VIEW FULL LIVE VERSION : How do you make your living?
I was just wondering, it my be interesting to see what bass players do to make thier money. I dont know how many here, if any, rely on musical talents entirely. I suspect that we probably have a very diverse sampling of occupations.
Since I started it, I am first.
I am an electrician by trade.
I also expect to see lost of other tradesmen here.

Staci 01-16-2000, 08:31 PM Registered Nurse here. Work part-time on a Cardiac unit.---Staci.
...anybody ever see "The American Gigolo"?
Appliance Tech.
ask me your washing machine/microwave/refrig questions off topic if you want, and if Paul will let you,but most nights I get home pretty late,so I may not get around to 'em for a while.
grussell 01-17-2000, 03:50 AM I work for the City running the Local Law Enforcement Unit (for U.S. people that's not the Police - cops are a state responsibility in Australia)which is by laws/ordinances and stuff. Guess I'm a bureaucrat which is why I need to play bass - keeps me human - are bass players human?:-^

Bruce Lindfield 01-17-2000, 04:26 AM I work as a Direct Marketing Consultant - but in the area of Information Management (we actually call it Knowledge Management now http://talkbass.com/ubb/wink.gif). I build network databases - at least it gives me free Internet access!
My "employer" is the Post Office - although as I say this is on consultancy basis. So you could say I'm like a Civil Servant.
I'm a poor french student in engineering.
Player 01-17-2000, 11:32 AM I used to be an electrician (still do side jobs, mostly family) Now I'm a stock broker.

Paul-no...I was joking(if you had seen the movie, well,...my "joke" might've made more sense). Anyway, I see that "my" humor sucks; poor MorganM over at the OFF TOPIC section thinks I actually own TWO real birds!
So to answer the question at hand...I'm a US Civil Servant.
Onur Francois Sengul 01-18-2000, 05:53 PM Hi,
I usually see that, most of the bass players are technical stuff.I am studying engineering, and most of the bassists in Turkey are engineer or technician or something like that...Its my observation of course... http://talkbass.com/ubb/smile.gif
Cheers from Istanbul
Keep 'em coming Jim--I'm right with you, although now I'm wondering how many of MY wise-ass remarks are falling short as well.
I'll laugh at your jokes if you'll laugh at mine though.
USAF here, by the way.
Mechanical engineer by degree; "applications engineer" by org chart. I figure out what kind of special machines our company will sell, and estimate (read: guess) how much they will cost to make.
Music is so mathematical yet so full of expressive posssibilities... a "numbers" guy like me can feel somewhat at home while blowing out some cobwebs to stay sane once in a while.
*lump*, buddy.
Most of 'em are working...
JimK,
I don't think Player missed your joke. I think you missed his.
And Lump, Eli's right. They work. Well.

I just got back into playing after almost 20 years, so the band I'm in isn't making money yet either, but they're a talented group of guys.

Robert B 01-21-2000, 09:59 PM Hey Lump -- I'm USAF too, stationed at Langley. Remind me to tell you sometime what the movers did to my MusicMan Sabre shipping it back from Korea. Not a pretty picture...
Robert B,
So far I haven't had anything busted coming BACK from Korea (twice now), but every time I PCS over there the stateside movers wreck something. I'm gonna be watching 'em like a hawk when I go back to Osan this summer, that's for sure.
My problem was always with the German movers.
A bunch of fat guys in orange jump suites that bring a case of beer in with 'em. Ya gotta expect trouble there.
Dave
I've been working for the last three years inflicting pain on fine young people--dental assistant for an orthodontist. I just quit and am now spending the winter like a real Canadian. On unemployment that is. The crazy thing is that now that I dumped my job I am eligible for a grant to start up a bass program for youngsters. Long live the Queen eh.
JimK - I though your little gigolo remark ment that you were being supported by your wife. opps
Robert B 01-23-2000, 09:04 AM Hi Anna -- Funny thing, I thought JimK's remark meant he was being supported by other men's wives! http://talkbass.com/ubb/smile.gif (just kidding, of course...)
That Bass Program for children sounds exciting! Isn't it wonderful how our lives take unexpected turns? Please keep us posted as to your progress.
Take care,

swolves 01-25-2000, 11:38 PM hey Robert B and Lump and all else
I was a pro musician who toured with the uso/dod for many yrs i played a gig at camp bonifes near the 38 parallel also played at
punson, youngson and every other base in korea. either of you guys remember Itawon(what a place dont think my spelling is write)anyhow bought the wife lots of korean
trinkits.and had way to much fun.
also played in turkey, about 5 out of 7 continents all together.
Robert B 01-26-2000, 05:30 PM Swolves -- I remember Itaewon very well -- dropped a few dollars there myself. Lump is also a veteran of the ROK. Did you ever make it to Germany?
------------------
Robert B
Swolves,
I can't for the life of me figure out what camp near the 38th you're talking about. Thought I'd seen 'em all. I guess it depends on how close. In my 2 solid years there I never got more than 10 miles AWAY from the DMZ. I was at Camp Casey, in Tonduchon.
Those Air Force guys got it made.
Dave
Camp Bonifas is the base camp for the JSA at Panmunjom. It's named after Captain Arthur G. Bonifas who, along with Lt. Mark T. Barrett, was hacked to death by North Korean soldiers in 1976 when they led a party of ROK soldiers to prune a tree obstructing their view near the Bridge of No Return. You can't get much closer to the Z. If you've ever been up to the JSA, you've been there.

Wow lump when i heard that story it almost made me cry. the guys at bonifes (they were called the merry monks)said that axe was in a museum in nkorea and one day we would bring it back.
look forward to hearing more from you guys.
swolves 01-26-2000, 11:13 PM hey gman i also played at camp casey i think i was there when the old man kim ilsung died
we were kinda scared because his son said he would lay his father to rest in seoul.

Damn Lump, you're a walking encyclopedia !
I was on the ROK 84-86. Was the camp named at that time?
I never got to Panmunjom. I think it was Camp Gary Owen was the closest. Its the one that you can look across the valley and see the huge North Korean flag. Very different up there. Its an experience that will change your thinking about our sense of security and freedom.
And Lump, if you do your duty up there, and I cant imagine that, sorry about the AF jab.
Dave
swolves 01-27-2000, 10:42 AM hey Gman swolves here the camp name was origanaly liberty it was named (like so many others) after the good captian was killed. i think in 76 any way you got one thing right ill never take our security for granted. speaking of that flag if you saw it you were
very close. however that thing is huge! by the way when we were on breaks at our show i would stan outside and smoke and you could here the propaganda coming over these giant P.A. stacks it was VERY SUREAL(when guys trade stories about there strangest gigs,
this is the one i tell) <BLOCKQUOTE><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial">quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Gman:Chuck

gman,
Jab away. I work in a joint environment right now, and we pick on each other's cultures mercilessly (but we pretty much all agree the Navy is just whacked). Been to the JSA only as a visitor, by the way.
But this summer when I'm lying in a smelly binjo ditch at Osan in the 100 degree heat in MOPP 4, I'll try to remember how easy I have it... http://talkbass.com/ubb/tongue.gif
Air Force.....MOPP-4? Are you kidding? You're familiar with the term, so you must not be. It truly is percieved by most of the Army, that the AF doesn't train that way.
I swear to you, I've lived in that SH*T for up to 4 days, not taking that damned mask off for the whole time. Good thing they didn't issue us cyanide pills. After a couple days in that stuff you start praying for either the "all clear", or death, doesn't really matter.
Lump, do you ever get any European duty?
Sounds like it's all Korea. And I figured you probably spent it in Osan. Do you get to take your family? Up in the northern parts you can't.
Swolves, Thank you for saying Camp Liberty. Makes perfect sense now.
Oh, and by the way, you're freakin me out with all the quotations in your posts. Dont know whos post I'm reading.

Yeah, it's been getting tougher for us zoomies since the end of the Cold War. In fact, on my last TDY to Hawaii, the maids at the Hale Koa didn't leave a mint on my pillow when they turned down my covers at night. I slept so badly I almost missed my tee time.
And Korea is the only place I go. But I do get to take my family though, which helps.
Ok. That's my last military-related post. I come here to escape that stuff, and it's probably boring the others to tears. Email is cool though.
sundog 01-28-2000, 02:39 PM I'm a Computer Technician / programmer / network engineer....yada, yada, yada.
I've been a musician for 25 years and some 10 years of it, doing it full time.
I'm also a professional artist...portraits, sculpture...yada, yada, yada.
I was completely out of music for about five years...I mean completely! I didn't even own an instrument or listen to music. It was total burnout.
There was a big R&R revival around here and all the old bands got back together. So I played one gig...
Then I got divorced...needless to say it's good to be back. http://talkbass.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Pieman 02-02-2000, 09:53 AM Hi everyone, I've been looking for a forum like this for a while, and just looking through the threads, it's just what I was after.
Anyway, I'm a computer consultant/ network engineer/ professional nerd, that sort of thing.
Cheers, The Pie!
Silfver 02-11-2000, 10:32 PM I´m a poor student, sound engineering. I will be rich but not when it comes to money.

craigb 02-22-2000, 12:54 AM I'm a software developer for a computer hardware manufacturer (doing web-based enterprise management stuff).
My current band, like most I've been in, is composed completely of people who work here (although I don't work with any of them on a day-to-day basis). Two other guys I do work with are bass players as I found out one of the human factors guys used to be.
Phat Ham 02-22-2000, 04:05 AM Just a lowly high school senior waiting for college parties.
I can say that I worked for two months over the summer as a consular clerk/receptionist at the American Consulate, Fukuoka Japan. Now I have a whole 2000 bucks sitting in a bank waiting for me to buy a bass or rig with it.
bssclf 02-24-2000, 03:10 PM I'm a mortgage banker/mortgage underwriter.
Deal with PILES OF FILES...but it pays the bills. Played full-time professionally for 20 years. Guess I should be happy that I was able to do that.
Getting ready to turn 50, but still jammin!!

LarryH 02-28-2000, 02:14 AM Hey JimK. I got as close to "Gigolo" as possible. My wife teaches college, directs theatre, and some other stuff. I take care of our 2 kids, do PC repair on the side, and play in a working band (though we're on a short break). I haven't held a "real" job in 7 years. It's a tough life!! http://talkbass.com/ubb/wink.gif
Take care!!

GRAVY 03-03-2000, 10:54 AM I am a Nuclear Medicine Field Service Engineer by profession, but in my spare time I like to fool around with the bass. In the past I have been in 4 different bands as a lead vocalist (which is my true love), but I'm taking out some time to record some new songs and try to find a levelheaded bass player with alot of funk in his or her soul! Peace http://talkbass.com/ubb/cool.gif
P.S. Let me know if you are that person
Monkey 03-11-2000, 06:47 PM I'm a junior high social studies teacher. I left teaching a couple of times to play full-time, and I managed to make a living (if you could call it that), but had a hard time raising a daughter on the money and the schedule. I don't live to teach school, but I like my relationship with music better now that I am teaching again. I can choose when and with whom I play, instead of taking every gig in every sleazy bar around.
Chris A 03-11-2000, 07:32 PM I am a scheduler in a dental lab. I juggle the opinions of department heads, dentists, dental assistants, and the occasional patient. I teach a few students a week to supplement the fact that my band is only playing once a month. I do enjoy the occasional session gig, but in New Hampshire they are few and far between!!

Hemlock 03-16-2000, 10:28 AM I graduate next quarter with a BS (appropriate) in Political Science. When I'm not screaming obscenities at C-SPAN, however, I do computer tech support here at the University, and I'll probably end up doing something similar when I grad.
jazzbass 03-19-2000, 07:37 PM Most of you folks have fairly lucrative jobs, frankly I'm a little jealous. I play 5 nights a week at a nightclub, and that's it.

I'm a tax consultant/attorney for a big 5 accounting firm. If that weren't enough fun I am also helping my wife finish her dissertation in developmental psychology (I am pretty good at statistical modeling and editing).
I'm am just beginning to learn the bass (I haven't even bought one yet), but I've screwed around with several other instruments. Oddly, I've always wanted to play bass, it just either wasn't my choice or I knew I didn't have the time and/or money. As an added bonus, my wife plays drums.
Kick A** Skip !! A drummer for a wife ? How cool is that ? Good thing she doesn't play gu***r. Could be hard on your marriage.
Good luck learning. Get that bass and get goin.
Dave
I make it playing bass. 4 bands, 2 jam nights and pimping myself out on off nights. It keeps me sane - NOT! The gigs are out there if you work your ass off for them. 20 years experience and playing any style helps.
Blackbird 03-30-2000, 09:04 AM I graduated with a B.A. in Journalism, but was challenged to find an even less lucrative profession, so I went back to school and am now working on my B.A. in music.
I get my paycheck from the City, though, working as a teacher's aide for the Community College District, where I teach everything from english to algebra, computers to seniors (have you ever tried to teach powerpoint to a sexagenarian (no jokes, please)), working with poeple on welfare and generally making the whole department look good http://www.talkbass.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Thumper 03-30-2000, 09:50 AM I'm a contracting officer for the USAF, I do a lot of foreign military sales stuff and the Royal Saudi Air Force has been paying my wages since 1994.
I was in a bar band in the early 80's until I got this job and had to quit (would you want me to negotiate multi-million dollar deals after I had been out 'til 2 A.M. if it was your money? Actually it is if you're a taxpayer). I now play for fun only, but my current basement band is getting so good (others opinions, not mine) we are getting asked to hit the bar scene. For the sake of the 25 year old guitar player and our 30 year old lead singer, neither of whom have ever done it, I have reluctantly agreed to do it once in a while, and only on a Friday or Saturday.

gweimer 04-08-2000, 11:59 PM I guess I fall into the category that a lot of you do. I do document imaging/scanning systems. Although, I did five years on the road before getting into this computer junk. Just got back into playing again last year. Now, I'm the second-string bass player for a local R&B thing, which split into two bands, and I'm the bassist for that. Also started rehearsal with a third band. Am I nuts?
Bassmonster 04-09-2000, 03:36 PM Either the majority of bassplayers hold technical/military positions, or it's just the fact that this an internet site!! Anyway, I'm a high school senior hoping to make it big:-) I'm working as a lifeguard and dishwasher right now. Saving money to go to college, I'm going to get a Bachelor's in Arts with a major in English.

I'm the Bassmonster....ROWWAAARRRR!!!!
Kerry 04-10-2000, 04:24 PM I'm a booking agent. Now don't throw stuff just yet. The players around KC know I don't lie, I ask the right questions and typically get them pretty good money for the work. I still play, book and from time to time have an opportunity to produce corporate music for videos. Booking was my way of staying in the business and not being on stage everynight. Now I play in a couple of private party bands and just bought an upright and want to get back into playing classical in a civic organization. I played classical when I went through the conversatory here in Kansas City, but I forgot how physical the upright really is...but I'm having fun re-learning. See Ya...
Anthony 04-20-2000, 02:10 PM I've been playing about 30 years and I did it for a living for 12. Had a great time, but began to see the writing on the wall. The club scene started to die out where I live. Seems no one wants to see live entertainment anymore. Nevertheless I still play out any chance I get. Don't make ANY money usually, but I really enjoy it. Now, I'm your basic Techno-Geek. It's not being a Musician for a living but I enjoy the work.
Dave Siff 04-20-2000, 02:37 PM I'm an on-line news editor. As someone else on this thread said, I have a BS degree, how appropriate http://www.talkbass.com/ubb/wink.gif
Laker 04-20-2000, 03:50 PM By day I'm a machine shop supervisor, by education a programmer/analyst, and by choice the bass player in a good ten piece band. The band is just about a full time thing so doing two full time jobs can get a bit tiring. I guess its the price you pay to "have your cake and eat it too".
Steve Lawson 04-22-2000, 04:46 PM I make my living out of this bass stuff - I do session stuff, jazz gigs, solo bass gigs, write for Guitarist magazine (was Bassist, now the two are combined), and teach, privately and at Drumtech/Basstech in London, as well as students from York University! It's great fun not having a 'straight' job, and I don't think I switch to doing just gigs even if I had the choice - the magazine work means I get to meet and hang with all my musical heros, the teaching is perhaps the most rewarding thing anyone can ever do, and the playing is more fun when it's not playing pubs 6 nights a week! My last 'big' gig was with Howard Jones...
cheers
Steve

Greetings from Northern New York
(Yes, there are people up here ;0)
Just discovered this thread....
I've been playing/teaching pretty much full time until just a few weeks ago. The band I've been working with most recently is a college circuit band (i.e.: frat/sorority parties), and it's dried up for the summer. I have also been a window tinter on and off for almost 15 years, mostly off for the past 5 years though, been lucky enough to have relatively steady gigs and plenty of students. So now I'm back to doing window tinting http://www.talkbass.com/ubb/frown.gif UGH!!! Chuck, speaking of hand danger, how about working with 6" razor blades all damn day?!?!? I've managed to have surgery on my HANDS twice in the past 15 years because of those damn things.....can't wait til fall when things pick back up again, and I can dump this nasty job. Living in a college (LSU) town can really suck at times.
Peace

Don't see enough of the left/right brain combination in either the music biz or the business biz...:P
Muttley 05-20-2000, 09:54 AM I'd like to reply to this thread and maybe spin-off a couple new threads at the same time. My day-job is at a university: I'm a lab instrument technician (spectrometers, electron microscopes, etc.)
I've gigged off and on for 30+ years and see
many comments of others that reflect my experiences. I have some questions (hence, maybe some new threads):
(1)Long-time players have noted the decline in venues for live music. Due in part to tougher drunk driving laws, DJ's, etc. The only exception in my part of the woods is country music. What kind of music do YOUR gigs call for?
(2)In my area, there is only one dominant booking agent. Since he also books his own band, we've always felt we wouldn't get access to the better gigs booking with him.
How many of you guys use a booking agent?
(3)Are you responsibile for running the band? i.e. taking care of the equipment, writing the charts, making sure there are batteries for the singers' mics, massaging egos, etc.
Muttley

Pacman 05-27-2000, 07:12 AM Well, I seem to combine two favorites here. I'm a military bassist! (well, for another 10 months or so). I've been playing bass with the Army for the last 12 years, and I'm quitting to make my living as a player for the real world. (that and live off my wife!)
And you guys who've spent time (and money) in Itaewon......heh heh heh

sbassett 05-27-2000, 10:11 PM I'm a divorce lawyer (19 years now). In fact, my entire band consists of divorce lawyers. I have been playing bass only since Aug. 99. I played rhythm guitar in high school a long time ago. Our drummer, pianist, and sax player have all been playing semi-professionally for years (decades, even). We have gigged twice and have a few more scheduled. By the way, what is the difference between criminal law and family law? In criminal law, we deal with the worst people acting their best. In family law, we deal with the best people acting their worst.

Rick Martin 05-28-2000, 01:31 PM I make a survivable living as a variety artist. For the past year and hopefully for many more to come I have been performing a traditional circus style comedy dog act. I have three little dog pound terrier types and they jump through hoops and pull my clown pants down and gags like that. Before this, I worked as a ventriloquist doing a traditional type act and as a magician doing both stage and close up stuff. I juggle and do some silly acrobatic stunts. Nothing fancy. I work at fairs and festivals like Reniassance fairs. I do corporate gigs, schools, kids summer camps, RV parks etc.
I'm always working around other variety artists and most of them play music for fun. Mostly accoustic guitars, but sometimes banjos, fiddles, washboard, sqeezebox, mandolin. At night after the fair is closed, I like to be part of the impromptu jam sessions that happen in the performer camping area where the various acts have RV's set up. I'm always the only bass on site and I get great free lessons in all kinds of musical styles. There often is no electric available at these sessions and that's why I was asking about the Pignose Hog 30. I need a DC rechargeable bass amp so I can jam with the Gypsys.

Anyway, that's a good segue into what I do. I manage computer systems for a defense contractor. I haven't played much since college, but over the last year and a half or so lately I've been using that job to fund a lot of music/recording equipment. I've played guitar since about 1983 but I finally bought a bass this past June. I'm having so much fun learning something new that I've hardly picked up my guitars since then.

mljohn 08-19-2000, 02:45 AM Hey neptoon, it's good to see a fellow squid here on the board. I'm stationed at SIMA out here in San Diego. I'm a Hull Tech. I may be surface Navy but I've been doing a lot of work on Los Angeles class subs Lately. Remember Hunt For Red October? I did some inspections on the actual sub used for that movie. I'm a Quality Assurance inspector who plays with radiation (as opposed to the regular dirty work HTs). Have fun on shore duty and relax a bit.
Any gigs available for you down there?

bassdork 08-27-2000, 01:13 AM I don't know what to tell you guys.
After the Navy (USS Tortuga LSD46)I haven't held the same job for more than a year before moving on.
I guess when my wife finishes med school I get to be a "working musician" regardless of income, YEAH!!!!!!!!
Greywoulf 08-04-2003, 06:27 PM Usta be a systems programmer for a bank in NYC. Retired from that. (Thank God!) I get some gigs now (occasionally) as a conga and djembe player/teacher, and have an ongoing gig as a drum circle facilitator. Am also finishing a book, also a screenplay. Have no idea if they'll sell yet...
I play bass guitar because I love it; had a few (unpaid) gigs in a bar band, but mostly I just jam with friends or play for the local Unitarian church.
I'm addicted to good hand drums (11), and also to basses, (have only 3 of those, so far!). I just totally enjoy the instruments, the sounds...!
Also have driven school buses, cabs, trucks, worked in a factory, worked as a (ugh!) crapped-on office temp, installed carpeting, and waxed floors and cleaned toilets as a janitor in a hospital for a year or so. (Which was a lot better than being an office or a factory temp!) Also worked in an amusement park as a ride operator and also temped in an ice cream plant. (Both of which jobs sucked, actually...)
In the midst of all this I took a year or two off (in over-all time) to travel slowly across the USA and then thru eastern Canada with my ol' lady in a sleep-in Volks van, and also traveled up and down the east coast (NJ to FL) on several 5K trips on various motorcycles.
Right now I consider my work to be just to enjoy life, help some others a bit when and where I can, and to continue developing my literary and musical skills; the main things I consider that make life worth living... (Besides having a great ol' lady at my side, that is! d];>]} )

Edwcdc 08-04-2003, 07:46 PM I'm an operations manager for a delivery company. I played bass full time in the 80's but as others had said, the scene kinda dried up. Also the IRS caught up to me for about $10,000. Guys, make sure you pay taxes on the money you make!!! It can get ugly. I figured it was time to get a straight job. I just got back into music about four years ago. Now I play a couple of times a week.
