VIEW FULL LIVE VERSION : Best Bass Players
guitarrock24 11-09-2007, 01:02 PM Okay, so we all know who the extemely talented guitar players are. No need to list them. But what about the best bass players of all time. I personly think Cliff Burton is the best, some of his solos are a mazing and hes a extremely good beet keeper. Matt Freeman from Rancid is aslo really good. If you hane;t heard of rancid, check out the song Maxwell Murder.
trtrzenified 11-10-2007, 10:23 AM Flea, Ryan Martinie for rock/metal music.
I also personally like Sam Rivers from Limp Bizkit, due to his ability to groove.
jayp883 11-10-2007, 10:26 AM overall I think for experience and a true sense of what a groove should be I place my vote for Lee Sklar.......and of course many others.
Chazinroch 11-10-2007, 10:32 AM I think trying to identify the "best" puts making music in the category of a competitive sport. There are certainly different players, with different styles that you might prefer over someone else, but to call anyone the "best" takes away from this wonderful pursuit that we engage in called music. If they play bass, I like them. If they play bass and play the music that I prefer, I love them. Simple as that. No good, better, best, just different.
PrimusNut 11-11-2007, 03:11 PM Yeah, you can't rank musicians in order of best, just in order of favorites.
My top 5, in order:
Cliff Burton
Geezer Butler
Joey DeMaio
Geddy Lee
Les Claypool
Thunderitter 11-11-2007, 04:09 PM Yeah, you can't rank musicians in order of best, just in order of favorites.
+1000
Snarf 11-11-2007, 04:28 PM I don't really think anyone has come close to the brilliance of Nikki Six.
Dave R 11-11-2007, 04:32 PM We need to remember Joe Osborn. I read an article once that said that if you listened to the radio during the '60s, you probably heard Joe at least once an hour. He played on several hundred hit records, including everything by the Mama's & Papas, The Association, the 5th Dimension, Simon & Garfunkle, America, Carpenters, etc.
I think the most beautiful and melodic bass ever played was "America" from Simon & Garfunkle's "Bookends" album.
Jimmy-D 11-11-2007, 04:54 PM John Entwistle? anyone, listen to live at leeds
Godfather 11-11-2007, 04:55 PM Get a life, people !
gkbass13 11-11-2007, 04:59 PM ummmm...
i know words like best shouldnt be applied to things liek this, and favorites are subjective of course, but i would ahve to say that all fo these guys should be mentioned and would all be pretty hgih on the list.
jaco, jamerson, stanley clark, marcus miller, ray brown, ron carter, charles mingus, christian mcbride, john patitucci, edgar meyer, chuck rainey and victor wooten.
a few of my favorites in addition to that list of virtuosos and highly influencial players would be:
oteil burbridge, richard bona, matt garrisson and mshell ndgeocello
gkbass13 11-11-2007, 05:03 PM Get a life, people !
it seems as though one of these threads gets made on a monhly basis if not more often. i didnt want to be the first to say it, but...use the search function please.
I don't really think anyone has come close to the brilliance of Nikki Six.
:D Statement of the day, man!
ducknturtle 11-11-2007, 06:00 PM Don't think you'll ever reach a consensus on this one. Since no one has limited the discusion to metal/hard rock bassists I would like to nominate my own personal favorite bass playing hero-Charles Mingus
El-Bob 11-11-2007, 06:07 PM i don't wanna embarrass erlend again, but... http://youtube.com/watch?v=39dajnX_zCw
capnsandwich 11-11-2007, 06:12 PM There's so many out there and there are so many styles of bass playing and techniques out there that some bassists are better at than others so I guess my answer would be the most versatile bassists who are good at what they do. The names that come to me, in no order are:
John Patitucci
Dave Larue
Victor Wooten
Adam Nitti
Matthew Garrison
Tom Kennedy
Jimmy Johnson
Ric Fierabracci
etc.etc.etc.
This list can go on for quite a while but if you look at my avatar you'll see all those names summed up in one person.
fenderhutz 11-11-2007, 06:13 PM some of his solos are a mazing and hes a extremely good beet keeper.
I never knew Cliff had a green thumb. You learn something new everyday. Thanks!

southshoreconor 11-11-2007, 07:14 PM my biggest influence is matt freeman, his biggest influence was jon entwistle. so those are my two favorites. can't not mention flea though he's done it all from jazz/funk/rock to punk and hardcore.

rfclef 11-11-2007, 09:07 PM No "Best Of Bass" list would be complete without one name:
