Normal income, gig money, a combination, or some other way?

The majority of it comes from gig money,if it's not already allocated to bills.

I rarely buy new gear these days, I'm too selective and buy it then, and buy it once. The money used thereafter is primarily for upkeep / maintenance / repair.

I gig often (twice a week) , but not enough to support heavy g.a.s. :smug:

Maybe when the kids are grown.

Most of any new gear I get is usually first from selling old gear. I've been thinning the herd, due to not wanting to keep instruments around that I wouldn't take to a show. So, I have a revolving door, so to speak, of instruments that I may like and play for a while and then sell because they just don't stand up.

Any other money used for gear comes from the shows/gigs I do. Doing theatre work, it's easy to see how much money you'll get from a show up front, so you know what you can and can't do with it.

I eliminate most of my non-essential expenditures, save up and apply my normal income, side job and gig money to buying mostly high-quality used vintage gear, and pass on the items that aren't priced way below market value.

I don't have too many expenses, so saving up generally. Or gear turnover.

Half my gig money goes in a jar... (rest goes on petrol and a contribution to keeping my wife happy). When the jar is nice and full I can buy what I like without worrying about it.

Of course I currenty "owe" the jar $500... ;-)

Gig's Gig's Gig's and did I mention Gig's?? Actually my gigs barely keep up with my equipment spending even though I gig at least 3 weekends a month. You can tell by my credit card balance! I also trade or sell equipment I haven't used in a while to offset the cost. I constantly suffer from G.A.S. ... you other G.A.S people know what I'm talking about! :-)

everything up until 2006 i've gotten by saving up.
last year i bought a GK full stack. paid for that by gear turnover and a GC credit card with 15 months of no interest or payments.

i just recently sold my fender deluxe p and used that money and a sam ash credit card to buy a warwick rock bass. i wasn't really feeling the rock bass after about 20 times playing it.. so i returned it for full store credit and ended up buying a Mike Dirnt Sig. P-Bass.

I do odd PC jobs for some law firms and realtors at about 60 bucks an hour, but it's only like 5-6 hours of work per month. I have a full time job as well, but that's my "me" money.
