i recently received an extra pair of NOS jazz type MFD pickups in a trade ,
and was wondering what to do with them ... ??

my first impulse is to mount them into my MIA Fender Jazz Bass .
i love the sound of my 1984 SB-2 , but i also love the feel of my Jazz bass ...

so what do you think ?
should i do it ?
would this be considered an abomination ?
against the laws of nature ?

I wouldn't put hack up a MIA Jazz, but if you can find a MIM you like, maybe cut that up. Or just get a different body and reuse your MIA parts.

Sounds kinda like a tractor bass. How do the MFDs compare to Darkstars?

Do you mean the soapbar-style single-coil MFDs?

I defintely wouldn't route your MIA (though its up to you of course!). You could get a decent warmoth or some other Jazz body and use the neck from your MIA- then you keep the comfort without doing anything you can't undo to the MIA, which will probably hold its value forever as is (the one thing I miss about owning Fender basses!).

Nobody's ever worried about resale when they get really into the idea of doing a modification- but I can tell you from many experiences that it might be a good idea to think twice now while you still can. Especially when it's so easy to find quality components (like bodies, necks) compatible with Fender Jazzes for decently cheap prices...I often get the modification bug, and there's been some instances where I regretted it down the road!

That said, I'm sure an MIA Fender Jazz would kick some a@@ with those MFDs...

He could buy a cheaper non-Fender body to route now, as there are oodles of companies that make decent Fender compatible parts for little money (or he could even buy a MIM body for cheaper than a US Fender)- or have to buy another genuine US Fender body again for alot more down the road...

It's not an MIA Jazz, but for $169 you wouldn't have to worry about ruining it if you made a mistake.

it will be a project bass , so i'm not gonna rush into it ...

I would go with the cheaper non original MIA fender body. Then you won't have to worry about destroying an original and it's resale value. It will be interesting to see what you do with those things.
