VIEW FULL LIVE VERSION : My Muff'n is gone!!!
EricF 11-09-2007, 11:21 AM I've been a big proponent of the Muff'n for a long time, and will continue to be. It's a great pedal for gritty, tubey OD. With a tube swap for a pair of 12AX7s, the thing can really roar.
A while back, I bought a Fulltone OCD out of pure curiosity generated by this forum (not the first time that's happened). I squeezed it on to my small pedalboard alongside my Muff'n and Depth Charge and gave it a few chances at band practice. Again and again, I kept finding that I like the OCD more than the Muff'n for overdrive!!
It's official, my Muff'n has been replaced.
Bass Junkie 11-09-2007, 11:33 AM Tut... Tut... Tut... :scowl:
dancehallclasher 11-09-2007, 11:34 AM You know, guitar guys are always talking about the big low end on the OCD v.3 and so I've been interested in trying it on bass. Glad to hear you like it, and more intrigued myself...
syciprider 11-09-2007, 12:39 PM ....GAS build up....
superkicky 11-09-2007, 01:11 PM CLIPS!

Now you definitely owe us some clips. :p
Justin Tuskey 11-09-2007, 01:29 PM yeah ive had an OCD for a while now and love it. that plus a bassdrive gives me two awesome flavors of grit (one on all the time with low dirt and the other for crankin overdrive) i couldnt be happier
OhThePeacock 11-09-2007, 02:50 PM How's the OCD go up against the bassdrive?
Justin Tuskey 11-09-2007, 03:03 PM hmmmm to me, the bass drive holds a tiny bit more lows, but it obviously more versatile with the different modes and controls. BUT the ocd holds it own very well left on all the time with slight dirt. they are very similar to me, but i wouldnt want 2 of each. the ocd can get a lot more trebly with the tone knob than the bassdrive. i really like them both and at the same low gain setting they almost sound identical. they both sound great though. haha i guess i cannot accurately descibe the difference, but i love them both and they sound great live.
OhThePeacock 11-09-2007, 03:35 PM If you were to buy one would you go OCD or Bassdrive, right now I'm thinkin bassdrive.
why, why whyyyyyyyyyyy:bawl:
selfblessed 11-10-2007, 01:35 PM These things happen all the time. The OCD better be care full because once on top there is only one way to go. Although this could take years to happen.
TrevorOfDoom 11-10-2007, 01:44 PM i loved the OCD i played... on guitar, but it didn't do anything for my on bass. maybe i just played an earlier version. but it seriously killed on guitar. hmmm... gassy...
Justin Tuskey 11-10-2007, 01:48 PM have to definitely agree about the OCD on guitar, wow it brings out so many harmonics and is so rich. I use my bassdrive for the "all the time grit" and would be content with it, so I would have to say if I could only keep one it would be the bassdrive. But I have an eq pedal that I pair with the OCD in a loop, so I can get extra bass, or no bass, all treble, etc. with the OCD. Only thing I dislike about the bassdrive is the lack of blue LEDs...haha.
nickbear 11-10-2007, 04:14 PM the ocd is definately a good pedal, i actually use a muff'n at the moment and am really happy with it, i might experiment with tubes a bit.. its also a great guitar pedal ( sorry hehe)
markjazzbassist 11-10-2007, 09:36 PM wow really? very very interesting. i might have to check out one of those little boxes.
5stringwonder 11-11-2007, 03:11 AM Hmm...Been Gassing for Muff'n. Maybe I should be looking at the OCD instead...
ihateusernames 11-11-2007, 07:04 AM Not my first post in favor of the OCD, it is a great pedal - for guitar or bass. One of my friends has more distortions than I can count with his guitar and I can ALWAYS tell when he's using the OCD vs. anything else it is that much better.
I used it in practice once and have yet to replicate the body of drive that is produced with the OCD. A turbo tube screamer in turbo mode thinks about sounding like that, then realizes while good, it's out of it's league. The Sansamp GT2 would be okay as well, except it leaves it's own fingerprints on everything it touches (not saying that's good or bad, just not the same). I've not tried a bassdrive yet and wouldn't care to since I'd just buy an OCD if drive was needed on more than 5 songs or so. As much as I'd like to play a Muff'n, I can't imagine fusing around with a tube fitted box when the OCD sounds as good as it does.
EricF 11-12-2007, 01:10 PM Please don't anyone misunderstand me. The Muff'n and OCD do not have the same sound. Also, I'm not saying the OCD is a better pedal than the Muff'n, I just happen to prefer the sound of the OCD for the music I'm playing at the moment. The Muff'n continues to be an excellent pedal for gritty bass overdrive - for those people looking for that particular sound. The Muff'n will remain in my arsenal for the times I need that sound.

no way man... you turned you back on all that have followed you!!!!!
haha i kid... i dropped my muff'n for a hematoma :hiding:
koobie 11-13-2007, 10:28 PM This thread motivated me to dig out my OCD and give it a spin with the bass rig. I've been a huge fan of the OCD (for guitar) since it first came out and I think it's pretty cool for bass too. My OCD is the latest, current version, V3, it has a bit more drive & focus in the mids then earlier versions.
There is a noticeable, but not deal-breaking (to me, anyway) loss of low end with the OCD engaged, which is ironic given that the OCD has better bass response than most of the other guitar overdrive pedals I've had. It didn't sound bad or thin, but comparing the tone as the OCD was switched in & out showed a loss of heft with the OCD engaged. However, if a player was using an OCD in an "always on" scenario, a subtle boost of the lows on the amp could easily make up the difference.
Like some others have already noted, I too prefer the OCD's sound with fairly subtle amount of drive. I probably won't need to check out other OD pedals for the bass, the itch has been scratched.
