VIEW FULL LIVE VERSION : Derek Smalls: visionary
richnota 06-29-2007, 09:26 PM Seeing the post on Derek's Lakland's custom bass inspired me to post.
Derek has done so much for the art of bass playing. I have trouble putting it into words.

Philbiker 06-30-2007, 08:50 AM Got a link to that post?
I love that American Express is using "GSM" in some of their commercials.
Busker 06-30-2007, 09:09 AM I watched This Is Spinal Tap for like, the 87th time the other day. I finally noticed that on one song, Big Bottom I think it was, that Derek, Nigel and David were all playing bass guitars on that song. I'm sure they were all on 11.
sonicvi 06-30-2007, 11:47 AM I heard he's in rehab right now for internet addiction.
monkeyhaiku 06-30-2007, 11:55 AM Derek Smalls vs. William Murderface: who would your money be on?

Yeah, the first time I saw that I busted out laughing and no one else in the room could figure out why.

hmmm murderface has got to have some extra points for his penis slap bass solo.

You're a bass player...
you've watched Spinal Tap 87 times...
and you just noticed they were all playing bass on Big Bottom?

Hey, give me a break. I've only been a bass player since December.

No breaks. Once a bass player - always a bass player... :p

Alan Vorse 07-02-2007, 03:30 PM I actually think the basslines on those songs were pretty damn good! Great tone too.
BassBus 07-02-2007, 03:38 PM Spinal Tap really made a big contribution to rock music. Nigel Tuffnal's intelect just numbs my mind.
Aarix 07-03-2007, 12:03 PM I think it's time for a little Jazz Odyssey (http://www.spinaltapfan.com/atozed/TAP00267.HTM)...

Not only is everyone playing a bass on big bottom but Derek's work on the double neck bass on that tune is landmark...

That really wasn't meant to sound nasty, I was just kidding ya! Sometimes sarcasm gets the best of me.

No prob.
It's my all-time favorite rockumentary.
I especially like the scenes that feature Nigel Teufnal - these go to 11, large bread, where he plays "Mach" on the piano, etc.
richnota 07-03-2007, 10:23 PM Just in case you haven't memorized the words....
The bigger the cushion, the sweeter the pushin'
That's what I said
The looser the waistband, the deeper the quicksand
Or so I have read
My baby fits me like a flesh tuxedo
I'd like to sink her with my pink torpedo
Big bottom, big bottom
Talk about bum cakes, my girl's got 'em
Big bottom drive me out of my mind
How could I leave this behind?
I met her on Monday, twas my lucky bun day
You know what I mean
I love her each weekday, each velvety cheek day
You know what I mean
My love gun's loaded and she's in my sights
Big game is waiting there inside her tights, yeah
Big bottom, big bottom
Talk about mud flaps, my girl's got 'em
Big bottom drive me out of my mind
How could I leave this behind?

I have to admit, I kind of dug that...:hiding:
Audiophage 07-05-2007, 11:07 AM If Mingus and Meshell had a kid it still would only be half the bass player that Derek Smalls is.
Otacon 07-07-2007, 03:48 PM I registered to TalkBass just to post this, Im watching spinal tap at the live earth concert and then they start doing big bottom and i think hey thats cool, then all the bass players from all the bands that are playing that day come out and they all play big bottom at least like 30 bass players on one stage. Highlight of my day
Andrew Jones 07-07-2007, 03:51 PM Highlight of my day
Highlight of my month, at least.

How could I leave this behind? In and right after high school I played in a band which covered this song and I sang it. I remember we played at a community pool party there were a bunch of ladies in their 40s and 50s sitting right in front of us and I was singing this. I backed off the mic quite a bit.
We also played "Rock And Roll Creation". We were at a big graduation party for our own class. Think of that, you're playing in what is by a very large margin the best band in the school (not really meaning to toot my own horn, but I'm not big on false modesty - we absolutely kicked ass.) at one of the biggest graduation parties of the senior class. It's one of your best performances - everyone in the band is ON. The crowd is absolutely loving every song, reacting very positively. And then "Rock And Roll Creation". That was a rowdy fun crowd for every song, but after that song, dead silence. After about three seconds, one guy shouted "That song effing sucked!" but he didn't say "eff" he said the real word. Me and George our guitar player and Jim the drummer were in stitches. George could barely stand. We had a hard time starting the next song we were laughing so hard.
Thing is "Rock and Roll Creation" is really tough to pull off and we had to put a LOT of work into it. All for nothing but a joke for our own amusement. Ahh.... Gotta love high school....
