I recently acquired a near mint LB-100. The previous owner swapped out the original pickup with one from Seymour Duncan (the quarter pounders I believe others have referred to here at TB) They're fine. I like 'em. But I wanted to get an authentic G&L pickup. I have sent queries to the G&L website, but not heard back for weeks. Does anyone know how I can get one? cost estimates?

i know g&l sell pickups sometimes on their store, but if you have no luck with them, keep an eye on ebay, good luck

I thought that the LB-100s don't use MFDs. Coulda sworn that they had a pickup that was more similar to a P-bass pickup.

LB 100's did'nt come with MFD's, they used off-the-shelf Schaller or DiMarzio's I think.

For the "authentic" G&L sound, you're on the right track with the MFD.

I got one from Buffalo Bros a couple years ago.

Ping "Sunbeast" (Karl), he might still have the one I traded him.

I understand that the LB-100s came with a "traditional" P-style pickup. Since it was replaced by the last owner, though, I want to get an MFD. Another way to think of it is converting an LB-100 to an SB-1. See?

Thanks, Templar. I'll try that. I have to admit, I thought this would be pretty easy through G&L. Kinda disappointed in them.

You should be able to go through any G&L dealer and order a pickup. Take your pick - Guitarmannyc.com, buffalobrosguitars.com or your local G&L dealer.

Thanks, craigb! I've sent e-mails to both. Hope this works. :)

Well I've heard back from both Guitar Man and Buffalo Bros.

Guitar Man responded within hours of my initial e-mail and we discussed what it would take to get the MFD pickup.

This evening, Buffalo Bros. responded saying they called G&L and have located an original (not G&L MFD) pickup for the LB-100. Apparently G&L still has a few laying around in a warehouse somewhere. We haven't discussed it, but I'm confident that they could acquire an MFD, too.

I am pleased with both companies, I'll figure out later which one to use. But for now, the question is this:

Do I go with the original pickup or the new MFD? I'm leaning towards the MFD, since I love the one in my SB-1, I know I'll be happy. I've never heard the original pickup.

Anyone have any opinions?

I'm partial to MFDs over pretty much everything else. But if you want the more "traditional P sound" then go with the original LB100 pickup.

agreed. the mfd is not a traditional sound, but to my ears, it brings nice texture to the tone.

I've decided to go with the MFD. I placed the order with Matt @ Guitar Man. It will take a week or two for delivery.

If I might ask, about what was the pricing on the MFD split coil?

Thanks.

Have not gotten it yet.

Matt at guitarmannyc.com said it would take a few weeks. It's been 3 weeks so far. I'll keep checking with him for status. Hopefully it'll come next week.

I'll let y'all know as soon as I get it and have it installed.

G&L really isn't setup to deal with end users. They expect their dealers to do that as pect of their overall strategy. I think you'll find that the dealers appreciate it and that it actually works pretty well.

My .02 and worth every cent.

Well, I talked to Matt @ guitarmannyc.com today. My pickup has arrived! He's sending it to me in Chicago via DHL. I should have it soon, then I can get it installed by a local shop.

I don't but it, 4Mal. They have a online store on their website. They sell parts through it, including (some) pickups. If they don't want to deal directly with end users, then they should update their friggin' website. It's years out of date. The first couple of authorized dealers I contacted informed me that they hadn't been dealers of G&L for a while. How hard is it to update a website? It's almost 2008 for crissakes.

It took them over four weeks to mail the pickup to the dealer I did end up going through, so apparently they're not set up to deal with them either. Who the heck are they set up to deal with?

No excuses, they were a big dissappointment.
