i'm not sure if it's a grounding issue or not, but i get a lot of noise/hum, in all pickup settings (especially in humbucking setting) with my L1000. i play through a small (10 watt) guitar amp, as well as an analog 4-track recorder; and when i play through the 4-track the hum/noise goes away, completely, when i connect the 4-track to my stereo amp using RCA cables.

Try plugging the amp in through the same outlet as the stereo- sounds like your stereo is grounded properly, but not some other part of the chain...no matter how well your bass is grounded- if the amp or power outlet are not properly grounded you will get hum (because the grounding from the bass is ultimately supposed to be grounded through the wall outlet...)...

Note that the L-1000 is not humbucking except for the parallel mode, where the switch is toward the neck. You will get some hum in the single coil and bass boost positions, regardless of the rig it's plugged into.

yes...i forgot to mention that this hum/noise is in ADDITION to the "60 cyle hum" from the single coil and bass boost settings, and is even louder in the humbucking position. i was just reading about how someone had a similar grounding noise problem with a L2000. is this a common thing? and is there anything that can be done about it besides lucking out with properly grounded amplification/mixing?

I had that same problem with my 1k. I ended up sending back to G&L and they checked it over and come to find out, whoever had it before me that it would be a "good idea" to try and rewire the pickup. Well, in the process they ended up breaking the pickup. G&L ended up putting a brand new pickup in, but I don't remember what they charged. That has been my experience with the "60 cycle hum" it may not be what is wrong with yours, but if the problem continues you might give them a call.

Sometimes the ground wire under the bridge loses contact...if you touch the bridge or strings, or tuners, does it go away?
If so, you might try pulling the bridge, cleaning the wire, moving it from where it's been pressed into the wood for decades-just moving it a wire width is good.
