VIEW FULL LIVE VERSION : Cover versions that you like better than the original song?

Let's face it :hmm: , "original" doesn't always = "best".

No, this is not a "Fender vs. Sadowsky" thread :smug: .

I'm just curious as to which songs you like better, when performed by someone other than the composer/original band.

Reasons would be nice too ;) .

Here's three from me, to start the ball rolling (assuming that anyone replies and there is "a ball" to roll :hmm: ):

1. "Ziggy Stardust", by Bauhaus, as oppposed to the David Bowie version.

(Almost the same, very close as cover versions go, but Pete Murphy just tears it a up a bit more on the vocals and the guitars are wild).

2. "Desperado", by Johhny Cash, as opposed to The Eagles.

(That song sounds like it should have been written by Johnny Cash IMO and he gives a very heart-felt rendition of his acoustic version on his final album).

3. "All Along the Watchtower", by Jimi Hendrix, as opposed to Bob Dylan.

(OK, it's easy to knock Bob Dylan as a performer, but Hendrix just made this song his own, IMO.)

:) What do you guys think?

even though it gets waaaaay too much radio play, Disturbed's cover of Genisis's Land of Confusion is actually a really good cover. Throwdown's cover of Baby Got Back is also a moy bueno.

"Respect" - as covered by Aretha Franklin, original by Otis Redding

What can you say? It's her song now and forever.

War Pigs - as covered by Faith No More, original by Black Sabbath.

I'm not a huge sabbath fan, but I do like them. This is one of their best, but the FNM version just has more urgency and energy.

I'm sure I'll think of others.

You apparently like Tool, and you put Adriana Lima back, thus you are on my good side again.

Were you ever on my bad side, no.

I really like the cover album, Renegades, from Rage Against The Machine, most of the songs on there are better than the originals IMO.

"Easy" by Faith No More, as opposed to The Commodores (I believe?).

(Again, close to the original in many ways, but that long pause and the "Ooooooooohhh")!

A couple more:

Hallelujah - Jeff Buckley covering Leonard Cohen's original

Haunting and powerful, but its use in crappy TV shows finales and films cheapens Buckley's legacy a bit. Still a great song.

We Can Work It Out - Stevie Wonder covering the Beatles

Funkier, more soulful and just plain better IMO

I'll +1 the Renegades album, especially Maggie's Farm. I love both versions.

A few Joe Cocker songs could be included (A Little Help From My Friends, The Letter) and Nirvana's Unplugged has some great covers (The three Meatpuppet's songs, as well as the Bowie and Leadbelly songs) that I prefer to the originals.

Red Hot Chili Peppers versions of "Higher Ground" and "Love Rollercoaster" are better than the originals.

Same goes for Soft Cell's (and the Living End's) version of "Tainted Love", Alien Ant Farm's version of "Smooth Criminal" and the White Stripes version of "I Just Don't Know What to Do with Myself".

To a lesser extent, I also like Tom Morello's version of Another Brick in the Wall, but not as much as the original. Same goes for Run DMC's version of Walk This Way. Also, I haven't heard the original version of "Dazed and Confused", but I don't think it would be as good as Led Zeppelin's version.

Does Eric Clapton's unplugged version of Layla count as a cover?

Also, some of Weird Al's songs are better than the originals.

Crazy Frog sucks.

Blinded by the Light covered by Manfred Mann's Earth band

They did a number of Springsteen covers far better than him....incuding "Spirits In The Night".

To this list I'd also add Mat Weddle's version of Outkast's "Hey Ya" (check YouTube...you won't believe what a nice tune that really is!).

Wanna hear a bunch of Hendrix tunes not only covered WELL, but literally re-invented? Check out Phil Brown's "The Jimmi Project". Jimmy Haslip on bass....'nuff said.

I also like the Ben Folds Five cover of "Video Killed The Radio Star" along with Ben's solo version of "Songs of Love" (originally written by The Divine Comedy).

Another really good cover that I'm surprised hasn't been mentioned yet is the Ataris version of "Boys of Summer" by Don Henley from a few years back.

Other good ones that come to mind:

Less Than Jake - Surrender (orig. by Cheap Trick)
Smashing Pumpkins - Landslide (orig. by Fleetwood Mac)

The Ataris version of Boys of Summer … more energy less production than the Don Henley original.

Fortunate Son the old Credence Clearwater tune … as done live on the Sing Me Back Home CD by Ivan Neville and company. Hard not to like the NOLA vibe.

First off, We can work it out by Stevie Wonder as someone said earlier is very good and a display of excellent multi-tracking of vocals. Stevie Wonder also covered "Light my fire" which was excellent and he covered Bob Dylans "Blowin in the wind" which was also a good cover. Those are just some, I know they are very subjective as some people may find the original better. "light my fire" I do not neccesarily place Wonders as better than the doors just good. Just like I do not agree with someone who said that the Chili Peppers Higher ground is better than Wonder's.

The only way I may like a cover version is if I heard it for the first time without knowing the original (and I liked it, of course - Hendrix's version of "Hey Joe" comes to mind). No matter how "polished" or "interestingly arranged" the songs are, you won't find a single tribute album in my LP/CD collection. One of my bandmates has always been fascinated with "Working Man", the Rush tribute album, which boasts an impressive personnel for sure, but the work is not my cup of tea anyway. It pissed me off when he wanted to do the "Never Turn Your Back On A Monster!" section of "La Villa Strangiato" (one of my favorite sections of the tune, BTW) the way it was recorded for that compilation (he actually did it having agreed not to do it (http://media.putfile.com/Never-Turn-Your-Back-On-A-Monster) and I wanted to strangle him that night). I love the shuffle feel of that part and the "impressive" drum arrangement totally ruins it to me. That's a good example of those "musicianship displays" that annoy me.

BTW, Joe Cocker's version of "With A Little Help From My Friends" isn't a cover for me but a totally different song that borrowed the lyrics from another one. I like it.

That's my explanation for why I prefer the Chili Pepper's version of Higher Ground than the original. I listened to them both, and I decided to add the Chili Pepper's version to my Mix CD.

I figger if yer gonna rerecord someone elses song make it different - make it yours (or your bands).

This doesn't apply to cover bands, although I've heard cover bands that did rearrange stuff and were very clever about it.

Oh! If any of you have ever heard Garth Brooks live acoustic version of "American Pie"..........he totally nails it. Nothing wrong with Don McLean's version at all, but Garth really got it.

Three that really stand out, that I don't think were mentioned in this thread:

Van Halen doing the Kinks, You Really Got Me

Dead Kennedys doing Elvis, Viva Las Vegas

Rolling Stones doing the Temptations,(Just My) Imagination

I also like Manfred Mann and the Ataris versions of the songs mentioned above.

I was in GC yesterday and I heard Johnny Cash doing his take on Depeche Mode's Personal Jesus. Absolutely awesome!

Tower of Power's version of James Taylor's "Steamroller" (from the Sketches of James CD)

Just about any song covered by Cold Blood back in the day, especially "I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free," and (another song by JT) "Lo and Behold"

Taking the chance that I might sound like a tool, I think any song Pantera covered was better than the original.

Speaking of Tool, I also agree that "No Quarter" sounded better than the Zeppelin version but I still like the original regardless.

Metallica's cover of the Queen song "Stone Cold Crazy" was better than the original IMO.

And of notable mention here, Corrosion of Conformity's cover of CCR's "Fortunate Son" isn't better than the original, but just as cool and is a really sweet take on the classic.

+1 and whoever said Alien Ant Farm's Smooth Criminal was better than MJ's needs to clean out their ears no offense. No one does that song like Michael Jackson.

Oh yea and Guns of Brixton by Nouvelle Vague originally by the Clash. They gave it a totally different vibe that I think fits the song better.

Any cover of Dylan original material. Bob Dylan is one great composer and poet/lyricist, but I can't stand his voice, lo-fi recordings, or overly simple arrangements.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think that song was written for Robert Wyatt by Elvis Costello and Clive Langer, but then Elvis recorded it himself. So who's covering who is debatable.
Anyway, any song with Bruce Thomas on bass is better than the same song without.

Hallelujah - Jeff Buckley covering Leonard Cohen's original

Haunting and powerful, but its use in crappy TV shows finales and films cheapens Buckley's legacy a bit. Still a great song.

plus Nirvanas cover of Bowie's Man Who Sold The World is sick

this is a bit different, but i dislike Cat Steven's cover of I Shot The Sheriff, Bob Marley's original is the best by far.

Al Jareau's version of Your song, by Elton John

Leon Russell's version of Jumping Jack Flash on Concert for Bangladesh

One thing is obvious from this thread, besides the point about most Dylan covers being better then the originals. Mad Dogs and Englishman (Joe Cocker) is the best cover band ever!

I have always liked that one, too.
Another one can be found on the Johnny Winter And Live album.

That is a cool one. Will Lee covered that with Hiram Bullock on Live at Mannys car wash.

Another great band that does a lot of covers is the Meters. Their covers of Come Together, Love the One Your With, Just Kissed My Baby, and Honky Tonk Women are all seriously smoking.

The Rascal Flatts version of Life is a Highway is a little too country, and too polished, but it's better because they don't sound like they are falling down drunk.

David Lee Roth's Tobacco Road

Exodus' version of Overdose sounds the way I think ACDC would have done it in 1986

Slayer made both Inna Gadda Da Vida and Dissident Aggressor their own, just as Judas Priest was always able to do when they did covers.

Rigor Mortis' version of Psychotherapy

The Accused has a version of Boris the Spider and Devil Woman that have to be heard.

And I hate to admit it, but Cobain's melody in the Nirvana version of Plateau is better, but he screwed it up by not being able to hit the notes.

I never thought the Tool cover of No Quarter was all that memorable.
