VIEW FULL LIVE VERSION : whats the extreme fan scale distance?
hurricanecary 10-16-2007, 11:38 PM what about a 35 to 31" fan? is that too extreme for say a 12 string bass? whats the most extreme distance you've ever heard of for any amount of strings? just curious whats possible and what others like, i am considering the options...so many....
thanks, HC.
spudmaster34 10-16-2007, 11:40 PM THIS IS SUCH AN EXTREME TOPIC I'M GOING TO TYPE IN ALL CAPS!!!!!11!!ONE!!!
Anyways, on a 12 string bass, 4" of fan shouldn't be too bad.

YA CAPS SHOULD BE MANDATORY FOR EXTENDED RANGE,
REALLY? WHATS THE MOST YOU'VE TRIED? I'VE NEVER PLAYED ANYTHING MORE THAN AN 8 & THAT WAS A KOREAN...(WELL LETS NOT TALK ABOUT THAT.):hmm:
spudmaster34 10-17-2007, 01:13 AM The dingwall super-j is 32"-34.25". Thats 2.25" for a 4 string, you're talking about less than doubleing that difference on 3 times as many strings.
I just did 3 on a six string and it does seem like it might need some getting used to, I did 35 1/2 and 32 1/2. Maybe shouldve done 35 and 32 instead.
PaleMelanesian 10-17-2007, 08:25 AM Dingwall uses a 3" spread (34-37) over 5 strings. I'd say that's about the usable limit.
You can do the math from there to a 12.

Mario... any pic of it?
Dirk Diggler 10-17-2007, 09:17 AM I've built 3 so far and I use 36-32 on a 6 string, it's fine. I don't think I'd want to go any steeper on a sixer.
Good luck,
Dirk
fullrangebass 10-17-2007, 09:23 AM My Dingwall 6ers are 37"-33 1/2". Very easy to get used to
pilotjones 10-17-2007, 11:18 AM Dingwall is as "standard" as you'll find, as he's done many of them and they are considered very nice to play on.
His stagger out by about 1/4" per string at the nut and 1/2" per string at the bridge, on a 5-string. But, a) the string spacing is equally important as the stagger, since same stagger with different spacing results in a different angle; and b) on a 12-string the side reach is so much bigger that you might want different angles anyway.
