This autumn I am going to start at a school studying music full time, my major will be electrick bas in the afro tradition.
I am realy looking forward to it...
I play on a 4 string musicman bass now
Now I have the financial possibility to buy a knew instrument if I want, now that I have a fulltime jobb...
Cant make up my mind what i would have most use of doublebass, 5 string, 6 string.
Or mayby it will only mess up my mind to learn someting new right now.
Should I wait until I start and ask my teacher?

I would say save your money and wait until you've been in school awhile. School will expose you to lots of music and hopefully a chance to try out some instruments you're thinking of. I would also say if going to school having a little portable keyboard is invaluable for theory and ear training classes.

Hi!!
First of all CONGRATULATIONS on studying music full time. This is a TREMENDOUS opportunity for you.....VALUE it....don't take it for granted....
I would totally echo DocBops reply......
On one hand you might want to take some classes first and see how your tastes deveolp....BTW, you can make a TON of music with a MusicMan 4 string.....AND....remember that 90% of your sound is in your hands. Learn to develop that!!! I can't stress that enough.
My other suggestion to EVERYONE....is to play what you're the most passionate and excited about....be it 4, 5, 6, 10 string...whatever.....To be a high level musician is DIFFICULT....and takes a tremendous amount of HARD WORK...so you might as well be passionate and excited about what you're doing.
OK...end of lecture! Ha!;) ...
Let us know what you decide!!
Good luck.....

Thanks for the response, and great advice.
I wont take the studying for granted (tought its good to be reminded not to...).
I didnt get in last year when i aplied to several schools. So I took private lessons and this year i got in on both scools I aplied to. So hard work and privat lessons with a good bassteacher really pays of!! And that feels great of course.
I will wait and deside what to buy later on and of course keep you posted.
