Hi all,
I recently bought this but really don't have a need for it. Plus it looks a little too much like my Fender USA Deluxe Jazz bass and I'm trying to get a little more diversity in my collection appearance-wise (sounds silly but it's true.)
Whoever owned this before the guy who owned it before me did some pretty interesting "relicing" to this bass. It looks "vintage" but not worn to the point of ridiculousness. He stripped off the finish on the body and stained it with a honey colored stain. It feels smooth like there may be a light clear coat on it. The headstock was dinged up a bit and looks old, like a 70s Jazz bass (minus the obvious SX logo and non-vintage tuners.) The whole thing looks like it has spent time in a smoky bar. I don't know how he did that but it has an aged look. He put a little light corrosion on some of the chrome parts. I soaked the bridge, control plate, and screws in brass/chrome polish for a few hours and got most of the corrosion off the bridge but there is still a little on the tuning knobs..nothing really that noticeable.
The pickguard is a Fender tortoise shell reddish brown put on by the previous owner. The bridge I believe is stock but is "high mass" and resembles a Badass bridge. The tuning heads are a funky oval shape which I didn't really dig but the backs of them have the plastic casing similar to Fender ultra-lites, which is cool. One of the screws on the bridge pickup is missing, not sure what happened to it but it doesn't seem to affect anything. The tone knob looks a little chewed (small piece of plastic broken off) but still functions fine. The neck has nice white binding and white pearl block inlays that Fender used on their jazz basses in the 70s. There is no funky orange radioactive paint that is common on SX basses. Everything is in good shape, just has a vintage look. I just put new D'Addario Pro-Steels on it. Action a bit high, good for slap. The stock pickups sound fine, they're passive but surprisingly loud...and could easily be replaced to get any tone you want. Overall this would make a fine backup bass or a fun project for anyone with more motivation than me who wants to mod it into something close to a vintage '75 Fender Jazz bass.
I'd like $145 shipped in the lower 48. $175 shipped if you want me to throw in a brand new Fender deluxe tweed gig bag.
I'd consider a trade for a decent 4-ohm cab or one of those Fulltone distortion pedals (the Mosfet one)
