When I used to have aol,I would read they're bass board(never posted)and they took this topic down some pretty humorous trails.

Since i'm in the market for a new pickup,I thought I'd check out your wheels

Oh,I had to quit aol, they had no local phone no.and all my time there was on long distance. But this is a much better board, not just limited to americans, also much friendlier.Theres not the fighting over semantics etc.

Usually in my 4dr Accord, but I do have an Astro van for when I need more than a single 15. I used to have a Pinto wagon and I just left my 2-15 in the back between gigs and plugged it into the radio. http://talkbass.com/ubb/eek.gif

Last year, I "broke" down & bought a Honda SUV...
Prior to that-I owned an '84 BMW 318i. Here's how "that" worked: Bass in the trunk; amp in the back seat; Eden 4x10XLT barely in the front seat!(did I say BARELY...so that I couldn't see out of the passenger side window?).
...Oh, yeah-girlfriend sitting directly BEHIND me in the back seat...bitching the whole way to & fro.
Ed...man, I don't see how you guys deal with the subway, cabs,...awesome, man!

I have a 1990 CHEVY 4x4 pickup (full size with a short bed). The 4x4 helps because it can get nasty here in K.C. I would like to get a Suburban but they are expensive and plus (knock on wood) my pickup has never given my any grief, plus it's paid for!

I use the Donald van here. That would be my husband's ( Don) Windstar van. Bryan I live North of KC. Know what you mean. So I guess I have roadie plus transport all in one. Plus he is a City bus driver, so if I ever make it big (ha!) then I already have the bus driver too. http://talkbass.com/ubb/smile.gif---Staci.

'99 Toyota RAV4. But it's actually smaller inside than my old Tercel wagon so the rack, cab, and suitcase (cords, stand, etc.) go in the back but the basses now are on the back seat.

Much more useful is my folding 2-wheel hand truck. This thing really changed my gig life for the better. All one trip, no pain. Look into one...

JimK, after looking at your profile I was wondering, where do you keep all those basses and stuff? I had 10 when I got married, now I'm down to like 5 and my wife still complains that my stuff takes up too much room.

Like Player, I have a Chevy Astro B.A.V. (Big Ass Van), which can carry my gigantic Peavey combo, bass in HSC, backpacks filled with reams of illegally copied music (I have assembled a veritable monument to copyright infringement), my wife and her flute stuff, all the other misc gear, plus three highly annoyed conscript roadies (my kids). And, with a 4.3 Vortec engine, it'll still blow all them punier minivans off the road. Player, watch out if you have the Dutch doors in the back; yesterday I spent 70 bucks replacing the hydraulic lifters, and that's with me doing the labor (two months out of warranty too--doh!).

Bruce, as you know, America is a land of extremes, with bigger always being better, practicality be damned. Moderation is for pussies or commies (although I've paid my Tercel-driving dues, I'll have you know). It's stupid and wasteful, but that's the way it is, and so far, it's been working.

On a related note, how do you guys carry all the misc "stuff"--cables, tuners, stands, etc? What have you found works best--bags, boxes, trunks, etc? It's starting to get out of control for me. Just curious.

Lump, I used to use a small suitcase then my brother (a respitory therapist) got me this box it's like 12"x9"x9" that works great as long as it's just my bass stuff (cables, strings, stomp box, DI, etc.). My Astro is the extended BAV. Used to belong to Marge Schott (if you know who she is). Still cleaning out dog hair.
BTW, I know you had more 4 posts. What happened?

Well...it's called being SINGLE! I'll admit, I'm at the point now where something has to go before I buy anything "new"(I'm selling my Tobias 5 on eBay...take a look- search under [tobias bass]). My other instruments are "mine"; in other words, they would be difficult to move(except for the '78 MusicMan StingRay...& that's going nowhere!). Too, until the past year, I was always in TWO bands & I used to keep one rig warehoused at each site.

By coincidence I was watching a motoring programme (Top Gear) on TV last night and they mentioned that the top 4 makes of vehicle in the US are pickup trucks! They also mentioned that they are uncomfortable, unbalanced (all the weight at the front) and are like a transit van with no roof.

So can any of you from the US explain the appeal? And what do you do if it rains and your gear is in the back? I also imagine anything in the back being stolen when you are at the lights in most inner-city areas!

Don't do much transporting anymore but it used to be a Toyota Hiace van. Now I can just leave the stuff set up and plug in when I get there.

Bruce - I guess it's hard to get you head around the pick up thing when living in the UK. I'm in Australia where we have an interesting blend of US, Japanese and UK/Euro based vehicles along with the room on the roads like the US. No tight country lanes here so I suppose it's horses for courses.

*lump* --

I carry all of my misc little **** in a full-size soft-sided zippered suitcase that my neighbor left at the curb with the garbage. Price was right and I still haven't figured out what was wrong with it. Last year's style, perhaps.

Anyway, it's big enough for a wire music stand, and my charts go in the pocket inside the shallow side (that wouldn't help you much). And the soft-side means it stretched as I acquired.

Bruce,I need a small truck to haul my bicycles to the bike trail,a 32 mile(kilometers anyone ?)paved bike trail along the scenic american river that flows right through the middle of sacto california.when we want protection from theft,we just put a small camper shell on the back and no one can see in.I personally dont have a shell, but lots of folks do.theres still lots of trees here(I Know thats arguable)so some people use trucks to haul wood for their fireplaces. Then theres tool boxes and lumber racks that can be added which make it more useful.I carry my bass in a truck toolbox, theres still room for my guitar and my gigbag,a sports bag I carry my bass stand, music, and cords etc.in.I also keep the jumper cables in there http://talkbass.com/ubb/smile.gif.

Player,

As far as I can tell, Paul hates me.

Actually, the system ate my username right before the last server move, so I added the little a**hole thingies in order to log on (usedtobejim has a similar story). A few days ago, at my request, Paul kindly purged the username "lump" so I could go back to using it (yay). But, that meant going back to zero posts http://talkbass.com/ubb/frown.gif. I'm thinking of asking Paul to give me "Lifetime New Member" status. One thing's for certain--another server crash, and I'm demanding a refund http://talkbass.com/ubb/tongue.gif

Wow! Must be a shocking experience to have your username eaten, and then to be purged as well - horrible http://talkbass.com/ubb/frown.gif Maybe if we all gang up on Paul he'll add a zero to your postings - or maybe you can quickly submit the same post 50 times and catch up http://talkbass.com/ubb/smile.gif

Fiat Uno. 75 SX IE that is. Does 180 kmph. Tried it.

Two lumpy (sorry lump) 12"+5" cabs (60x42x50 cm) go upright in the back, bass case sits in the passenger seat. Rack on folded-down backseat. Leaves no room for passenger, sadly. But I'm single, so who would I have to carpool? All the other band members have their own car. My brother has an Opel Corsa, in which he puts his Sonor Force3000 drumkit. Cars are expensive in Holland, so. Petrol sells for about 1 dollar 25 a litre nowadays, and the government plans on putting portals at some highways around Amsterdam, "allowing" you to pay for traffic jam. Nice eh? My small Fiat costs me about a quarter of my income. Maintenance included, which I do myself. It's a 1990 compact car for God's sake!

Okay, once it's out of the vee-hickle (Texan for "truck"), how do you get your cab from point A to point B? I was using a dolly board up 'til last week, but I ran into an obstacle that forced me to go out and buy a hand truck. Last week I started a weekly job at a place that is paved with that miniature cobblestone stuff (I can't remember what it's really called), and it plays HELL on casters. KLACKATAKLACKATAKLACKATA. And that's moving about 1 foot/minute. Then I cross into a Spanish-tiled foyer - KLAK KLAK KLAK, then back outside again for more KLACKATAKLACKATAKLACKATA until I hit carpet in another building about 20 yards later. If looks could kill, I'd be a dead man. Plus, my 2 1/2" casters are now 2" casters.
I used the hand truck at a different gig this weekend, and it was easier to get up over curbs/doorways, but I can see that sucker tipping over one of these days. There's got to be a better way.

Nissan Pathfinder from home to the practice house. With the back seats down it's verrry roomy!! From the practice house to the job we have a trailer that everything fits in. Once upon a time I hauled my Hamer Blitz across town on my Yamaha XS-1100. Put it cross ways on the luggage rack behind the seat and bungee corded it down. Like a big wing!! Man it was spooky when I got some speed up!!

hi,

i've got an '82 honda civic station wagon. i can fit my 2x15 acoustic 406 cabinet, ampeg svt-4pro, bass, my guitarists combo, and two of her guitars with room to spare. plus i have room up front for one passenger.

i love my car. it's the perfect car for a poor musician. cheap, economical (30+mpg) and an incredible amount of room for a compact station wagon. it has almost as much room as my dad's old jeep cherokee.

JimM, I'm lucky enough to be in a band that has an equiment trailer. I keep my Genz Benz 6x10 cab & Ampeg SVTIIIpro in it. If need be, I could put it in my wife's 94 Dodge Shadow(not a P.O.S.).
My SWR Bassic Black combo, bass, and bag fit nicely in the trunk of my 99 Dodge Intrepid. I haven't tried the 6x10 cab in the Intrepid, yet!!! Could be interesting!!
Later on, folks!!!!!!

There's not a whole lot to my setup; my next upgrade is going to be a case--that's how cheap it is. =)

Generally, I wrap my bass carefully in an old sleeping bag and lay it in the back of my '85 Subaru hatchback (the back seat folds down) so that there is no weight on the neck. I use the various articles of clothing that I keep leaving in the car (sweaters, windbreakers, etc) to keep it from shifting around. Then I pray a lot while driving (carefully).

The amp is small enough to ride shotgun.

That's not quite as bad as the Schwinn story above, but it's pretty close, I should think. =)

I used to have a Nissan pickup with a cap, which was great, but I always ended up carting around guitarists or drummers who couldn't afford cars. I now have a Honda Civic that fits my amp, two 1x15 cabs, mic stand, equipment bag, and bass. I have to put my nice handcart in the passenger seat, but I can honestly tell the other guys that I can't take them to the gig. I don't mean to sound cruel, but I have a day gig and I can pack up and be gone before my amp cools off.

I transport my Carvin RC-210, a Peavey 115BXBW, my Peavey Cirrus Bass (damn that mother is long, it won't even fit in the back seat without angling it!) in my 4-door Saturn.
I usually have the amp and speaker cab in the back seat, my bass and small equipment bag in the trunk (the bass won't even fit in the trunk without angling it somewhat).

When I was in college and playing 3-4 nights week, my GF (now wife) had a VW convertible. To carry my Ampeg stack (svt head and two SVT 115 cabs) I would put down the top, load everything over the side of the car into the back seats, and then put the top back up. Kind of lame, but it worked.

My guitarist owns a '71 Volkswagen bus. One of the cool ones with the huge VW logo on the front. We painted it yellow. We call it the Twinkie van. It fits the drum kit, PA, 4x12 and head, 4x10 and head, my 1x15, and the keyboard, plus the band. It's a little tight, but it looks cool and it goes forever.

99 Ford Ranger XLT... with the extended cab, the back seats get the amp head, and the rack, plus three basses in gig bags... the bed carries the 410 and the 115, as well as any other basses i want to take in HSCs. It has a toneau cover (hard) so the weather isn't a problem. Any thing else that has to go go's in the passenger seat.

BTW, This truck is the most comfortable bar that I have ever driven, short of the latest buick/lincoln aircraft carrier... plenty of leg room, great interior, and it has 4x4... another person who needs to get around the nasty KC weather and the even worse KC drivers...

This thread is pretty old, but I figured I'd chime in. I actually have two Epi 212's, but I only regularly use one.

So I take the passenger seat out of my 1990 Miata and I've got all this room there......

THe Epifani 212 goes in as far toward the dash as possible, then right behind it goes my 4 space SKB (containing an Alembic F1X, SF2, and Stewart World 2.1) and my dual gig bag containing an Alembic Orion 5 and Fender Marcus Miller goes in the space behind the headrest. Perfec fit. I usually have to drop the top to get the Speaker Cab in, so use of my optional HardTop is not very optimal. But it floors folks to see the bass player pull up ina MIATA and once unloaded and plugged in get all that sound.

With the seat down, you can load up a lot of crap in that car. The RC210, 18 and a bass will fit in back... so I can take a passenger. Or I could put more stuff in the front too. I have a PA with a 4x8 cab to carry too now.

I haul my stuff in a late model Honda Odyssey van, not the original smaller one. It has a lot of power and room yet gets good mileage. How much gear depends on the kind of gig and with whom, sometimes just an upright bass and Contra amp, though other times a Yamaha PA and two cabs, 6space SKB and two cabs. However, during the busy season everything but my basses live in the band trailer- which is an absolute blessing.
