like him very much)
[c] i've been playing bass for seven years and while i do not consider myself a master by any standard... neither am i a novice.

anyways...

i DID find the story funny.

i'm too self conscious to go into a GC or the local woodwind&brasswind (unfortunately now owned by GC) and just crank up and play...
and i DEFINETLY know the difference between a fretless and fretted... and what not...
so..

I do say though, Whenever I walk into a GC or long and mcqaudes for that matter, I tend to get some bad looks from staff, customers whatever.

One day, I walked in and there was a bunch of these preppy kids standing around some other kid playing Squire strat. They all thought he was complete agg. I picked up a Ric and started tuning it (it was in some crazy non-existant tuning) and they were whispering

" oh, I bet he can only play like some greenday or emo crap like that'
"yah, bet he doesn't even know how to play the damn thing"

So, I start playing a bit, i get some sarcastic 'oohs' and 'aahs' , kinda pissed me off. So i started playing Metallicas 'anesthesia- pulling teeth' complete with muff and wah. Needless to say, shut them up nicely.

Pulling teeth and YYZ what I rely on for people to stop making conclusions:D . I'm still learning pulling teeth though but am learning the part when the drums kick in.

i'm pretty much at that part too. after durms kick in i can't really play it so i just do some tapping or whatever i can think of to shut em up. works nnicely too :bassist:
