So I've always wondered...

Did Mark use a fretless, or just the slide?
Also, how did he tune his bass?

I could be wrong, but I beleive he generally used a two string fretted bass that was tuned in fifths, though I think he used a three string bass on occasion.

Fifths?
Does that mean low D - A for example?
G - D
C - G
etc ?

The main bass in question was an old Premier scroll-horn bass with a p coil with one half of said pickup in each original pickup position.

iirc, he put a new nut to slightly widen the space between the two
strings at the nut end. an E and A string, again iirc.

Great player. He is missed.

In "Treat Her Right" they played "low guitar" which I think was a regular guitar run through an octave effect--that's what I remember from '87 or so when I saw them--dynamite show & band. personally, I never cared for Morphine.

My band played a street festival with them in the '90s. He was using the 2 string and 3 string through a stock old SVT with a few stomp boxes.
