Two pickups are better than one, right? Nedmundo 06-30-2007, 10:04 AM To me, the more direct comparison would be the Big Block P vs. the G&L L-1500, because both are "sweet spot" humbucker basses. I have an L-1500, and I've tried the Big Block, which occupies a similar tonal neighborhood despite its lack of the mighty MFD humbucker. I wasn't real impressed with the Fender's feel and construction though, which goes against the general trend of improved quality in Fender's MIM models. I'd take a used L-1500 any day, but maybe I just caught a bad example of the Big Block. Who knows? The L-1500 and Big Block have a unique tone, and aren't nearly as versatile as an L-2000. If you're looking for the specifically aggressive tone of something like the L-1500 or Big Block (or EBMM Sterling), go for it, but if you want maximum versatility with boatloads of punch for hard rock, get the L-2000. I love my L-1500, but if I could have only one bass to cover everything, I'd take a Jazz, Precision or L-2000 first. K-T 07-01-2007, 06:10 AM hay all, thanks for all the input, :) but will i get the same/similar sound if i put the mini-toggle pickup selector on the bridge pickup? Nedmundo 07-01-2007, 10:15 AM No, because the L-2000's bridge pickup is closer to the bridge than the single pickup on the L-1500, and I assume the Big Block is similar to the L-1500. Look at pics on the Fender and G&L sites and you should get a rough idea. The L-1500's single pickup is more a beefy bridge pickup sound than a neck pickup sound. It has much more "cut" than "boom," but does have a fairly thick, punchy low end. fourstringbliss 07-01-2007, 04:11 PM No, because the L-2000's bridge pickup is closer to the bridge than the single pickup on the L-1500, and I assume the Big Block is similar to the L-1500. If this is what you're looking for it's possible to install a three-way, on-on-on, series/single coil/parallel toggle switch in place of the series parallel switch that allows the inner coils to be selected. With both inner coils selected you have effectively moved either of the humbuckers to the middle and the sound is punchy, cutting, and thick. |
