Nasnederis 05-05-2008, 01:47 PM The whole Bedlam in Goliath album is a masterpiece on bass and drums.
Juan Alderete is from mexico, and if is mexican is good!!!, far better than Robert Trujillo.

Juan is from Novato, California. My brother went to High School with him.
phxlbrmpf 05-05-2008, 03:53 PM He's awesome but... can someone tell me how to pronounce his last name? I simply can't figure it out, I only know a few bits and pieces of Spanish.
Rano Bass 05-05-2008, 06:03 PM I like this bass line: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=isFPCMAcPZM

I went to see them a couple of weeks ago and they killed, one of the best shows I've been to in a long time.

Using the vast powers of my two years of Spanish in high school, I would say you pronounce it "al-duh-RET-tay."
BrandonBass 05-06-2008, 08:40 AM my favourite is 'scarified' doubt ill be able to play it anytime son tho :(
JAUQO III-X 05-09-2008, 11:36 PM Juan sent me this today
http://www.resonatemag.com/
Its a digital magazine. if you click on it, you can read or watch the video content in it. There are 3 video clips inside it with Juan playing.
walkinglines30 05-11-2008, 06:45 PM amazing! First time i've ever heard him speak! You say there are 3 clips of him playing? I only see two, one where he plays some licks on his bass and talks about an ampeg story and the other where he specifies his rig specs. I can't find the third one?
john turner 05-11-2008, 06:48 PM Anything with Racer X :bassist:
+1. when i was in college a band i was in used to play scarrified. what fun tune.
Clayman 05-13-2008, 11:02 AM My old high school band used to cover several Racer X tunes. The 3 people who came to our shows back then loved it :)
Juan was a huge influence on my playing and copying his stuff made me a MUCH better player and for that I thank him. I have a copy of his “Backstage Pass” instructional video still around the house somewhere. Good times.
walkinglines30 05-14-2008, 11:38 AM I've always wanted to see that video SO bad. I can't find it anywhere, is there anyway you could upload a clip of it on youtube:P
Clayman 05-15-2008, 01:02 PM Well, it's on VHS so I don't know of any way I could do that. Let me see if I can find it and I'll see if we can't work something out so you can see it.
thepathunderfoo 05-25-2008, 12:24 PM I thought I'd mention that on the Se Dice Bisonte, no Bufalo
record that Juan has a great solo. He just gets to wank away somewhere in the middle of a 10 min track....
Plus if you like Mars then you should at least check that record out.

CaptainKY 05-25-2008, 10:47 PM Number one on my top five influences - just ahead of Coltrane, Steve Harris, Miles, and Dimebag. So many different projects and in each one he has a bass voice that is uniquely his, yet seemlessly fits into the aims and goals of the group.
Plus he absolutely SLAYS live - caught him with TMV in Austin in April, and am looking forward to seeing them again at ACL. I feel he is the foundation of the whole group, and after that concert I feel completely affirmed in that belief. All the players are going completely mad onstage but the root of the groove is there, thanks in large part to Juan. Its all cool, then he just melts your face with some super sick fill or solo, then right back to the groove without missing a beat.
Listening to his more recent records have really helped me slow down my lines, and I feel like I've begun to strike a keen balance between groovin' and melody. His approaches to music have also encouraged me to be more open in my style and to diversify my listening and playing tastes.
To sum it up: simply superb
EDIT: Just watched the Resonate video and I officially mimed that whole interview before I saw it. What a parrot I am - but a psychic one lol.
Obligatory linkage
Some old-school down and dirty rocking for all y'all - Racer X style.
Really cool solo by Juan in the middle.

I litterally cream my pants everytime I hear Juan play out Roulette Dares on the Lowlands & Electric Ballroom gigs; simply stunning. Although I prefer this track live with Jon Theodore on the tubs, the way Juan plays this with Prigden is equally impressive, although for other reasons.
Also gotta say his performance on Cassandra Gemini is insane, I love playing that... so much fun.

quasiz_bassist 07-31-2008, 01:52 PM Everything off the newest album by Mars Volta is pretty good. He's just all around amazing. I wish I could afford that SVTVR with those two 8x10s! Anyone feeling charitable??

Ill save you the trouble. They have had issues with the reissue SVT. Buy the original.
Pridgen has almost ruined the mars volta for me. I miss theodore on the drums...

Yep, I prefer Jon Theodore, the band gelled so much better with him, and he's a much more musical drummer so to speak.
Prigden is impressive but I fear he's a bit of a one trick pony. I'd love him to prove me wrong & I'm prepared to allow him time to do so. I just fear that Omar's decision to bring in a drummer who constantly plays over the track, usually in different time sig's to the perticular piece, could well be a misstake. Juan is now the glue of this line-up, which prevents him from opening up like he used to alongside Jon.
