VIEW FULL LIVE VERSION : Would you proudly play a Tribby?
drumbook 06-15-2007, 10:04 PM I know the issue of Tribby vs MIA G&L has come up many times. I bought a Indonesian JB-2 and just love the dang thing, BUT it has that big "Made in Indonesia" stamped on the back of the headstock. YUK!! Lately asking myself should I loose this "entry level" G&L and get the identical MIA instead. Also thought of removing the Indonesia stamp and live with the fact that it is a nice axe regardless of origin. Hmmm  Any opinions welcome.
gillento 06-15-2007, 11:07 PM Yes! No one sees the backside if you choose not to show!
Infernal Affair 06-16-2007, 12:07 AM I wouldn't mind playing a Tribby at all, and I'd worry less about damaging it on stage.
My Tribute L-2500 has the best tone of any of my G&Ls (ASAT, SB-1, SB-2, L-2000, L-5000, L-2500). Nobody in the audience (except another player) will know or even care what kind of Bass you are playing, much less where it was made. The players will most likely be jealous because your axe sounds better than theirs, and cost 50%-80% less.:D
Keep the tribute and save up for a MIA. That way you'll have both.. bassist:
drumbook 06-16-2007, 08:59 AM What a wuss I am!! :crying:
I just have this MIA syndrome thing going in my head and it's ridiculous...... What I need to do is save up for a choice SB-2 and get a case for this JB-2 (the gig bag that came with it is really nice though).
I already do. I have a tribby 2.5 and a USA 1505. The only reason I have the 1505 in the USA version is that it doesn't come in a tribute version....
Cheers rOdy

I do proudly play a Tribby! It rocks! I'm always getting compliments on how good it looks and how it sounds.
It looks orange in pics, but it's really amber

proud of it..
who cares where it's made?? if it plays fantastic (they do), sound fantastic (they do) and look phenomenal (bonus, but they do), that's all that matters.
In Canada, the Tribute JB-2 is hard to come by,, mines on order (my second trib, already have a l2k).

What's the difference between flatsawn and quartersawn? How can you tell that mine is quartersawn?

Not bad. This neck is sick, flamed and birdseye maple.

I think it's a nice bit of unintentional flaming. It was a pleasant surprise to open the case containing my Korean made Tribby and find that there was flaming in the neck!
roger winkler 06-16-2007, 07:27 PM I play a Tribby L-2000 and it kicks @ss over my MIA Fender P-Bass Special. If I had the cash at the time I'm not so sure that I would have bought a MIA model. Here's a pic, it's the same one I'm playing in my avatar pic. :D

This is quartersawn..

See how the growth rings end up front to back on the neck? Theoretically, this leads to it being stiffer in that direction.
Play what you like. If it sounds good and feels good, that's the most important thing. Labels are just ink, they don't affect the tone at all. :) :)
mainsail 06-16-2007, 11:12 PM Amen to that.

Trevorus 06-16-2007, 11:37 PM I played mine for a LONG while... I loved it. It's just not getting used right now unfortunately... So it's going to some lucky TB'er
LeftyJack 06-17-2007, 12:22 AM I'd love to have more choices in lefty Tributes. I get one in a minute if they did.

So would a friend of mine! We're having the hardest time finding a decent lefty 5-string for him.
curly sue 06-17-2007, 06:42 AM I'm not only proud, i felt in love somehow :)
My girlfriend about my tribby l2500:
"nice butt. and it keeps its figure. i hate it"
and its a g&l in the end.
lpdeluxe 06-18-2007, 07:14 AM A Tribute L2K was my main bass for over a year, until I got my current MIM '50s P Fender. The band fell in love with the P, so I traded the Tribute for a fretless J....
The Tribute was gorgeous natural ash, satin maple fb, excellent neck, glassy finish. The ONLY time anyone remarked on it was when some redneck at a dance hall asked if it was a Peavey:eek: .
If I could have gotten the P sound out of it, I'd still have it.

Does it play with an Indonesian accent? Remove the sticker or cover it with a G&L logo sticker.
Think about it -- when you see a bass player who's kicking ass, nobody cares what they're playing; those that suck, well -- doesn't matter where the bass is made, it still sucks.
just a thought...

+1 I can Suck on the finest of gear. Anyone can sound bad on a Rogue though a blown Harke, I can make a Sadowsky wish it was never born!

Wow, is that just a luck of the draw or can you order a flamed neck? It isn't on their website neck options list. The one she has is highly figured - I wonder if they reserve the nicer flamed necks for the gun oil tint?

I'll have to ask Mark, but I believe it was just luck of the draw bought off the rack at a dealer.
I don't think flamed necks are an option but since they are maple it can happen.

It sounds like the differences between Tribute and MIA are pretty minor, maybe a bit of improvement in tone, construction, electronics, and finishes. The big one seems to be price...;) As far as playing live, as others have said no one will know, most could care less, and would you want to take a guess at the ratio of Fenders played live that are made outside the US vs. MIA? Just using Fender as an example as most the Ibanez's etc. I see at my local shops are made in China.
Of course, there are reasons to buy MIA G&Ls. For me it was a combination of factors including supporting traditional craftsmanship and reacting against outsourcing, whether it be by US companies, Japanese, German, whatever. Having said that I can appreciate that G&L gives customers a choice.

tornadobass 06-18-2007, 02:29 PM I've been playing an '81 L1K for the past 5 or so years and just picked up a used Tribute L-2500. These two basses are hard to compare, but at Saturday's gig on an outdoor bandshell at a golf course, I used the L1K for the first two sets and then switched to the L-2500. I thought the Tribby had more clarity and a more even frequency response (neck pickup, parallel, preamp).
The first few minutes of trying the L-2500 bass at home left me thinking I was nuts for moving away from the L1K, but as soon as I plugged in at the gig, I knew it was a good choice and should serve me well. Quite a different sound and feel...more modern sounding and a chunkier neck on the L-2500.

But G&L overall (tribs included) are better then fenders.:hiding: :ninja:

And my '74 Jazz has only seen one gig in the last 5 or 6 years, since I got the L1K that put it to shame.
