Hi! I left a leather string in this bass for about a week back in '94. It left a line of brown marks in the finish. It's a diagonal line of small dots on the lower left side across from the p'up. I s'pose the oils leached into it. It wasn't very old at the time. It's never bothered me much, but I've been thinking of selling it and apparently it's an issue.
It's a '93 MusicMan Sting Ray - does anyone know what the finish would be? Nitro? Poly? On close inspection, it appears to be maybe all the way down thru the clear coat and onto the color... can't tell for sure. I don't want to do a refin, but if I can rub/buff it out, I may need to touch up the clear coat. If that's possible ...:confused:
Any thoughts or experience with these finishes? Thanx!

You might try a fine polishing compound/scratch remover, like GS27 or the Meguiar's "Scratch-X", both of which I have used to remove slight surface imperfections from finishes (both poly and nitro).

Your finish is likely poly...

Thanks Shawn, I appreciate your advice and will try the Meguiar's. Do you suggest a dual action polisher or elbow grease? I have a good friend that does excellent paint work - if I have to do a poly touch up, what is the actual chemical name that I will use?
