I'm taking delivery of my first 6-string bass today and I don't think I have a single CD where the bassist utilizes a 6-string bass (except maybe the Chick Corea Electric Band). Can you guys/gals recommend some 6-string bassists/bands/CDs/DVDs/etc., so I can begin to learn some new licks. Can be any genre: jazz, rock, country, anything is OK really.

Al Di Meola- Elegant Gypsy (Anthony Jackson, inventor of the 6 i believe, plays on lots of Al's recordings)

Most of Dream Theater's recordings feature John Myung using the 6.

Lee Ritenour - Live at The Coconut Grove

A very good dvd that has Anthony Jackson on six string throughout the whole show. A few tracks have Brian Bromberg on upright. The best version of Etude that Lee has ever done is on here, IMO.

Lee Ritenour - Overtime

This is available in dvd or cd. One of the coolest shows you'll find. Has AJ on six, Dave Carpenter on upright and Melvin Lee Davis on 4,5 and 7 string. :) This was recorded just a few years ago and is a great find

John Abercrombie, Bob Mintzer, Peter Erskine and John Patitucci - The Hudson Project

This is a concert/clinic that can be found on cd and dvd. The dvd version has alot of clinic footage. John talks and presents a lot of good ideas. He plays six and upright. Well worth it.

Drummers Collective 25th Anniversary

This dvd has more than one band on it but the first trio is Horacio "El Negro" Hernandez, John Patitucci and Oriente Lopez. John plays six string throughout their set. Alot of soloing from John too.

Michel Petrucciani - Live in Germany

Michel Petrucciani, Steve Gadd and Anthony Jackson put together a concert that you won't soon forget. The late jazz virtuoso leads this trio through some of the most amazing music you'll hear in the jazz world. Anthony even solo's some. ;) It's an overseas dvd that you'll need a multi-region player for. But if you can make it work, you won't regret it.

Michel Camilo - Triangulo

This is one of my absolute favorite jazz albums. The interplay between Michel, El Negro and Anthony is just awe inspiring. I've listened to this album more times than I can count. Please pick this up for yourself if you're at all a fan of jazz.

Well that's a starter list. There are a ton of albums that I didn't mention yet, but I would have no problem doing so if you want to hear about them.

Enjoy!

You'll find that a lot of New Order tracks have the bassist Peter Hook using a 6-string Shergold Marathon bass.
In particular is the now famous track Blue Monday. It was originally written to test out their new drum machine, and became the best selling 12" in the history of music.
I'll include a link for the video- http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=ts9r0QHuFHw

Enjoy- if you want me to email you the actual track from my music collection, I'm more than glad- just PM me.

The new Hiromi album has Tony Grey playing his new Fodera Monarch 6 string throughout - it's a great record and both the bass and Tony sound great on it - there are some great pocket bass parts and three lovely solos too.

Looks like I won't get that 6-string until Satuday A.M., so this will give me some time to check out all these suggestions. Thanks everybody.

I discovered that alot of these songs are available on iTunes, which, as you may already know, allows you to sample around 30 seconds of each song on a CD, making it very convenient to pick and choose individual tracks.
