ok, a random though popped into my head as i was getting some food...

scalloped fretless. it would give you a more "woody" tone with the conviniece of fretted designs. or maybe just wooden frets

the only down side is the wood would probably groove really easily.

ive been up too long...

If you do a search, there has been mild discussion of such things. Bottom line, you'd do lots of damage and getting it even and intonated would be hard. Plus, it wouldn't have the same tone as a fretless.

Was done by Lane Poor on his Minima bass. Very strange but innovative beast (both Lane and the bass.)

I don't think the scallops would be able to be very pointy and pronounced like usual, but instead they would have to be some sort of "rolling hills" type of design. Then again the ability to bend the notes is already a capability of the normal fretless bass. Just my thoughts . . .
