VIEW FULL LIVE VERSION : What one song do you really want to cover?
mnolansoc 10-11-2007, 03:44 PM This is for members of bands that do original music, obviously, but what one song do you feel you must cover at some point in your music career?
Mine is:
Roxy Music "In Every Dream Home A Heartache"
I have conversations based off this question with other musicians I know, so I wanted to see what TBers thought.
stedtale 10-11-2007, 03:48 PM Rio - Duran Duran
I'd do it with more banjoistic sensationalism
Qvist 10-11-2007, 03:51 PM Orion - Metallica, fantastic piece of metal harmony.
bassjus 10-11-2007, 03:55 PM Peaches in Regalia by Zappa. I've always thought it would be so cool.
Ron Plichta 10-11-2007, 03:56 PM YYZ
skaliwag66 10-12-2007, 04:22 AM The Wyld "Fly by Nighter"
Justin V 10-12-2007, 04:27 AM So many to choose from....
It would be really cool to pull off "Dog Problems" by the Format. If for no other reason than to have a tuba on stage.
Baryonyx 10-12-2007, 04:36 AM Either "The Boy In The Bubble" or "Diamonds on the soles of her shoes" by Paul Simon. Or Puss 'N' Boots by Adam Ant!"
jomahu 10-12-2007, 05:26 AM either 'gene machine' or 'i against i' by bad brains. just because we're weird chicks and we already freak people out.
I'd dig Budgie - Parents but I dont think my guitarist or drummer could handle a 10 minutes song without screwing up too much after awhile...
Kalyptic 10-12-2007, 06:13 AM I'd like to cover, "flight of the bumblebees" and have a triangle solo!
fullrangebass 10-12-2007, 06:40 AM "Missing you" by Ark. Covers a lot of ground as well as having a soft spot for the lyrics of the song. Second choice is "Things ain't like they used to be" by Niacin
Rick_no7 10-12-2007, 06:48 AM "My Tortured Soul" by Probot
or
"The Ocean" by Led Zeppelin
It just seems like both songs the entire band is having fun in their parts, the sort of parts musicians wish they could do all the time.
threshar 10-12-2007, 07:26 AM Once we get a real horn section for the band, I shall demand we play Echinda's Arf (of you) by Frank Zappa. I just love that song sooo much and I don't know why. It just works for me. The bass line is somewhat tricky too.
One tune we've just started learning is rhythm & business by tower of power. Love that song too, fun bass line. Its been fun decoding and transcribing. (Damn you Rocco and your ghost notes that "blend in" to everything else!). I think I've got the hardest part on that tune. Originally I wanted to do what is hip, but decided I liked this song better. (Its much harder to play)
Come to Me or Talk to Me both by Bonnie Raitt
sarcastro83 10-12-2007, 08:05 AM Come Undone - Duran Duran (punk style)
Love is All Around - The Troggs (industrial metal style)
and a straight ahead snarlier version of Sister Christian...
NIGHT-FREAKING-RANGER
StanFan 10-12-2007, 10:55 AM I'd want to cover Faith No More's "Malpractice". The song would have worked well with my old band.
fish slapper 10-12-2007, 11:01 AM Steely Dan, "Any Major Dude"
I had a band once that had the chops to get through it in rehearsals but never made it to a gig.
Infernal Affair 10-12-2007, 11:28 AM "Only You" by Yazoo. I really like the Flying Pickets version.
funkysurfer 10-12-2007, 03:34 PM "Green Eyed Lady" by Sugarloaf.
gre107 10-12-2007, 03:43 PM Slam the Clown by UZEB... man that smokes!
mnolansoc 10-12-2007, 04:02 PM Thanks for all the posts. I'm going to have to check all these songs out. I probably only know 30-40% of them.
prattguy 10-12-2007, 04:23 PM The same song i want to have played over and over again at my funeral.....LISTEN TO THE MUSIC by THE DOOBIE BROTHERS, but i would be too much of a pain in the butt to the drummer in terms of nailing down that kick drum tightness that gives the song the sheer power that makes it so contagious.
Bass Junkie 10-12-2007, 06:05 PM i'm ashamed....
Hotel California - The Eagles
i'm sorry! :bawl:
pigpen02 10-12-2007, 06:12 PM Our House by Madness :)
gweimer 10-12-2007, 06:35 PM "Green Eyed Lady" by Sugarloaf.
I played it. After 2 minutes, it becomes the most boring and annoying song you'll ever do. It sounds cool, but it's a horrible song to play.
I keep telling myself that I'm going to find a band someday that I can justify doing "Lark's Tongue In Aspic, Pt. 2" with.
I'm probably more likely to find something to do "Are You Ready?" by PG&E
joeinsprings 10-12-2007, 06:49 PM Thick as a Brick-Jethro Tull
coolrunner989 10-12-2007, 06:57 PM ANYTHING by Tool
Especially sober ad the Pot - awesome songs that would really come off well with the crowd.
TrevorOfDoom 10-12-2007, 07:07 PM "No Quarter" by Led Zeppelin
but Tool already did that, so... my current band is planning on working up "While My Guitar Gently Weeps"
seanm 10-12-2007, 07:22 PM This is for members of bands that do original music, obviously, but what one song do you feel you must cover at some point in your music career?
 Well, I am going to post anyway, even though I only play in cover bands. So there!
"Before They Make Me Run", as covered by Supersuckers with Steve Earle on vocals. Originally a Rolling Stones song sung really really badly by Keith Richards. Not a hard song but I really like it.
And if I am ever in a good country band I would love to do "The Highwayman".
mutedeity 10-12-2007, 07:28 PM I wouldn't mind doing a cover of Orion myself, but play it on fretless. I don't really have the patience to sit down and figure out the solo though. If I came across the score for it I might have a go. Not that I am a huge Metallica fan but I think it would be cool to hear it played on fretless.
El-Bob 10-12-2007, 07:30 PM i really want to cover transgression by fear factory, but my lead guitarist hates it
Audiophage 10-12-2007, 09:37 PM i'm ashamed....
Hotel California - The Eagles
i'm sorry! :bawl:
I heard a pretty decent reggae cover of that recently.
I've always wanted to do something with Outkasts' "Hey Ya".
