Tom, make it clear to others what 'open' means. I think it's mainly a 1-2-4 world with a few 3s thrown in as needed.

I only use open-hand fingerings between 4th (Simandl) and thumb position (octave harmonic), and only in certain circumstances which require it. So I voted for "both", but I stick to closed hand 98% of the time.
Does your school address "pivots" as well? I know the "thumb below thumb position" will come up, too, right?

None of these really seemed to describe my approach, which uses only 1,2,4 but also extensive use of pivots and the thumb, so I didn't vote...
left foot doesn't come into it very often :)

I just started the bass and I was told to go closed all the time unless in thumb position. But sometimes since I have large span and I'm used to all 4 fingers for Electric bass I cheat and go with all 4 but thats very rarely. I don't know why People always give me **** when they see me cheating but I can have all my fingers on f,f#,g,g# all at once and have good intonation. But I still like to do closed cause thats what I was taught. Can anyone like give me reasons why I shouldn't do all 4 on the lower register I mean I can hit the notes? I've asked my bass teacher and a few other teachers and they say cause the 3rd finger isn't strong enough? Meh.

Pivots can be used in either of the two left hand techniques so go ahead and vote.

I only use open when it is strictly necessary. Closed works for nearly everything, especially when you combine it with pivots, and thumb below octave technique. I think the latter have become almost standard practice these days. I can't see anybody playing the prelude from the first suite without a little lower thumb playing.
Wouldn't this have been better suited for the technique section though? You might get more votes there.

I used my 3rd finger last night on a few notes. My 2nd finger was getting tired. I think 3 fingers sounds better for vibrato. More meat on the note!

I also like to use the bille approach in the lower positions where you replace 2 with 3. I voted for a combination, but I prefer to use thumb position below the octave when I can, instead of open hand.

I use all of them. I use open a lot to get drone strings happening (playing on the D string above the G while using the open G etc). I don't think I would use four fingers below the tenth position but who knows, if I needed to I would. Of course I use four fingers all the time from the tenth position on, encompassing a perfect fourth or even more for a whole tone scale. What are you looking for by taking the poll? Are you struggling with two different schools of thought or just the curious type?
