Which one do you use and why? I personally use the bounce buti t seems that the only way you could effectively double and triple thumb is by going "through" the string.

I use the bounce for mutes, and through for pretty much everything else. It just feels right .

I bounce when I do fast slap line and I'm going through when I double thumb or when I think big fat slap tone is better.

I bounce. Its just more fun. :)

By "Bounce" I assume you mean the older style of thumbing directly down onto the string quickly, where by "Through" you mean thumbing more across the string and coming to rest on the next higher string.

For me it would have to be bounce. I have never truly gotten the hang of through slapping, first of all, while I have recently gotten the hang of bounce slapping. Yes, through slapping can be faster, but bounce slapping, to me, is far easier to control at speed. I pride myself on being able to thum-hammer-pluck Wooten style, albeit at half the speed Wooten can and only on the G. That's with bounce slapping; I'm pretty sure Wooten does it through, and therein lies my limitation.

However, through slapping has always felt like less of a wrist movement and more of a forearm movement to me. Forearm movements are stronger than wrist, but bigger and slower, and I have never had the same speed trying to through-thumb a lick than bouncing it, because in trying to speed up I am also trying to constrict my forearm movements so that my thumb doesn't end up too far away, and also so that it moves in the correct plane. Constrict muscles and you end up slowing yourself down.

I can't really vote on this poll since I use both. Both have different tones and applications. I personally use the bounce technique as my default slap technique for most improvising using slap but I will often use a combination of bounce and through in order to incorprate the double thumb technique. When I teach people to slap I always start with the bounce appraoch.

yeah i also use both, i tend to go through the string and stop on the next string when doing octaves, i just find it much easier like that, and go through the string when slapping higher up the kneck, but bouncing off the string is pretty much what i mainly do, its fun, and feels good todo

umm i think big old bounce sounds better for me, but through thumbing definately for complex lines, some miller and all wooten, although i can get away with bounce for flea pretty easily, adam nitti is through, things like that.

I first learned from the Louis Johnson videotape so "bounce" is most of what I do. I'm slowly picking up the "through" technique. Larry Graham who pioneered slapping uses the "through" technique so I guess it came first. I'm not really interested in "double thumbing" at this point.

Used to always bounce, but I've been working a little on double-thumbing that need to go thru so I'm closer to 50/50 now.

going through the string is older than bouncing off, larry graham pretty much invented slap pop, and he always goes through the string, i think bouncing off the string came a little later from the likes of louis johnson

Old school slap bounce all the way! I'm not into the double thumb thing.

Although for me generally speaking bouncing is more fun and most practical, if I'm doin straight quarter's on a particular part, I'll go thru. If you were to bounce on quarter's or eight's it would be harder [for me] to keep my aim straight.:hyper:
