What kind of bit/jig do you folks use when routing for p-bass pickups (when not covered by pickguard)? a straight bit with the normal router guide bush is no go because of the clearance between cut edge of bush and the actual cutting edge of the bit. It works for most pickups but not p-bass because of their more complex shape.
I thought my best bet would be to use a template profile cutter that could follow a jig the exact size and shape of the rout, but i cant find one with a small enough diameter to get in all the corners etc.
So how do you guys do it?

Actually the guide bushing set up works fine for P-pick-ups, provided you use the correct bushing and bit combination, along with the correct template. So do not assume things won't work. Many luthiers including myself have done many P pick-ups with bushing and templates.

A Pattern bit for your router, and a good template will be the easiest way for you to accomplish it, but you need to be careful, and you need to make sure your bits are sharp.

great, thanks. exactly what size bit and bushing do you pesonally use? how much do you have to offset the jig larger than the pickup to get the rout the right size?

Generally, 1/2" spiral cut bit and a 5/8" bushing. The template is 1/16" larger on all sides, I then use a 1/4" spiral bit with a 3/8" collar to clean it up using the same template.

I use an overarm pin router to cut the pick up cavities on my P-Basses....(No guide bushings or pattern bits needed) This allows me to use a standard template, but after the initial routing using 1/2 in bits, I switch to 1/8 in bits and pins to produce a nice tight fit in the corners.
