saw her lastnite at the paradise. amazing amazing amazing.
i've seen her 4 times, methinks. lastnite was probably the best she's ever sounded. i did get the feeling that some folks in the crowd were not into it...y'know, the same people who wish she would go back to her 'if that's your boyfriend' scene.

I, for one, prefer Meshell's older music, but I really respect her willingness to challenge herself. She is a gifted musician who aims to be great. That makes her a great role model, IMO.:)

What kind or repertoire is she playing these days, and what kind of band?
Last time I saw her was with the Spirit Music Jamia Project, with Chris Dave on drums, and it blew my mind.

it was a 5-piece band :
Charles Haynes (drums)
Mark Kelley (bass) his bass sounded fierce!
Oren Bloedow (guitar)
Jason Lindner (keys)
she did some bass playing, did some singin, and a lot of groovin.
she's doin more...egh, i guess it could be called rock. i dunno, it's just awesome. she did a joy division cover, it was FURIOUS!
there's a song [called sloganeer]on her myspace that gives a good idea of her sound these days:

She played in Toronto a couple of weeks ago. Awesome show, the new band is killer. They did some very cool grooves where the bassist was playing behind the beat and the drummer was playing ahead of it.
I love the new direction she's taking but then again I'm biased because I think everything she does is incredible.

I saw her seven or eight years ago in St. Louis and it was AMAZING. I felt sorry for her backup bassist (Dyson?) He sounded great, but when Meshell picked up the bass, the groove got WAY, WAY deeper. That woman just has 'something' in her playing that very few others have.
I'm with Dr. Cheese.... the recent stuff has not really held much interest for me. But, her first couple CD's were 'deep about the groove'!
