Hey everyone, I need your help. I am looking for any recordings of Stanley Clarke playing slap bass. What are your favorites? What do you all recommend? Thanks...

Check out the "Passenger 57" soundtrack. Mr. Clarke wrote all of the music for that, and has some pretty cool slapping on it.

You could bassicaly get any of his albums and there will be great examples of him slapping. Get his first album Stanley Clarke and School Days. These will keep you off the streets for a long time.

Peace!

One of my favourite Stanley Clarke tunes is "Hot Fun", especially the version from "I wanna play for you". That one really worked my muting skills when I learned it! Also from that album parts of "Jamaican Boy" and especially "My Greatest Hits" will satisfy your lust for Stanley's slapping!

Another great Stanley slap track is "Bassically Taps". It's a little duet with Gregory Hines tapdancing and Stan playing away, amazing tone and a lot of very clean muting, very nice!

Another underrated classic from Stan is "Rose Colored Glasses" from the second Animal Logic album. A very understated, powerful slap line, but very cool. In fact, I'd recommend that all Stan fans and indeed, anyone who enjoys intelligent pop music check out the Animal Logic records. For my money the first one was slightly better, but Stewart Copeland, Deborah Holland and Stanley were an amazing trio. Stanley never shows off, he just plays the most perfectly fitted lines around, with an attention to detail in terms of note choice and nuances comparable to that of say, Anthony Jackson! Heck, if you must hear Stanley soloing with Animal Logic, check out "In The Garden" from their second album! Seriously, check these records out, you will not regret it!

Peace and love to the Stanley fans around here, I'm always happy to discuss this guy, as underrated as he is! :)

"Future Shock", "Play The Bass 10^2", "Speed Ball" and "Time Exposure" from Time Exposure
"Play The Bass" from Let Me Know You
"Born in The USA" from Find Out
"Funk is it's Own Reward" from East River Drive

Stanley's new CD just dropped today! I plan on added it to my collection.

I heard some samples from Toys of Men on Amazon, and I am excited about a Stanley Clarke CD for the first time in about twenty or twenty-five years. It sounds like he really has re-connected with his Fusion roots, and there are several every strong acoustic tracks too,:D

I used to have an album of Stanley's called, "Rocks, Pebbles and Sand" that had a track called, "We Supply (All Your Funky needs)" that had the coolest slap line!!

Click here for the funk! (http://www.themp3x.com/track/6268/92821/1059624/)

That album also featured (Amongst many other notables) Simon Phillips on drums...

I "learned" this line YEARS ago... I still noodle with it almost every time I play. It is really infectious.

Best thread here in a long time. Keep the songs comin'. I've got almost all his albums on my mp3 player here at work (ripped myself, not pirated thank you) and I just made a playlist from the recommendations and called it 'slap clarke'. Slap + piccolo bass solos = Funk Overload.

Louis Johnson actually did the slap bassline on "We Supply." Stanley did the piccolo stuff that sounds like rythmn guitar.

No kidding! HA! That is so funny! For all these years, I thought I actually knew a Stanley slap line! It's still a groovy-cool slap line, even though it's not a Clarke line...

Well, shut my mouth and call me slap-happy!

Thanks for the clarification, Dr. C!

It IS a sick bassline! I was back in college when that record came out and I played it, or attempted it, all the time.:D

Ive never seen stanley play "Wild Dog" live and its sometimes hard on recordings to tell if he's slapping or just plucking with some excessive force....but Wild dog is a pretty kick ass tune.

A relatively easy Stanley Clarke slap line that is very conventional is "The Look" the title cut of the album of the same name by Shalamar.

+1 silly putty, the old version on the Journeyto Love album 1975 or limewire download not the new version. He has recorded 2 versions on 2 different solo albums, the 2nd is more techno.

A good Stanley slap line is "If I Could Do It Over Again" from Animal Logic II. Not very tricky, just classy and cool! Excellent song too!

Like one of the guys said you can just about get any Stanley Clarke cd a you gonna get some slap! Stanleys the Bomb! I use to have the return to forever cd tribute to John coletrane on Cassette tape, back in the day!

I'm a sax player, but anyway
can anyone suggest a way to get the track Toys of Men maybe from Liabary? I just purchased the tracks from Itunes yesterday , then converted them to mp3 but when I checked , the first track is not there, I guess I was too hasty when I purchased, and didn't see you only get the first track when you purchase the Album, I did track by track damm, I would hate to have to purchase all over again just for 1 track.

Thanks

On my itunes' homepage, there is a QUICK LINK called "Complete My Album"...have you tried that?
Click on it & you should see the 'partial' albums you have purchased & the price it takes to 'complete' it.

Ever heard "Midnight Soul Patrol" from Quincy Jones' I Heard That! album?
Louis J & Stanley trading fours...Louis slapping, Stanley on, I think, a phat-sounding tenor bass?
...and the same track has Alphonso Johnson playing the bass groove, Billy Cobham on cans, George Duke on synth, Hubert Laws on flute, & Louis J doing double duty on guitar.

PDB...if you can find it.

I believe Ron Carter is also playing upright bass on that track as well. Killer track!!!

I picked up Toys of Men yesterday, and I finally got all the way through it today. It is the best Stanley Clarke I have heard in thirty years, no joke. Stanley is just crushing fusion grooves and paying ferocious acoustic bass. I am glad that he is not fishing for a hit or radio play with this CD. This is the kind of music that made him my hero when I was in my teens and twenties.

i forget how old i am. heck chris, i'm glad you picked up on him. i'm with the DR. here. for me, in '73, stan just came out of nowhere. his upright playing got me, and after hearing him on a series 1 w/rtf...:bassist: funny to hear "underrated" and stan in the same sentence...back in the day, stan was trailblazing electric jazz inflected funk/slap bass, not to mention exquisite upright. gotta get the new cd :)

The thing about Stanley Clarke that always bugged me is that like one out of every 3 or 4 albums is a masterpiece and the others are crap with very forgettable tunes. He's always been content to put out any old thing while gearing up for his next big musical statement. He's even admitted to it, and it shows.

So in my opinion, the only Stanley studio albums that mean anything are "Stanley Clarke," "School Days," "Rocks, Pebbles and Sand," "If This Bass Could Only Talk," and "1,2 to the Bass." Those are his finest statements as a solo musician. The rest is just cool bass playing on top of lame songs. He has a really good live album called "Live at the Greek," too.

+1000000!!!!! Journey To Love is a great CD. One track that doesn't get enough recognition is "Concerto for Jazz/Rock Orchestra". Stanley, George Duke, Steve Gadd and David Sancious are KILLING!!! David's guitar solo is one of the best that I have ever heard!!!

+1. I always loved David's guitar playing! I got to see him few times back in the day with his own band Tone, and he tore it up! He never seems to get the props he deserves when people talk about 70's fusion guitar playing.

His last album 'The Return' has bassist Lincoln Goines great playing with some of the most beautiful tone on recent CDs.
Bill Connors was my favorite guitarist in Return To Forever too.
