This is a search-engine-friendly text mirror of the TalkBass Forums Calvin Marks 06-18-2007, 12:33 PM I would personally really love to hear from Jeff Bradetich; he's an incredible musician and teacher. jasonheath 06-18-2007, 02:46 PM This is a great idea, Calvin! I used to study with Jeff, and I am planning on sitting down with him for an interview when he has some time. The major difficulty with these interviews is simply finding time when both of us are free, but Jeff is definitely on my list. Calvin Marks 06-20-2007, 02:20 PM Don't you think his technique packet is just amazing? It works every aspect of your playing and it's kinda fun :) jasonheath 06-20-2007, 02:23 PM It really is excellent. I also have the 'advanced' packet, and I'm going to be uploading that to the blog site so that people can download it. I studied with Jeff when I was in high school, and I really got a lot out of working with him. I actually went to Northwestern to study with him, only he switched jobs and went to North Texas that same year. I decided to stick around Chicago, but I really got a lot out of working with him before that. Eli_Upright12 06-20-2007, 08:33 PM Maybe Catalin Rotaru, I think that would be a really cool interview jasonheath 06-21-2007, 10:50 AM Featuring Catalin would certainly be a good idea! I put out a track of Catalin playing the Brahms Sonata first movement on episode 19 (http://jasonheath.blogspot.com/2007/05/contrabass-conversations-episode-19.html) of the podcast, but having him as a guest would be great. He and I both used to teach at University of Wisconsin schools, and it would be interesting to hear his perspectives. Eli_Upright12 06-22-2007, 01:37 PM Yeah I'm A Madison guy and I saw him play live at Henry Baumes workshop and was blown away. jasonheath 06-23-2007, 12:14 PM He's a very talented soloist and really good at motivating students. I have a former student studying with him right now, and he's really getting whipped into shape, which is exactly what he needed. I heard a recent recording of my old student, and he'd really gotten better, both technically and musically. Jeff Moote 07-08-2007, 11:20 PM A couple more suggestions for guests, I'd love to hear from both Joel Quarrington and Jeffrey Beecher. I think they both would have a lot to say with Joel a seasoned player and a real pioneer for fifths tuning, and Jeffrey having so much success at a young age. I'm sure they're both busy like many of your guests, but it'd be great to hear them on the podcast. jasonheath 07-09-2007, 01:08 AM Great idea, Jeff! I have been in touch with Joel in the past couple of months, and I'll put out a feeler to him. I actually know Jeff Beecher from the Scheswig-Holstein festival from about 10 years back, and I'll do the same for him. I appreciate the ideas, and let me know if you've got any more! damonsmith 07-09-2007, 02:26 PM I really like hearing from all these working classical bassists. They are all such great musicians and you never really hear much about them otherwise. A jazz or improv bassist with half the technique and trainning can become much better known worldwide, so it is good to hear about these great musicians. jasonheath 07-10-2007, 04:30 PM Thanks for that feedback, Damon! I really enjoy interviewing the classical players (since that's what I do), but I'm also looking forward to chatting with some more jazz musicians and bas players who specialize in other styles. Interviewing Ranaan this past episode was really cool for me because he brings so many diverse influences to the table--his Curtis training, jazz playing, orchestral experience, bluegrass playing, and composition. Jeff Moote 07-11-2007, 03:12 AM Great idea, Jeff! I have been in touch with Joel in the past couple of months, and I'll put out a feeler to him. I actually know Jeff Beecher from the Scheswig-Holstein festival from about 10 years back, and I'll do the same for him. I appreciate the ideas, and let me know if you've got any more!I'm glad you're on top of things. Joel and Jeff are both really nice people who I'm sure have lots to share. I'm really enjoying the podcast... I'm now subscribing, and slowly working through the back episodes (not so much in order, but I'll get to them all eventually). jasonheath 07-12-2007, 02:39 AM It's great to hear that you're enjoying the show, Jeff. Let me know if you have any more ideas for guests or musical selections. Reuben 07-28-2007, 05:58 PM How about an interview with Michael Cameron? Seems like he'd be right up your alley, being a "classical" guy and being in Illinois. http://www.music.uiuc.edu/facultyBio.php?id=141 He's a wonderful player and he gets very little attention. Rob Sleeper 08-12-2007, 09:27 PM I really like your podcast Jason. It is very insightful and informative. This just came to me. Jason, I think that Volkan Orhan would be a great guest. He studied with Gary Karr and came to the US from Turkey in the 90's. Iowa City is only a couple hrs away from Chicago too I think. jasonheath 08-19-2007, 04:04 PM Great idea with Volkan! I was in touch a few months ago about featuring his music on a show (look for it soon!), and I think that doing an interview would be a great idea. He's an interesting player and person, and it would likely be a very good episode. Thanks! Rob Sleeper 08-19-2007, 09:22 PM Yes I am seriously thinking about learning German bow too. Don't tell Michael though, he thinks that I'll be joining the dark side! lol damonsmith 08-20-2007, 04:31 PM How about an interview with Michael Cameron? Seems like he'd be right up your alley, being a "classical" guy and being in Illinois. http://www.music.uiuc.edu/facultyBio.php?id=141 He's a wonderful player and he gets very little attention. +1. He is great player. He sounds amazing on those Guillermo Greggorio cds and plays the Sh++ out of PSY by Berio on the Complete Sequenzas and solo works box. And Uh, I am going to be in Chicago in early October.... SUNBA 08-21-2007, 06:16 AM Hello jason Nice job on your CB CONV. I would love to hear from the man who has won every single audition he took ,including the latest montreal principal,he MUST be doing something "RIGHT" Also Joe Guestafeste of CSO,Eugene Levinson of NYP,and last but not the least HALL ROBINSON of PHILADELPHIA . jasonheath 08-21-2007, 10:13 AM Great ideas with the guests! Ali is a great idea. I'll definitely be looking into that. Stay tuned for news about Joe G, Hal, and Eugene. Michael Cameron would also make a great interview. He actually lives in Chicago (and commutes to Champaign to teach--yikes!). I've got a spreadsheet with these guests (contacted Y/N replied Y/N confirmed Y/N etc.) and I add to it whenever you all give me an idea, so I really do appreciate it. It's hard to think of who would make a good guest when you're in the middle of it, and I really value the input! Pete G 09-15-2007, 06:22 AM He's been around so long people tend to take him for granted, but Joe was *the* hot young bass player when he was named CSO principal by *Fritz Reiner* -- and he's seen and done everything over a very great career since then. I don't know about anyone else, but one thing I seriously undervalued when I was a young guy was the value of the experiences and memories that could only be tapped by talking to people a generation or two ahead of me. And when people like that leave us, so do their memories. I would love to hear Joe's take on the world he entered when Reiner appointed him; the great conductors he's played for; how orchestra playing changed over the decades (for bassists and for orchestras in general); and what he's seen in the development of bass playing. Great work, and keep it up! Cosmos 02-05-2008, 11:46 AM I'd love to hear from Joe Gusastafeste, too. Also, I'd love to hear from: Chris Hanulik in L.A., Scott Pingel in San Francisco, Tim Cobb at the Met, Al Laszlo at Juilliard, Orin O'Brien at the NYP, and Peter Lloyd at Northwestern. christ andronis 02-05-2008, 12:04 PM Jason...enjoy your podcasts and your site....how about an interview with Larry Gray (http://www.larrygraymusic.com/)? He lives in Chicago and is an enormously talented player and writer in addition to being an all around good guy. Dr Rod 02-05-2008, 05:59 PM Hey Jason ! here are some ideas: -Jack Budrow, amazing all around musician -Stephen Molina, Detroit SO, amazing coach -Matt Zory, Cincinnati SO, amazing player, lots of finals -Leigh Mesch, Met Orchestra, great player/coach/auditioner -Rick Vizachero, Cincinnati SO, amazing soloist, Mr Clean Co. 02-06-2008, 07:01 PM MARK DRESSER!!! jasonheath 02-11-2008, 10:51 AM Thanks for the recommendations, everybody. I've got a database of people that I'm planning on contacting or in the process of lining up interviews with, and these recommendations are extremely valuable to me for planning new shows. Much appreciated, and feel free to hare any other ideas. I've been in touch with Budrow and a few of the others mentioned by Rodrigo, but we're still in the process of lining them up. Sir-NOSE-alot 02-19-2008, 10:32 PM How about somebody like Reid Hudson or Sue Lipkins? Jake 02-19-2008, 11:21 PM I think the Jeff Bradetich/Max Dimoff interview sounds like a great idea. Also, Joe Kaufman of the Seattle Symphony. Derrick Hodge would be a great guy to talk to about bass playing in general, Jazz, and doubling on bass guitar. jgbass 02-21-2008, 09:55 PM Hi Jason, Have you ever thought of interviewing Bert Turetzsky? He's a wonderful teacher, retired from UC San Diego, actively gigging and recording. He's a really interesting person to talk with. jasonheath 02-25-2008, 09:19 AM Great idea for a Bert interview. I'd been thinking about contacting him at some point. We've met in the past but this way way before I started the blog/podcast. I added him to my database of potential guests and will get in touch with him as well. Thanks for the idea! Sir-NOSE-alot 03-13-2008, 08:11 PM Hey Jayson how about doing a show about the man behind the mike? could you tell us about how you went from freelance bassist to blashpemous badass bodacious :bassist: blogger? fan4life LUV U J POOPSMITH 03-15-2008, 09:32 PM Yo Jay, Joe Hearne would be a good one. -:bassist: jasonheath 03-17-2008, 07:02 AM Maybe Ill do an autobiographical one for an anniversary episode or episode 100 or something. I'm throwing out a few autobiographical stories on the podcast under the following link: http://contrabassconversations.com/guests/special-features/story-time/ (http://contrabassconversations.com/guests/special-features/story-time/) Thanks for checking out the show! Illfavor 05-29-2008, 11:02 PM This is mostly just a show idea, but where are the "Greatest hits"!!? I imagine it would be a lot of dubbing work, but there are so many "must know" tidbits of information on so many different podcasts that could occasionally be synthesized into a mega-all-awesome podcast. They could be themed and such like that. It just seems like a good idea because there is always at least one ridiculously good piece of information on each podcast! I'm sure it would be greatly appreciated! hdiddy 12-03-2008, 01:52 PM FWIW: Your podcasts are nice but I'd like to see more jazz players. The Kristin Korb interview was very nice. Speaking of which, I'm willing to bet you can hit up her teacher, John Clayton, for an interview. Such a gracious guy and he's got tremendous arco chops too. Seoul 01-06-2009, 05:54 AM How about Richard Davis? Cheers... BrianMcAnally 01-06-2009, 03:00 PM Get Hal Robinson and Edgar Meyer! They are two of my favorite players ever. I recently saw him perform with the Punch Brothers (an amazing band), and absolutely loved his playing. An all-too-brief post-concert conversation convinced me that he might be a very interesting guest. oh, by the way, I'm in love with CBC! |
