Hey everyone, I'm looking for a mentor, who lives in the Southern New Jersey/Philadelphia area. I want to focus mostly on music theory and jazz. I have a good understanding of music, but I need someone to help me take it to the next level. I've never had any type of instruction from an actual bass player. The only time that I took lessons was from Guitarists w/ a wide range of knowledge. If you can help me out, or know someone that can, please PM me and let me know. Thanks a bunch.

There are a few guys in the Philly area who are wonderful teachers. They all teach at the University of the Arts. I don't have their numbers anymore, but a google search might help. They are all going to be alot more expensive than the typical 20 y/o at the GC, but the wealth of knowledge is increadible.

My teacher was Kevin McConnell. He teaches both upright and electric. He is more of a Scott LaFaro type player. Very musical and very interested in the minute details of how to become more musical.

Another great one is Craig Thomas. He plays with Jimmy Bruno alot, and has an insane comand of fast bebop tempos. He can swing hard, and has a huge knowledge of all styles, but really shines in bebop. He played with Philly Joe Jones and alot of top guys.

Gerald Veasley is in the area. Great 6 string bassist. He is more into contemporary styles. R&B, smooth jazz, funk, etc. Great person. Just a joy to be around.

Steve Beskarone (I don't know if I spelled that right) is another great electric teacher. I don't have much expierience with him, but he has always impressed me.

Mica Jones is a younger guy. I don't know if he's still around. I'm sure many touring guys are trying to pick him up.
