Collage (From the French: coller, to stick) is regarded as a work of visual arts made from an assemblage of different forms, thus creating a new whole.

REM makes me want to kick puppies. I like puppies.

It depends on the album. I've always really liked R.E.M. but I haven't bought any of the albums since Bill Berry left. "Automatic For the People" is the album that puts me in the mood you described.

"Life's Rich Pageant" makes me nostalgic and "Out of Time" makes me think of past girlfriends and love lost.

"Document" makes me think of politics, both past and present.

I could go on for every album. Which album(s) do you have MM?

when I think about REM I think about "automatic for the people"
--Awesome album. They did make a few good tunes on other albums, but aftp does it for me.

Ugh. Nothing good. I hate to sound so negative, but I really don't care for their music at all. I'd have to say "revulsion".

REM best of 1988-2003 :bassist:

If you get a chance, check out the other Greatest Hits collection, "And I Feel Fine . . .The Best Of The IRS Years". It covers their career from 1982-1987 when my favorite albums from them were released. You may feel differently, but while I like the later albums (Green-Reveal) that early stuff was their best work IMO.

Some songs:

Radio Free Europe (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KA57Pafq_NU&mode=related&search=)
So Central Rain (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9rLlVWrvO-Q)

Disappointment.

Here is a band that has a few really good pop/rock songs and some good ideas, but they don't really follow through to a fulfilling finish. Songs like Orange Crush, Stand and End of the World are great kernels of ideas, but feel kind of unfinished or not completely thought out. The music is way better than the lyrics.

Thier albums suffer from to much filler, too little killer. The Police suffered from the same lack of having an albums worth of great material - only they had a killer singer and way better players.

I like Green and Epoymous

"Jesus H Christ can't you write a song in a friggin MAJOR KEY??"
"Is the track on repeat? Every damn song sounds the same!"
"Who told this clown that he can sing?"

My band covers "The One I Love" and I sing it. I like that song, it's incredibly easy to cover, and it goes over great.

+1 nausea, just kidding.

"Shiny happy people" reminds of the scene in the michael moore movie F 911 where the ties between the Bush family and the Saudi royal family are outlined.

Everybody hurts - I think they've captured the sound to go with the feeling

I don't know all they're songs, but on a song by song basis they're good at capturing sublime feelings to match the mood. Although 'Losing My Religion' and 'End of the World' seem a little too happy under the surface. Maybe they're showing their underlying indifference or something.

Bass isn't that easy! I keep listening to the track and it's like "gah, I missed this bit, argh, that bit too". Easier on bass than a lot of other R.E.M. songs though...

I am a huge fan of everything up through Green... although revisiting later stuff, I enjoy it as well.

Mike Mills has a lot to offer in terms of note choice and placement... he's got a great sense of melody & harmony.

I've seen them live about a dozen times

I've been singing that song in cover bands for quite some time, and when I first learned it, it took me a LOT of practice to get the bass and vocals working together, particularly during the "Occupy my time" where the bass kind of gallops up while the vocals sing a completely different rhythm. Fun challenge. :)

I was a huge REM fan, from the "Murmur" album through the "Monster" album, and I probably saw them at least 5 times in concert. They were a fun band to follow -- I remember debating with my friends about what those obtuse lyrics actually meant, noticing the differences from one album to the next, and watching Stipe gradually change from a mumbling introvert into a new kind of rock star.

I give REM a lot of the credit for creating the cornerstone of what we now call "alternative rock". But I admit that I practically NEVER listen to them anymore. I know the old stuff too well, and the new stuff seems dull. Back then, they were pretty much the only interesting game in town. But nowadays there are so many more interesting choices, and REM's music seems pretty thin in comparison.

Well, it is a word I refrained from using before...but yeah. I pretty much hate their music. Yep, nausea works too, but mostly yeah; hate 'em. Sorry dude. We all have opinions, and it seems like not too many musicians really like their music.

Difficult to play?? Really? Sheesh. I guess that Jeff Berlin guy's stuff must be IMPOSSIBLE to play then, if REM is "difficult".

Everybody hurts? Only when forced to listen to that tune. Really. Just may qualify as most annoying song ever.

Have you actually listened to the song? :/

No Shiny Happy People wins as the most annoying song ever.

And interesting to note that the band actually HATES that song and it never appears in model singles collections :P
Someone I used to work with always used to ask me to put R.E.M. on, then he'd get confused and say I put crap songs on whenever I put anything but the singles (yes, he used to listen to Shiny Happy a lot -_-;;) on... I HATE those types of R.E.M. fans..........

+1 , love rem , mike mills is a very good bass player , not flashy and technical but good strong melodic bass lines which imo is what bass playing is all about , I think he has a really nice tone as well , full and warm

Early REM....I really dug "Murmur"

After that, it was a song here & there, but mostly I couldn't stand them. The band was pretty cool, but Stipes really got on my nerves.

"Shiny Happy People" made me wanna feed kittens to puppies......and I like kitties !!! :D

I'm glad a band like R.E.M. exists... it's fantastic chill out music... and I dunno... just really like the jangly, bass-driven-melodic aspect of it... they do it right for me...

I'm a big fan of Automatic for the People and Monster was a pretty brave album to make in my opinion. "Automatic" makes me want to chill out and do nothing else but listen to it. I was able to stomach "New Adventures in Hi Fi" and "Up" okay but after that they lost me completely.

P.S.: Everybody Hurts is in D major, they can make songs in major keys. :p

"Shiny Happy People" actually gives me goosebumps during the transitions between the string and the "normal" parts but overall I don't like Out of Time all that much.

I'm actually glad to see REM is hated by so many. Sure that makes me a bad person, but my god... if I ever have to watch Michael Stipe dance to one of their songs again, I will take a bottle of mace and spray it in my eyes to make the pain go away.

So maybe rage would be the emotion REM's stirs within.

I just hate the music, and every clip I've seen of them, Michael Stipe dances like he's having a seizure, it's one of the most annoying things I've ever heard/seen at the same time.

This post is probably the closest to my feelings. Really liked'em through Lifes Rich Pageant. Murmur and Chronic Town, in particular, stir up wistful feelings about college. I saw them live on the Reckoning Tour and thought they were superb.

Then they started to lose me. However, I really enjoy Adventures in Hi-Fi, the last album with Bill Berry. I think it's an interesting departure.

Also, despite the tons of hate people direct at Stipe, I have to say this for him: Right as REM was getting huge, he produced a 5-song demo for some friends of mine from Jacksonville. They had nothing but good things to say. He invited them to the video shoot for Losing My Religion (they couldn't make it), and waived the fee he was supposed to get for producing them.

Hmmm. Whining. I think you hit the nail on the head. Yes, that is undoubtedly why I hate them the most; the whining. I hate whining. I think REM opened the door for "Whiney Bands". If you must sing, do NOT whine.
