Hey all ...
Well there is a thread going around about some new Fenders in Japan, and I really fell in love with the one I pictured in this thread.
What I want to know is, would it be possible for someone to install this third pickup into an existing Jazz bass?
How involved is this process and what do you think a luither would charge for this?
Thanks,
Aaron

I don't think the luithers here would be able to answer your question since there is a ban on advertising or something like that.
Try restating the question, something like "How involved is this process and what do you think a luither would charge for this?"

It is definately possible, I couldn't tell you what someone would charge though. A plunge router, and making a template for the route is about all you need to do........

It's easy to install that third pickup on a J-bass or J-clone. I guess a pro could ask $100-150. It's an easy mod.

You have to have in mind that this is an already finished bass so if you haven't done this before and you don't want to see your bass finish flying through the air think twice about doing this by yourself. If you still want to give it a shot theres a thread posted a few months ago by TBer Rodent where he work with an already finished bass... Id look for it.

Yeah while I do consider my skills on a router pretty good, thats usually with work I am starting from step 0 :) ... I think in this case I would prefer to default to the experts in the field :)

How odd! :eyebrow:
I have almost the same question, so rather than start another thread, I'd like to tack this on here, if I may!?
I'm just putting together a J Bass clone, which is already painted and lacquered and I wondered if I would be able to find a local (Germany) luthier, who would be willing and able to route out a perfect MM pickup outline, to allow me to install this extra pickup of mine :hmm:?

The finished bass will NOT have a pickguard on, so it'd have to be a pretty neat piece of router work :hmm:.
So, what do you guys think, please? Is it do-able? Would it be very expensive? Can anyone suggest anywhere in Germany that might undertake this work?
All comments welcome ;).

If you want to try by yourself... all you need is a good router, a routing bit with bearing and a MusicMan 4 pickguard as a template. You take a central line for the pickup, dismount the two Js and put the pickguard/template on the bass body with double-tape.
