Not huge on the production, but the words and the delivery is INTENSE. TheBigO 10-12-2007, 05:06 PM Off the top of my head? 1. A Tribe Called Quest - Midnight Marauders 2. The Roots - Tipping Point or Illadelph Halflife 3. DJ Shadow - Entroducing 4. Blackalicious - Blazing Arrow 5. New Kingdom - Paradise Don't Come Cheap That's my five at this moment, but I could easily rattle off 200 hip-hop albums that I love. morf 10-12-2007, 05:20 PM Man you see, now I forgot DJ Shadow, Blackalicious and A Tribe Called Quest -_- morf 10-12-2007, 05:21 PM man, I have to agree on Immortal Technique. Revolutionary vols. 1 & 2 are great. Not huge on the production, but the words and the delivery is INTENSE. Yep, love those two volumes as well. For French hiphop if anyone's interested: Southern hiphop: IAM - L'école du micro d'argent, (check solo albums of the guys from IAM, namely Freeman - Le Palais De Justice, Akhenaton - Meteque et Mat is really worth a listen, and Shurik'n - Ou Je vis as well), La Fonky Family - Si Dieu Veut, 3eme Oeil - Avec le coeur ou rien Northern hiphop: NTM - Supreme NTM La Rumeur - L'ombre sous la mesure Sheryo - Ghetto Trip La Cliqua - Concu Pour Durer morf 10-12-2007, 05:36 PM anybody else see rock the bells this summer? amazing show. i caught the first day in nyc...wu tang, blackstar, public enemy, cypress hill, pharoah monch, jedi mind trix, immortal technique(harlem streets was amazing), and the roots. What a lineup! That's the kind of stuff that makes me regret living in the US :bawl: gkbass13 10-12-2007, 05:47 PM did i mention that redman came out during the wutang set and did a few blackout songs with method, rhazel and supernatural mc'd it and put ona show themselves, and oh yeah...rage against the machine headlined!!!!!! gkbass13 10-12-2007, 05:49 PM any of del's stuff is worht mentioning as well as heiroglyphics full circle...amazing album. enough just mentioning discs though, i want to see top 5 lists!!! my only change in mine might be putting the gza's liquid swords on instead of the fugees-the score. morf 10-12-2007, 06:57 PM Top 5s are so hard though... I forgot Mos Def in my list... mutedeity 10-12-2007, 07:16 PM Public Enemy - Fear of A Black Planet The Lost Poets - Holy Terror Material - Intonarumori Dr. Ocatagon - Dr Octagoncologist Disposable Heros of Hiphoprisy - Hipocracy Is The Greatest Luxury (with my buddy and current drummer Simone White) msquared 10-12-2007, 08:01 PM Ready To Die Midnight Marauders so many from The Roots Digable Planets - Reachin' Snoop - Doggystyle I have to give special mention to MC Frontalot (http://frontalot.com/index.php/) too. Matt Till 10-12-2007, 08:15 PM I'm not huge on hip hop, I'm just getting into it fairly recently, so here goes: Faust vs. Dalek - derbe respect, alder Cannibal Ox - Cold Vein Edan - Beauty and the Beat Beastie Boys - Ill Communication The Roots - Do You Want More?!?!?!?! Wu Tang Clan - 36 Chamber Sorry for 6, it was a toss up between the Roots and Wu Tang. msquared 10-12-2007, 08:35 PM Beastie Boys - Ill Communication That would be my #6. :) gkbass13 10-12-2007, 08:44 PM mos def black on both sides was a great album as well but i cant put it that high on my list...im surprised jay-z hasnt made any appearances yet....resonable doubt, hard knock life volume 2 and the black album are all great....no bustah rhymes love either:-P keep it up gentlemen, so far it is a delivering thread! msquared 10-12-2007, 09:14 PM I hate Busta. But the only reason I didn't mention Jay-Z is that you already did. :) Adam Barkley 10-12-2007, 10:55 PM Lately I've really been digging Sage Francis, Aesop Rock and Brother Ali. Others who have mostly quality albums: Madvillain, Atmosphere, J5, and Dalek. I only have "No Need For Alarm" by Del and I don't really care for it. If he wasn't rapping about "wack mcs" this album wouldn't have any topic. He is good on the Heiro stuff, but that is probably the best rap group on the planet. Bassist4Life 10-12-2007, 11:34 PM I love all of these recordings. I guess they're kinda' old school, but that's what I like. They're not in any order. Favorites: A Tribe Called Quest - Low End Theory Ice Cube - Death Certificate Beastie Boys - Check Your Head & Ill Communication (tie) Public Enemy - Fear of a Black Planet NWA - Straight Outta Compton Honorable Mention: Cypress Hill - Cypress Hill Geto Boys - We Can't Be Stopped Scarface - Mr. Scarface Is Back Black Sheep - A Wolf In Sheep's Clothing Boogie Down Productions - Sex and Violence Did anyone see Tribe perform on the Hip Hop Honors last Monday? Great stuff. Joe KeithBMI 10-12-2007, 11:48 PM Cypress Hill - Black Sunday (or Cypress Hill) Funkdoobiest - Which Doobie U B? (Just found these guys) Beastie Boys - Ill Communication I've been listening to a lot of "one hit wonders" such as Onyx - Slam and House of Pain - Jump Around. steamthief 10-13-2007, 02:59 AM PE - Fear of a Black Planet Dr. Dre - 2001 Ice Cube - Amerikkka's Most Wanted Jay Z - Volume 2: Hard Knock Life Can't decide the fifth, so I'll list three more: De La Soul - Three Feet High and Rising Erik B. & Rakim - Paid in Full Wyclef Jean - The Carnival Yngwie 4String 10-13-2007, 03:45 AM ICP gkbass13 10-13-2007, 04:05 AM get that ICP crap out of here. glad to see rakim and erik b mentioned. under construction from missy elliot is a sick album. im really digging pharoah monches new disc too. morf 10-13-2007, 07:31 AM ICP Why dont you silently stay away from the thread? :smug: Matt Till 10-13-2007, 12:28 PM Awww no love for the juggalo? ;) Bassist4Life 10-13-2007, 12:29 PM I know I already exceeded my limit of 5, but... Crazy stuff, but I really like it. Beastie Boys - Ill Communication If you liked Ill Communication, I'd recommend Paul's Boutique. Great Production from the Dust Brothers and my favorite Beastie Boys album. Hello Nasty and To The 5 Buroughs have some great tracks as well. morf 10-13-2007, 01:11 PM Lets not forget Root Down :) TheBigO 10-13-2007, 01:20 PM Glad to see Eric B & Rakim and De La get mentioned. I think I'll just add to this thread as I listen to stuff. Some records from this morning: Lauryn Hill - The Miseducation of Lauren Hill Definitely a commercial record, but warm production, catchy hooks, old school and modern beats, and Hill at her best, on the mic and vocally. Handsome Boys Modeling School - White People Great record, with guests galore: Mike Patton, De La Soul, RZA, Del, Cedric Bixler-Zavala, Chino Moreno, Q-Bert, Cat Power and more that I'm forgetting. Good stuff, if a little too wide ranging to really be cohesive. Some non-starters, but the tracks I like, I really like. Plus it has an intro from Father Guido Sarducci so it gets awesome points for that. The Streets - Original Pirate Material and A Grand Don't Come For Free More spoken word over garage beats than hip-hop in a true sense, but I dig it. Matt Till 10-13-2007, 03:32 PM If you liked Ill Communication, I'd recommend Paul's Boutique. Great Production from the Dust Brothers and my favorite Beastie Boys album. Hello Nasty and To The 5 Buroughs have some great tracks as well. I love Paul's Boutique and Check Your Head, that era of Beasties is my favorite, but they certainly won't dominate my top 5. I just love pretty much every track off Ill Communication: Sabotage is a little old at this point, but that's my fault, it use to be the only song I listened to by the Beastie Boys, so I played it to death. So it's a good song, I just killed it. nonohmic 10-13-2007, 05:11 PM You need to check Hilltop Hoods - The Calling. Aussie hip-hop duo from Adelaide. Once you get over the accent it's seriously the sickest hip-hop album I've heard. Wicked stuff. paintandsk8 10-13-2007, 05:50 PM The Streets - Original Pirate Material and A Grand Don't Come For Free More spoken word over garage beats than hip-hop in a true sense, but I dig it. A Grand Don't Come for Free is a wonderful album, takes you through the whole range of emotions two or three times before it's over. It's definitely one of those albums you have to listen to all at once though. I dunno if I can single out albums, but gotta give some love to: Jay-Z Common Kanye West The Beastie Boys The Gorillaz alfredpunkjazz 10-13-2007, 06:55 PM Guys, this thread it's really giving me something. I haven't been into hip hop really, but I'm taking note of your lists. I can say that "The miseducation of Lauryn Hill" it's a CD that gets a lot of airplay in my itunes. mutedeity 10-13-2007, 06:58 PM ICP Does anyone want to chime in and tell 4StringFury all about how Insane Clown Posses aren't hiphop, just like he tells everyone how this band and that band don't fit into certain other genres? That would be good for a laugh. Matt Till 10-14-2007, 12:04 PM Does anyone want to chime in and tell 4StringFury all about how Insane Clown Posses aren't hiphop, just like he tells everyone how this band and that band don't fit into certain other genres? That would be good for a laugh. I loled. Alright, I'll give it a shot: Uhm, ICP isn't hip hop because you can buy their shirts at Hot Topic. So their more Alt-Hop. Also, to quote the great Snoop Dogg, "Some call it rap, some call it hip hop, I call it rip rop." gkbass13 10-14-2007, 05:23 PM a lot of stuff from dead prez and black sheep as well, i only have songs from them though so i dont know entire albums. rhazels first solo disc is great too with "all i know". my next surprise is not seeing slick rick mentioned, the art of story telling tracks are all classic. also not much 2pac love. i foudn him to be talented lyrically but i couldnt stand the beats on most of his songs and never really cared for albums as a whole, in my eyes biggie was on a whole different level than he was. darkfinger 10-14-2007, 05:33 PM In no particular order: 1. Beastie Boys- Ill Communication (I know it`s been mentioned a hundred times already...but still) 2. Dr. Dre- Chronic 2001 3. The Roots- Phrenology 4. Jurrassic Five- Power In Numbers 5. Pocket Dwellers- PD-Atrics Check `em out! casualmadness 10-14-2007, 05:37 PM Beastie Boys: Paul's Boutique " ": Ill Communications Outkast: Aquemini Dr. Dre: The Chronic Judgment Night: Soundtrack Don't know if #5 would be considered hip hop though since it's a metal/hip hop mix. BigLoopDuke 10-14-2007, 06:20 PM 1. Ghostface Killah - Fishscale 2. Beastie Boys - Check Your Head 3. Quasimoto - The Further Adventures of Lord Quas 4. J Dilla - Donuts 5. MF Doom's King Geedorah - Take Me to Your Leader I'd throw in MF Doom's Vaudeville Villian, Dr Dre's Chronic, Ghostface Killah's More Fish (Fishscale and More Fish should have been a double album), Cypress Hill's III: Temple of Boom and The Roots Come Alive! as close runner's up. mutedeity 10-15-2007, 02:26 AM a lot of stuff from dead prez and black sheep as well, i only have songs from them though so i dont know entire albums. rhazels first solo disc is great too with "all i know". Yeah Dead Prez, I forgot about them. Melvin Gibbs was involved with them I believe. As for Eminem, who cares once you have heard Kool Keith, is how I see it. Oh and anyone dig Booyah Tribe? phippsyg 10-15-2007, 02:46 AM Too hard to make a top 5. I'll just take bits of everyones. Has anyone heard the new album by Galactic. The track with Chali2na from Jurrasic 5 is on constant rotation for me. If you don't know bout it it's Galactic with a whole heap of guest mc's, my favourite album at the moment. I'll add one that no-one else has yet . The Herd-The sun never sets. My fave hip hop album. I'll add Feedback by J5 as well. Good thread to make you go and dig up some old (and new) tunes. rakirksey 10-15-2007, 01:49 PM Seems all my favorites have already been listed, but I'll add a couple more ... Kool Keith -- Black Elvis in Outer Space Pharoahe Monch - Internal Affairs J-Live - Anything really ... Redman - Dare Iz a Darkside heroincredible 10-17-2007, 04:01 PM I don't really listen to much hip-hop, but I'd have to say my favourite album would have to be K'naan's the Dusty Foot Philosopher. Varied, catchy, and oh so amazing live. vision 10-17-2007, 04:18 PM East Coast: 1. NAS - Illmatic 2. Notorious BIG - Ready to Die 3. Jay-Z - The Blueprint 4. Raekwon - Only Built 4 Cuban Linx 5.
