I am new to the bass guitar as far as playing. I have learned to watch the bass players hand when I am playing drums so the instrument is not totally new to me. I have purchased a Squier bass (beginner pack). Where would you guys suggest starting. Money is tight so a teacher is not going to happen right now. The kit came with a DVD that I haven't had time to watch yet. I learned the drum kit on my own and found videos to be very frustrating. I am looking to play a range of rock - 70's, 80's. If anybody can give me a little direction, I would really appreaciate any help I can get. Thanks People!!

I want to say, that....
well from personal experience, my drummer picked up my bass, and made some rudimentary, but very catchy lines. The fact that you've been around a bass player, (and assuming that it was a good bass player that worked with you) gives u a real advantage. Watch the DVD if it helps, although, you probably have a good foundation for rhythm and groove, so I wouldn't be too worried. Coming here is a good start though!

Rythm and groove is probably the most important aspects of bass playing, so experience with drums is probably going to help a lot.
Start out with listening to a few tracks you like, pick out the bassline with your ear, and try to play along with it. Something not-too-difficult would probably be best to start with, obviously.

The first thing I would suggest is learning good technique. A teacher would be best for this, otherwise a book or the internet. This will prevent you developing bad habits which will have to be put right later. It also helps to prevent any physical problems (wrist pain ect ) later. Take a look at the "Floating Thumb" technique sticky at the top of this forum. When you have mastered that, a good site to start learning some basic theory i.e. scales ect is www.studybass.com
