VIEW FULL LIVE VERSION : Who's Your Favorite
BassPrivateer 09-18-2007, 07:33 PM Whom do you like the best and why.
No real reason for this, just curious.
There's no way I'm getting all the bassists up there, so just pick one.
funkybassinator 09-18-2007, 07:35 PM why no bootsy??
fenderhutz 09-18-2007, 07:38 PM Nate Mendel
(les for originality sakes, truly an artist)
BassPrivateer 09-18-2007, 07:41 PM I can't get everyone on there. :rollno:
mulambo 09-18-2007, 07:42 PM Steve Harris. Becauce off all the "Iron Maiden" thing. The band, the concepts, its importance in the NWBHM; and his style, a school in modern rock bass playing.
erochelle77 09-18-2007, 07:45 PM Lemmy von Motorhead? That's a new one.
Captain Chaos 09-18-2007, 07:49 PM Lemmy von Motorhead? That's a new one.
I think in the ending credits of the movie airheads they refer to him as Lemmy von Motorhead.
PrimusNut 09-18-2007, 11:04 PM I picked Cliff. Why? I don't know why I like him so much. I know he's not the best... Maybe it has to do with his amazing solo's... or his ability to headbang like crazy and not miss a note. Or the fact that he just looks so damn cool.. Many reasons, but Cliff Burton is my all time favorite bassist.
Where's Geezer? Geddy? DeMaio? JPJ? That list is far too small to pick from, except for me... My favorite was actually on the list.
Jazzin' 09-18-2007, 11:05 PM M2
rfclef 09-18-2007, 11:29 PM Where's Floyd Pepper???
Steveł 09-18-2007, 11:53 PM Steve Harris. Becauce off all the "Iron Maiden" thing. The band, the concepts, its importance in the NWBHM; and his style, a school in modern rock bass playing.
Steve's #2 on my list, right behind John Entwistle, and just ahead of Geddy Lee. There may be better players out there, but these three guys are the best at playing music that I like to listen to.
skaliwag66 09-19-2007, 12:04 AM John entwistle
cause he was so cool
Sneckumhaw 09-19-2007, 12:27 AM Don't listen to the people that wonder why their favourite isn't on the list, but the godfather of classic rock bass (Jack) is pretty much needed for that list to be taken seriously.
Alan Vorse 09-19-2007, 09:34 AM I will not vote in the poll because neither Derek Smalls nor Jack Lemmon in "Some Like It Hot" are available choices.
A list without Chris Squire is no list at all!
Luke73 09-19-2007, 09:44 AM How on Earth can James Jamerson possibly be absent from such a list?
sensible68 09-19-2007, 09:44 AM being too young for jazz I went for the ox
mooooo!
funkybassplayer 09-19-2007, 09:47 AM out of this list i would have to say Woot, but really my fav at the moment would be between Brian Bromberg and the bassist from the Jazz Pistols (german instrumental trio)
Thunder_Fingers 09-19-2007, 10:13 AM Oh.. hard one..
I Voted Entwistle cause my style is closer to his, but realy, both Geddy and John are equal for me.
Sneckumhaw 09-19-2007, 02:33 PM The list looks a lot better now. I voted Jack, of course.
bassteban 09-19-2007, 02:45 PM ...Jack Lemmon in "Some Like It Hot"...
Not bad, but my fave is...
...me. :)
Edit- reason: Because when I play, I'm the one playing. Watching/hearing is great, but I wanna play. :)
funkybassplayer 09-19-2007, 03:05 PM am i crazy or did the list of Bassist grow? are names being added?
BassFTW 09-19-2007, 03:22 PM Les claypool for me: The reason I picked up the instrument, the reason I learned to play and the reason I continue to. He's my all time favorite bassist.
However, Wooten is a close second, but his solo stuff isn't that great and I like everything Les has done.
UncleBalsamic 09-19-2007, 03:27 PM John Entwistle for me, my favourite bassist.
Alan Vorse 09-19-2007, 03:31 PM being too young for jazz I went for the ox
mooooo!
You're never too young for jazz.
BigLoopDuke 09-19-2007, 03:39 PM Where's Hub?
cnltb 09-19-2007, 03:44 PM For me it'd be anthony jackson, steve swallow and tony levin in no particular order, ah...carles benavent should go gon there also and gary willis.
Winterpegbass 09-19-2007, 06:35 PM Marcus Miller
SpectorBass308 09-19-2007, 07:57 PM Nathan East
SpectorBass308 09-19-2007, 07:57 PM also, Duck Dunn and Jerry Scheff
JamesM 09-19-2007, 09:48 PM Jaco...because he's Jaco :bassist:

'nuff said
PrimusNut 09-19-2007, 11:37 PM Actually I'd say it's a tie between Cliff and Geezer for me. But I voted Cliff because he was on the list when I voted and Geezer wasn't.
Webtroll 09-20-2007, 04:22 PM Lots of great bassists on that list. I grew up listening to Rush and still enjoy listening to his playing (well on the older records, the new stuff doesn't move me). He, Phil Lynott and Chris Squire have been my favorite bassists for many years.
Eric618 09-20-2007, 04:30 PM I chose Geddy. Ability-wise, I think many on that list overpower him, but when including musicality, performance, writing style, voice, and cool-factor, I chose Geddy. :)
selfblessed 09-20-2007, 10:51 PM I would have gone Jaco but...JPJ was there for me first. :bassist:
bradjonesbass 09-21-2007, 06:34 AM Oteil
CraigG 09-21-2007, 06:45 AM From this list I would have to go with Jaco (although he is not my favorite bass player, but I do enjoy his work). I am not familiar with quite a few of the others so I can't pick from the. But I do have to credit Jaco for being a pioneer and innovator. There are many great bass players out there - and many of them are doing the same thing as each other (or some version of the same thing). Jaco was quite unique.
davetakis 09-21-2007, 12:39 PM of the ones you listed, john entwistle.
my all time fav is MR RICK PRICE
steveboyjunior 09-21-2007, 05:33 PM Chris Squire!!:bassist:
Mojo-Man 09-21-2007, 08:32 PM
I can't name just one.
SIR PAUL
JAMERSON
JACO
CHUCK RAINY
PINO PALLADINO
LEE SKLAR
WILL LEE
Just to name a few.
Steal from everybody.
phat daddy 09-21-2007, 08:38 PM +1 on Chuck Rainey. Also Robert Trujillo, Trevor Dunn, and Joe Gittleman. All these guys have influenced me heavily on different sides of the styllistic spectrum. And their sounds are completely imaculate for what they do.
Uncle Ernie 09-21-2007, 08:50 PM JPJ
He rocks!
BassPrivateer 09-22-2007, 06:44 AM I completely forgot about Rob. I feel so ashamed.
Joenok 09-26-2007, 09:49 AM victah!
3fingerdemon 09-26-2007, 11:22 AM ALEX WEBSTER!!!!!!!
jazzin-j 09-26-2007, 07:11 PM from the list it was wooten but off the list its tony kanal:hiding: i dunt kno what people think of him on here so... it would be cool to hear peoples opinions on him. but if it is negative ya dunt hav to be as harsh as possible, get me?
BigSwami 09-27-2007, 07:41 AM Picking Jamerson.
I imagine that I'm a producer, and I'm trying to come up with the perfect bass player for a track. If I needed to choose a player who would bring a unique sound and dominate the track, it would be someone like Flea. But if I wanted to choose a player who always knew the right thing to do to show the track and all of its arrangement in the best possible light, it would be someone like Jamerson. He just had a very good feel for knowing what to add to a song that made the singer, the drummer, the strings, etc. sound better. There wasn't a song he played on that wasn't made better by the addition of his playing. And I think John Paul Jones was capable of similar things, too. He had fun with some unique sounds on some songs, but for the most part his playing is very tasteful and steady.
