Well TB tribe, I've been looking at some G&L Tribute L-2500's and it seems like "scratchy volume/tone controls" is a common problem with these puppies. There is one on the Bay right now with a BIN price of $399. Seems like a good deal but this bass also has the scratchy volume/tone pot issue.

My questions are, since this seems like a common ailment, is this something that's EZ to repair? Is it better to just replace the pots with new ones? Are new pots EZ to get from G&L or should other sources be used?

That generation the pots would need to be replaced if scratchy. If you are good at soldering then it is an easy enough fix. Hit it.

So, contact cleaner spray wouldn't work?

In this specific case, I already asked the seller if he tried to clean the pots and he said that contact spray didn't do the trick.

As I said, due to whatever the cause, the early generation Tribbys if the pots were scratchy they needed replacement. Cleaning doesn't work on them.

G&L sent buttloads of new pots out to cover the warranty on this on both the basses and the geetars. The new Tribby generation uses different pots.

The G&L site has contact information. If you call the number, you might get lucky and have them send you pots free of charge. But given what sounds like an older Tribby, you may get charged.

Thanks for all of your help. As it turns out, someone else snagged the Trib on the Bay. All of this info. really helps for next time around.
