I'm relatively new to playing, and know I need to get a teacher to make my bass more than an expensive doorstop. My question is, how to I go about evaluating my potential instructor?

Also, are there any easy to find lists of good teachers in particular localities?

Check the closest University/College Music Dept. They usually have a list of area teachers/x-students/professors, and they will usually be really good players.

If not check out musicstaff.com - they have some good stuff.

And if all else fails, go to the local music stores, although they will sell you anything if you are not careful. Don't get lessons from a guitar player or piano player!

Good luck -
