This is a search-engine-friendly text mirror of the TalkBass Forums Dave 07-20-2007, 03:51 PM Dunno what a "butcher block" B stock is, but these seem like good prices on these. http://www.musiciansfriend.com/bass/navigation?q=butcher fenderhutz 07-22-2007, 12:21 PM They have the wrong color online, it literally looks like butcher block you would have in a kitchen, light wood. dusan 07-22-2007, 12:29 PM Is there any who has them at home? Are they worth buying? I would like to have a sixstring and I dont have much money,so they look fine but are they? And are they mainly produced in China? And about quality of finish and that, is it ok? Wademeister63 07-22-2007, 01:00 PM I tried to find a pic of those on the Peavey website with no luck. I bet it has some of this kind of cutting board (http://missiondoorbells.com/images/oakboard.jpg) action going on.. Been thinking hard about this, would be a great way to try out a sixer without breaking the bank. Dave 07-22-2007, 01:22 PM Thats what I thought...I have a sixer coming in next week so Ill report back. I figure if its really that bad I can just send it back. Ryan L. 07-22-2007, 02:29 PM Keep us posted on what the deal is with them. Dave 07-22-2007, 02:40 PM Will do...Ive never heard of this type of B-stock, so Im interested to see what the heck they are. fenderhutz 07-22-2007, 03:13 PM Maybe they were a "test" sent from Peavey. I cant find the actual color anywhere. fenderhutz 07-22-2007, 03:15 PM Ahh, maybe it's knotty wood? mattsk42 07-22-2007, 08:52 PM Yeah, interesting, I'm subscribed! I liked my Grind, very nice bass for this price. Justyn 07-23-2007, 09:20 AM My fretless Cirrus 6 has become my main bass and I've been looking for a good fretted companion so I just pulled the trigger on one of these. MF is moving their distribution center so it most likely won't ship until Aug. 1st, but I'll have a full review up as soon as I can. J. jfv 07-29-2007, 02:32 PM I was in a local store looking at a Cirrus yesterday, but then I thought 1900 vs 250...hmmm :) I play primarily upright, I have a nice Brian Moore 4 string also, but I've lusted after a 6 for a while. So this was a perfect way to see if I can get into the extended range thing. I figure even if it needs a tuneup with the local luthier its a good deal. And if its a DOA pile I can return it. Also had my hands on a grind 5 string in the store and I was impressed, quite nice for what you pay for these things. jfv 07-30-2007, 09:38 PM Apparently the claim about not shipping til after 8/1 has changed, I ordered yesterday and got a ship confirmation today. It seems I will have to explain to my wife sooner than expected :) Dave 07-31-2007, 12:01 AM Whaaaat? Mine still is just being pack. I dont really like that they charged me when I ordered, but they still havent shipped the bass yet. jfv 07-31-2007, 12:15 AM Maybe it has something to do with which side of the country you are on, since I'm on the other end :) Justyn 07-31-2007, 08:50 AM Maybe it has something to do with which side of the country you are on, since I'm on the other end :) That could very well be. Mine's listed as being packed as well and I'm in VA. rodneyat 08-02-2007, 09:40 AM Anybody recieve theirs yet? I have a friend who wants to start playing and this would probaby be a good choice if it is a nice bass and plays well. Quadzilla 08-02-2007, 10:10 AM Every order from MF is delayed due to their recent warehouse move. I ordered cables and some other odd and ends (that were all in stock). It's been almost two weeks since that order and it's still listed as "being packed". I called them and they said everything is running about 2 weeks behind... So no need to worry, you will get your bass (eventually). Justyn 08-02-2007, 12:26 PM Anybody recieve theirs yet? I have a friend who wants to start playing and this would probaby be a good choice if it is a nice bass and plays well. I haven't received mine yet but I did play a 4-string version at the local GC yesterday and was very favorably impressed for this price point. I'd certainly recommend it over the Squier II P-Bass that was my first bass when I started out. Fit and finish were good and the hardware was certainly acceptable. The pickups are the obvious weak point but they were quiet and did the job and the host of aftermarket options makes it an easy upgrade down the road. Full review to follow once I actually get my 6. Cheers, J. jfv 08-03-2007, 11:46 AM It arrived yesterday afternoon. It is no different in wood from the regular retail Grind. In fact, from the box it seems that its just a refurb. There are some minor cosmetic imperfections that I could find, but nothing whatsoever of consequence. Yes, you can tell its an economy design at a number of points but its still a great instrument for the money. The action is so low that the E and B strings will buzz a bit but I plan to put TI Jazz on this and will have the luthier adjust the strings. The sound is just great, it doesnt quite match my Brian Moore i4B, but its great for passive, in fact on the G and C strings I like the tone better. Bottom line, this is truely a bargain, if you are looking for your an inexpensive entry into extended range I would hurry and snatch one up cuz they probably won't last long. You know the rule. jfv 08-03-2007, 05:46 PM Pics? You know the rule. I dont have the ability to take a picture right now, and as I said its unnecessary, google Peavy Grind, you will find their site, there is a picture of the 4,5, and 6 string grind on there, That's EXACTLY what it looks like :) Cheers, TheSuzie 08-03-2007, 06:31 PM What is the neck profile like on these 4 strings? Please compare to P and Jazz since I am familiar with those. I am currently bassless for the first time in decades 8( and need something. Thanks, S Wademeister63 08-04-2007, 12:46 AM Looks like the guild JS II from the Dallas Craigslist must have sold already ah well, I have nine 4 stringers already. So I ordered one of these Grind 6 stringers. Should be fun! AlienBlood 08-04-2007, 06:56 PM apparently I'm not the only one with the MF shipping blues? Anyway, after a week of waiting, I finally got mine last night. Like was said before, it looks exactly like the pics online, but mine has an added bonus of what looks like a mark from a black Sharpie on the side of the neck at the 5th fret, and an even bigger bonus in that you can't read the Peavey logo on the headstock from any sort of distance. =) Overall, it plays fairly well (still needs truss rod adjustment), sounds killer (I've just converted back to the sound of passive electronics), and looks....well....like the pictures show...like a Butcher Block. I dig it, especially for the price. =) Hishnika 08-08-2007, 09:23 PM I just ordered one on musiciansfriend.com after I chatted with some help guy on their site. The Butcher number is the same as the other grind bass, except it has a V. This means it's a refurbished model. an X means it's a blemished model. He said the refurbs are less of a gamble than the blem ones. That's the whole difference. No different wood no anything. for 200 bucks? i played this at the store and it sounds fantastic. I could actually tell if someone else was playing it while i was in the store, i loved the sound! I hope it wasn't just the amp that made it sound sweet :), but from comments here seems I got a bargain by getting one. Wademeister63 08-08-2007, 10:37 PM Got it today. I was out of town all day so all I've been able to do so far is get some pics for you guys. I like the flat body front on this bass. The undercut always looked funny to me, though probably just because it's not "the usual" shape. No battery covers, string through or topload with these bridge pieces. Nice headstock decal. The only thing I could possibly pick at would be the milky clear plastic fret markers on the edge of the fretboard. They relly do look cheap, but I like the design. If one should ever fall out I'll replace them all with pearl markers and it will all be top notch. The action and neck relief are right on the money from the box, will find out about the intonation after I get it home. Seems surprisingly comfortable for a 6'er (never owned one, played one for about 5 minutes total in my life). the grain match is pretty bad looking in some places, but the glue seams seem to be nice and tight, and the (oil?) finish is uniform and well done. Pix: So this was built by a chiimp? Impressive! I guess the other sticker says "don't throw it in the trash, sell as B stock"... http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v440/Wademeister/th_DSCN1001.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v440/Wademeister/DSCN1001.jpg)http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v440/Wademeister/th_DSCN1000.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v440/Wademeister/DSCN1000.jpg) Typical body pix in Bill's chair. The shape of the chair and the leather are perfect for holding a bass for pix :D. If I keep going at the rate I've been, Bill will be sitting in an "internet famous" chair. Maybe he'll be able to Ebay it for big bux one day. Naahhh... http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v440/Wademeister/th_DSCN996.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v440/Wademeister/DSCN996.jpg)http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v440/Wademeister/th_DSCN0995.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v440/Wademeister/DSCN0995.jpg)http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v440/Wademeister/th_DSCN0994.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v440/Wademeister/DSCN0994.jpg)http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v440/Wademeister/th_DSCN0993.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v440/Wademeister/DSCN0993.jpg)http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v440/Wademeister/th_DSCN0991.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v440/Wademeister/DSCN0991.jpg)http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v440/Wademeister/th_DSCN0989.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v440/Wademeister/DSCN0989.jpg)http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v440/Wademeister/th_DSCN0988.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v440/Wademeister/DSCN0988.jpg) So did I get my $249.99 worth? That's just crazy! I don't understand how they can still have some in stock at that price. 98dvl 08-09-2007, 11:40 AM Got it today. I was out of town all day so all I've been able to do so far is get some pics for you guys. ... So did I get my $249.99 worth? That's just crazy! I don't understand how they can still have some in stock at that price. How does it SOUND? rodneyat 08-09-2007, 12:47 PM I stopped by GC this week and played a 4 string and 5 string. Bang for the buck, I was hugely suprised. Even at their prices (about $350) it was a good deal. The Musicians Friend price is just out of this world. It is interesting that they are the same company though. Anyway, back to the sound, like most neck through basses. It had a nice smooth tone but still had nice low end. It seemed to be very quiet (as in no unwanted noise) but you can never tell in Guitar Center. Anyway, it had some good low end and nice highs. The neck was very thin and playable. Overall, a very nice bass for the money. Standalone 08-09-2007, 12:51 PM The 6'ers are gone, apparently... Said "This product has been discontinued" when I looked. EagleMoon 08-09-2007, 01:41 PM Just ordered the 4 string version of this. They say that it won't be shipping until the 18th. Now the wait.... I'm already climbing the walls! :hyper: Justyn 08-09-2007, 01:45 PM The 6'ers are gone, apparently... Said "This product has been discontinued" when I looked. Indeed....and I thought I'd bought the last one until a package arrived today that contained a bunch of drum hardware and no bass. Somebody in the warehouse got the order wrong. Ah well, no worries, I can use the dough. Ryan L. 08-14-2007, 01:29 AM Not surprised that they are getting sold out. That is a killer price on those things. When the thread was started, the 4, 5 and 6 string models were all available. I think the prices were $200, $225 and $250 (minus a penny each). I like the 6 stringer very well and am sorely tempted to pick up that 4 to go with it. Dave 08-19-2007, 09:14 AM They should have a 6er back in stock before too long...I decided I needed the money elsewhere and sent it back. rduckwor 08-20-2007, 09:50 AM If you're into alternate tunings, just be careful with your Grinds. This is the "E" machine head off mine. Looks identical to a Schaller M4, but they're $35 at allparts.com and this one costs $10.00 from Peavey. Well, I guess they have to cut costs somewhere. Bassslayer69 09-01-2007, 10:53 AM I just got off the phone with musicians friend, and apparently they are refurbished, so they are "B" stock or "butcher block" maybe they are made outta scrap wood like a butcher block? hahahahahahahahahahahahhaah! what a maroon. Now why in the name of crimeny would peavey do that anyway? idot talkbass lifers... Bigoo7e 09-01-2007, 12:07 PM LOL... I played a 4 string version of this bass at a local music store, it was used. The bass was very light and easy to play but the neck was very thin and was a lot different to me than my jazz bass. It was somewhat fast but it was a little too thin and narrow for my tastes, I would hate to see how the 5 and 6 string necks where, geez! :hmm: Peace, Dave 09-01-2007, 12:12 PM FWIW, the 6 string neck felt really weird to me. Very flat on the back and of what Id call normal width/thickness. But it felt like they just took a router to the edge of the neck and put a radius on it. Didnt feel very shaped to me at all. This of course is totally preference and opinon. YMMV. As far as the sound, acoustically it sounded pretty good, but I didnt have my amp with me in the day or two it was at my house so I couldnt plug it in. |
