Can anyone tell me how many songs (and hopefully albums) that the late great James Jamerson played on?

Also, does anyone know of any box sets where I would be able to get the majority of his recordings?

Hitsville USA, the cd box set will get you a whole bunch of Motown songs that he played on.

Not sure about his actual discography. I never tried to look it up. Back in the Motown days none of the backing musicians got credits for recording the songs. Just the artist and the song writters.

There should be plenty on the web though. Also get your hands on a copy of "Standing in the Shadows of Motown"

Best resource of tunes Jamerson played on. It does have a discography section, but mostly mentions the bands he played in, Motown and non-Motown with only a selective list of tunes.

I have the Hitsville boxset, but I was a little disappointed. The recordings sounded a bit... sterile? I dunno, they just don't compare to my vinyls, or my reel-to-reel of Whats Going On.

Oh, errrr, okay. You asked for box sets. Never seen vinyl or reel-to-reel come in a box set.

Good luck.

I have a vinyl Zep box-set :)

Im just saying, comparing What's Going On? on the actual album to the Hitsville version, the CD has less warmth than a german hooker. Its too sterile; as in heavily compressed and over produced.

Lo.

It's far from complete, but the best listing I know of is at:

I estimate JJ played on about 5,000 tracks at Motown up to 1973. If you have plenty of spare cash, the Complete Motown Singles box sets are superb, but almost every Motown album between 1966-1973 has his genius written all over it.
