VIEW FULL LIVE VERSION : After seeing Rush last night it all makes sense
Beorht-Dana 06-28-2007, 11:11 AM I now understand how Geddy Lee gets his warm, tender, juicy bass sound. He plays through rotisseries! The sweet, honey-glazed tone was delicious!

use [] brackets instead of <> and do don't forget the / in the ending command
Justin Tuskey 06-28-2007, 11:14 AM haha you fixed it anyways :-p
Tony G 06-28-2007, 11:16 AM Weird....I'll be seeing Rush on Saturday. Will they give out free chicken? BTW, is that screen down in front of him a tele-prompter for the lyrics???
stevetx19 06-28-2007, 11:18 AM possibly...do you think anyone can remember 30+ years of song lyrics...?

I figure that a band like that has done those songs thousands of times that it would just be second nature...
He dumped the dryers and went with rotisseries.
Until seeing behind the scenes footage from their recent DVD's I had no idea how funny these guys are. :p
If you haven't seen it already. Search You Tube for Geddy's sledding safety PSA (Public Service Announcement). It's a total hoot!
Great pic.

I don't understand. Why dryers, and now rotisseries?
DayoftheGreek 06-28-2007, 11:23 AM He used to have his amps behind him, but when they switched to new stuff, they put his amps under the stage. He didn't like the absence of space behind him, so he put vending machines, washers, and driers behind him to fill the void.

I can't remember half of the stuff I said five minutes ago, let alone some of the lyrics to songs I've done over and over and over.

Forgive my lack of Rush knowledge, but why did they put his amps under the stage?
MonetBass 06-28-2007, 11:24 AM I'm sure it's an inside joke. Originally the dryers were from a very wet concert (Rio maybe?) where they were constantly drying stuff, so they thought they'd save time (and be funny) by putting them onstage.
I guess these guys get very hungry while playing.
DayoftheGreek 06-28-2007, 11:26 AM Forgive my lack of Rush knowledge, but why did they put his amps under the stage?
Geddy wanted to "feel" his playing more. And also, now he does a direct in connection, so I don't think he even has any amps... just the speakers under the stage. I'm not sure if thats accurate though.
wideload 06-28-2007, 11:27 AM Its either tabs to help get that Geddy vibe, or he's so automatic he's watching reruns of Heroes.

I think you mean "It ought to be second nature / At least that's how I feel / Now I lay me down in Dreamland / I know perfect's not for real." Thats kind of mistake Geddy might have made had he not had the lyrics right there for him.
;)

lol....:D
Beorht-Dana 06-28-2007, 11:41 AM In all seriousness though, it was a great show. A little heavy on material from the new album for my tastes, but I won't complain about it. They played my two favorite songs, Limelight and Subdivisions, and the only thing that I can say I am REALLY disapointed I didn't get to hear was Vital Signs.
infect 06-28-2007, 11:46 AM YYZ? :eyebrow: :bassist:
SirCanealot 06-28-2007, 01:51 PM Weird....I'll be seeing Rush on Saturday. Will they give out free chicken? BTW, is that screen down in front of him a tele-prompter for the lyrics???
I don't see a keyboard, so I assume he's dumped keyboards completely for this tour and is going completely on tarus pedals. I assume the monitor dealays what the pedals are currently set to, as he's now pushing a lot of synths through those pedals.
Just a guess ^^
steve66 06-28-2007, 02:25 PM YYZ? :eyebrow: :bassist:
They played YYZ at their concert in Florida
Larry99 06-28-2007, 03:12 PM I never heard anything about Geddy's amps being under the stage. Rush uses in-ear monitors these days and Geddy just goes direct to the board. He can "feel" the bass from the house sound and the ear monitor gives him the clarity and definition. Hence, no need for amps.
You can see a keyboard peaking out the right side of the pic in the thread.

Dude! Looks like you were right next to me! I was Sec 2 row E Seat 1!
I saw myself on the screen during "Spirit of the Radio"! Geddy tossed a T-shirt just over my hands!
I loved Alex's "groupies" on his pedal board!

Right. In the last couple of interviews in the bass magazines he's consistently said about running the bass direct (SansAmp and other direct boxes), no amp or "speakers under the stage." Where do they come up with that?

Ha, nah I was in the nosebleed seats. Section 11. :( That pic was actually from another show I think. I just found it on Google.
Infect: Yes, they did play YYZ
SirCanealot: Geddy was playing keyboards. You just can't see them in this picture.
Troutdog 06-28-2007, 06:13 PM I read somewhere, I think in a recent Alex Lifeson article about his touring gear, that the computer-screens on-stage are primarily for large illuminated setlists so they can see them better when the stage goes dark. I guess they could have lyrics, too, but the article didn't mention that.

He's said in interviews he runs speakers under the stage so he can "feel the bass". *shrugs*

He's probably got the hockey game on there. :D
SuperSnake2012 06-28-2007, 08:53 PM I'm getting the dryers got too heavy... :D

I remember seeing a "overhead" shot on RIR, where it looked like it was lyrics coming up on geddys screen.
By-Tor 06-29-2007, 07:52 AM The dryers are coin operated, when the dryers would stop, a guy would run on stage and put change in them to keep them going. Funny stuff.
Geddy's screen is probably keeping him up to date on his fantasy baseball teams...
barkatozz 07-07-2007, 10:08 PM Saw them last night in Camden, NJ @ the Tweeter Center......They rocked!!!!

JimmyM 07-08-2007, 03:41 AM Does Alex still do those painfully annoying Paris Hilton rants? Alex should be seen and not heard. Just play guitar and let Geddy talk.

What?! Those are HILARIOUS!
Alex should talk all night... "That's Jazz... Jazz is WEIRD!"
Pete C 07-08-2007, 01:48 PM Alex does Paris Hilton rants? My respect for him just went through the roof. Truly an awesome guy.
JimmyM 07-08-2007, 05:31 PM Geddy having rotisseries behind him when he's playing is funny. Geddy's sledding video is funny. Alex ranting about how Paris Hilton did nothing but is famous is not only not funny, but it plays right into her hand.
steve21 07-08-2007, 07:35 PM Doesn't Alex just rant about whatever happens like throughout his day?
Baird6869 07-08-2007, 07:42 PM Geddy plays direct through a Tech 21 Sansamp RBI (no amps or cabs), so the rotiserrie, washing machines and vending machines are just his way of being funny and filling up the space on his side of the stage where his cabs used to go.
Alex usually rants about what is on his mind on any given day. It is usually pretty funny. Kinda like what Gord Downie of the Tragically Hip does but understandable.
Tony G 07-08-2007, 07:56 PM I saw them at SPAC in Saratoga Springs, NY just last weekend, and I don't remember Alex saying a word....Geddy did all the talking, and he kept it short and to the point. Overall it was a very cool show and I'm glad I got to see them.
gkbass13 07-08-2007, 08:26 PM wow, didnt even realize they came to spac tony...oh well. i love the chicken rotisseries though. a couple friends and i had a conversation today about the huge stacks of speakers displayed at so many shows, that usually serve no sonic purpose, and are purely aesthetic....i think geddy is making a fun poke at that tradition with hsi recent stage setups.
KeithPas 07-08-2007, 08:37 PM Those rotisieree units get pretty hot, I would'nt want them anywhere near me if I was playing, unless I was getting chow from them. Too hot on the stage most of the time without having those things around.
JimmyM 07-08-2007, 09:06 PM I wonder if Geddy has a Frank Perdue endorsement. And I wonder what they do with all the chickens at the end of a gig. Might be a retro revolution with the stagehands...getting paid in chickens! The barter system, just like they used to do it!
PilbaraBass 07-08-2007, 09:15 PM I think front-loader washing machines would be cool...that way he can do his and the crew's laundry while performing...
:)
JimmyM 07-08-2007, 10:07 PM Next tour, Geddy should set up peep show booths with live dancers.
Hemitom 07-08-2007, 10:36 PM Right. In the last couple of interviews in the bass magazines he's consistently said about running the bass direct (SansAmp and other direct boxes), no amp or "speakers under the stage." Where do they come up with that?

Larry99 07-10-2007, 08:44 AM Ryan also sends the trace signal to a Trace Elliot cabinet beneath the stage. “because if I don’t the amp will just blow”
Interesting, thanks for that info. I can see where the confusion lies however it still sounds like he just uses the cab to provide a "dummy" load. The Trace Quatrovalve probably can't operate on infinite impedance (no cabs connected), so it needs to see 4 or 8 ohms. I don’t think it has anything to do with on-stage sound re-enforcement.
Spector_Ray 07-10-2007, 09:25 AM I'm getting the dryers got too heavy... :D
I think front-loader washing machines would be cool...that way he can do his and the crew's laundry while performing...
The dryers are light but the washers are a b*tch to move!
The chickens are fake, by the way. ;)
And the Paris Hilton rant... oh c'mon, it was just a one-time, off-the-cuff thing Alex did (like all his "rants.") I thought it was hilarious. ;)
