VIEW FULL LIVE VERSION : Do you think G&L could make me a lighter L2K?

Hey Fellas,
While I did enjoy the tone of my redburst L2k the weight was just something else. The guy I sold it to just unloaded it on ebay for the same reason. he actually weighed it... 11.5 pounds!
So my questions are do you think G&L would select a lighter piece of wood if I specified that from a dealer? I know the transparent(premier) colors are used on ash but the solid colors(standard) are used on alder. Or would and ASAT bass be lighter due to the telecaster shaped body? What are your thoughts?
Thanks,
B

Umm. I've never really been a fan of semi hollow basses. Thanks though.

My understanding is that you can ask for lighter weight but there's no guarantee you'll get it. I know of someone else who custom ordered an L-2000 (requesting light weight through the dealer) and it came in too heavy for him.

How light do you want it? The weights on those suckers vary a lot (between 9-11 lbs.), with some going into the extremes in either direction. I think your best bet would be to wait and see if a light one will turn up. As craig said, I'm not sure if there's a guarantee that the G&L factory can select a lighter piece of wood.

9 to 9.5 would be ideal. Unfortunetly I don't have a G&L dealer nearby so having a light one "turn up" that I can try isn't likely. Do ASAT's run lighter with the lack of the upper horn?

In my experience (3 ASAT's) the answer is no, not enough to be noticed. YMMV

Well, I'm the guy that has ended up with BrentSimons "heavy" L2K off the bay. I couldn't help it...it looked so damn good and after playing one at a local shop I really fell hard. But I am GD determined to LOVE playing this thing ! So any suggestions for back/neck strengthening excercise, wide straps, guy wires, et.al are appreciated. I will play it and play it and play it until I am a hunchback if necessary !!! :bassist:

i don't think that semihollow ASATs sound like yoru typical semihollow basses. i can't tell much of a difference from the solid body version...but maybe thats just me.

Brent,

I'm the guy that sold the L2K, and you are incorrect in stating the weight is why I sold it. As I told you, I sold it to raise cash for a rig reconfiguration. It's a beautiful, smooth playing bass. Yes, it's heavy, but that was never an issue for me.

dogbass - you're gonna love it. She's a beauty. I use a Moody Leather 4" strap for all of my basses. Expensive, but a great investment.

Most G&L's come in under 10 lbs and the majority are 9-9.5 lbs but there are exceptions. I got in one for a customer that weighs well over 10 lbs and was too heavy for him but it is also one of the best sounding ones I've ever heard. It is also the only one over 10 lbs we've gotten in since the store opened.

Hey Horney Toad ! Small world isn't it. The first bass I ever bought was a 'hog L1000 in 1980; weighs in at about 10.5; I'm not really concerned. Very excited anticipating its arrival though. I will update all after I've had a chance to strap it on and go through a 3 hour rehearsal...can't wait !!

My apologies. I thought the reason you were parting with that particular bass to raise money was the weight. Sorry.

hope the guy who bought it likes it, but if you don't let me know. I like 'em heavy.

Matt,

Aren't the new bass bodys coming in lighter due to the fact that they are now making thiner bodys.

It arrived at my door around noon according to UPS' website. I'll be out of work in a couple hours and be burning home to check it out.....I'll post later this evening.

Played this beauty for about 2 hours this evening. Yes, she is a heavy one ! With a 2-1/2" strap it was noticeable, but not intolerable. I can't believe all the different tones I'm able to get out of it. It really sounds and looks stunning and the #8 neck width and section is perfect for my hand. So we got all that going for us; I think we'll get along fine. Brent, I'm sure you'll find an L2K that it is not quite so heavy and you'll love it. Horney Toad...great transaction. Cheers

Glad to hear you like it dogbass! I'm not sure if the seller told you but the pickup selector was modded at the factory to do parallel/series and single coil operation. The single coil mode is the middle position. Glad the bass found a good home.

Eureka !! Thanks Brent ! Well this mystery is solved; I kinda figured after alot of futzin' around with that switch that it was either a phase shift or a single coil mode selector. Thanks for confirming that for me; :bassist:
