VIEW FULL LIVE VERSION : Stuff you hate to hear another Bassist Say
Kalyptic 11-11-2007, 02:50 AM Yer theres a thread about non bassists, so thought why not other bassists.
for me theres this guy whos relly up himself round me and the other day he challenged me, he sed he could slap faster than me.
Now i dont like to compete in music but hes generally a tool anyway. He did the classic "play higher ground as fast as you can" now since i dont practice higher ground 24/7 like him i cant play that faster, so i did another thing. He said he could do it faster and played higher ground again. so i sed, "can u play anything else?"
the look on his face was hilarious.
so any bassist hates?
Riley 11-11-2007, 03:01 AM "real bassists use fingers"
no you moron: real bassists use both
Kalyptic 11-11-2007, 03:39 AM lol real bassists use their tongues!
Riley 11-11-2007, 07:20 AM i stand corrected
Jimbob Jones 11-11-2007, 07:32 AM Ah, your bass/amp/effects rig is worth less than mine, therefore I am a better player than you.
Ramstien 11-11-2007, 08:01 AM My teacher told me not to rest my thumb on the higher strings when playing. *face palm*
peaveyuser 11-11-2007, 08:31 AM My teacher told me not to rest my thumb on the higher strings when playing. *face palm*
Of course not that would make no sense, rest your hands on the lower strings:p
Does it count that I hate to hear myself talk about basses all the time? To other bassplayers, guitarists, drummers, girlfriends, friends, by-passers etcetera.
And I hate to hear other bassplayers play lousy riffs in the music store when I'm trying out an unamplified bass and the cabin is right behind me. I have a sneaking suspicion that the guy was in fact...a guitar-player!!!!
Bassplayers here are mellow. I'm probably the most annoying player in the hood :hiding:
manicbassman 11-11-2007, 12:26 PM "I took bass up cos it was easier than guitar"...
It's a completely different instrument... just cos it's got fewer strings doesn't mean it's easier...
"I only play Bass because they couldn't find a bassist and I was the worst at guitar"
Hmmm maybe that's because no bassist with any sense would touch your band...
Gearhead17 11-11-2007, 11:27 PM "You need to dial out the midrange - you are a bass player."
A Guitar Center employee told me this when I trying out a new bass rig....need I say more?
Chipsonfire 11-12-2007, 01:45 AM "Slap is useless, you shouldn't learn it"
I'll learn whatever I d*** well please! Slap sounds good to me and, because this is just a hobby, I'm going to learn what makes the sound that i like! :spit: :bassist: :D
BassXgirl 11-12-2007, 02:07 AM Hearing a bass player brag that he can play FASTER. What tha? Faster does not mean better. :scowl:
It's funny htat he wanted to play Higher Ground fast. hehe
:bassist:
Kalyptic 11-12-2007, 02:46 AM yer hes rather a tool, but i dont let him get to me.
Depth_Charge 11-12-2007, 04:58 AM "Plays like butter".
NWF Bassist 11-12-2007, 05:10 AM "if you want I can help you get a better sound out of that"
dick
m3t4lhed 11-12-2007, 11:51 AM "good bassplaying man"
i know that man, tell me something new. :)
mjolnir 11-12-2007, 11:56 AM "Dude, you gotta do something about that tone... it thumps too damn much!"
O_o
MikeBass 11-12-2007, 12:15 PM "Jaco only needed 4"- Who gives a rats a$$ how many Jaco "only" needed. I need 4 and sometimes 5, so go away.
"I can play like that, I just choose not to"- No you can't. So stop lying.
"Sadowsky's are just parts basses- using Warmoth parts, Dimarzio pick-ups and an Aguilar pre-amp"- Well then, I guess every bass with that combo sounds like a Sadowsky. Funny, they never do though...hmm.....wonder why???
"You play too fast" - (usually followed by my second comment.......) Well, because I can. I don't 90% of the time, but I can and I do.
"You don't need that expensive XXX amp/XXX bass to sound good"- Yeah, maybe it's true, but I like it/them.
I have more. I'll toss them up later.
bassphreak 11-12-2007, 01:24 PM I don't get many comments from other bassists....but I always like the
"you should be playing a ****** (insert name for bass(usually fender), amp, etc)".
I don't care. You like what you have, I like what I have (finally).
bassphreak 11-12-2007, 01:28 PM I should add that I'm pretty new to playing so I get some 'advice' that I'd rather not have.
blizzard 11-13-2007, 03:52 AM I guess I hate when I talk to a bassist and ask what they play to which they reply "Umm I dunno, but it has two pickups" and then I will see it sometime later and its a Pbass.
"Flea is the best player in the world"
azzyrazzy 11-13-2007, 04:14 AM "I can play like that, I just choose not to"- No you can't. So stop lying.
"I choose not to run!" -Jerry Seinfeld :D
1337hax0r 11-13-2007, 05:15 AM fix your tone, i hate when people tell me that! my tone is fine thanks
nefarious 11-14-2007, 02:11 AM "you try and sound more like that guy from red hot chili peppers, fly he is my idol" me-"well first off its flea jackass and secondly I should try and sound like myself.....jackass"
Bassscholar 11-14-2007, 04:36 AM Do you know where one is?
----___----
mattofash 11-15-2007, 11:28 AM was doing a gig with some good friends of ours and their bassist is a great guy but during the soundcheck his amp blew. Rather than getting mine which would take half an hour as I had just left mine so would of been fine to go back and get as we had loads of time, he let the soundguy plug straight into a DI and didnt bother with any kind of monitor on stage for us.
Never forgiven him for that:crying:
optikhog 11-15-2007, 11:37 AM "don't you have a solo or something?" No, I play bass, not giant guitar.
bassbuddy 11-15-2007, 02:37 PM "Dude, about that bass you lent me......."
Samuel. K 11-15-2007, 02:51 PM "Wow you have so many pedals! I thought you were a bassist?"
I have like, 6. 3 of which are in a loop and two are always on.
The other one is a tuner!
:hmm:
warnergt 11-15-2007, 03:29 PM I guess I hate when I talk to a bassist and ask what they play to which they reply "Umm I dunno, but it has two pickups" and then I will see it sometime later and its a Pbass.
Heh, this is my favorite.
+1
Fassa Albrecht 11-15-2007, 04:47 PM This is a real incident from a few days ago, when I went and sat in on a friend's band's practice session.
Me- Hey, you're the bassist aren't you?
Bassist- Yeah, you play yourself?
Me- been playing about a year...
Bassist- What bass do you play?
Me- Shergold Marathon
Bassist- I've never heard of them. Anyway, everyone knows Fenders are the best- anything else is just rubbish.
Me- Yeah, that's why my bass is 31 years old and still going!
Bassist- Uh..........
GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!
Kalyptic 11-17-2007, 04:57 AM Other GUY:"Ha you finger wrong, youre supposssed to go I M I M I M I M"
Me: "dude i finger differently for different sounds and rythms"
oTHER guy: "when u were playing just then u didnt slap right either, this is how you slap" (does the guitard flailing slap thing)
Me: " I was flamenco plucking
Damn guitards who think they'e bass players
KsToaDangr 11-17-2007, 05:10 AM him: "i broke a string and dont have any extras with me...do you mind if i use your bass to play the rest of my set?"
me: "i've only got my main bass with me, but if i had my second tonight, i'd let you use it."
him: "nevermind anyway. i play a 4 string, so it would sound better than your 5 string anyway"
Darkstrike 11-17-2007, 05:21 AM "real bassists use fingers"
no you moron: real bassists use both
???
:ninja::ninja::ninja:
Real bassists use basses.
:ninja::ninja::ninja:
Yngwie 4String 11-17-2007, 05:30 AM Other person: Youve just got an Ibanez GSR200 and a little amp, you must suck.
Me: Im poor, I live in a college dorm with a noize nazi next door, I dont have the money or the need for bigger stuff, and I love my GSR200. Kiss my ass.
Other person: Yeah but if you were good you would have bigger equipment.
Me: *plugs in and plays*
Other person: O I think I need to go practice some more.
Me:I do to. Now get the hell out of my room!
---------------------------------------------
Also another guy I know has a Rickenbacher 4003, and marshall stack that was just literally handed to him. He wont learn how to play it.
Ramstien 11-17-2007, 08:02 PM Of course not that would make no sense, rest your hands on the lower strings:p
Way to nitpick, you know what I mean.
The_Orlonater 11-22-2007, 08:39 PM I hate it when some players say, "Thereīs a best player in the world." I also hate it when they make such a HUGE deal about playing a fretless like itīs impossible. I can understand if they have a bit of fear and questioning of their skill, but in all honest it gets annoying.
johncg 11-22-2007, 08:47 PM "I'm really a guitarist."
This comment hurt my ego because the dude was actually pretty good!
knumbskull 12-25-2007, 06:12 PM really good bass player: 'so many bassists just don't appreciate the real feeling in music, maaan'
[plays note perfect Jaco Pastorius song]
me: 'sweet! so do you write any of your own stuff?'
really good bass player:
[pause]
[plays same Jaco Pastorius song again]
B4snrise 12-25-2007, 08:10 PM This happened at a jam we were hosting when I was showing another bassist how to use my rig.
Other bassist "You should set your amp like this..." (makes motions with his hands)
Me (caught off guard) "Huh? Why?"
Other bassist "Because it will sound better" (starts adjusting every knob on my amp without playing a thing) "see.." then shakily plays a lead type riff that with his new 'enhancements' makes my normally smooth sounding rig emit noises best described as farting in a trash can.
Me "Oh, right... ...but that won't fit with what my band does."
Other bassist (dumb look) "...oh..."
Me  He never even played a note before adjusting the amp! *** :help:
Kalyptic 12-25-2007, 08:24 PM not as bad as a guy i know, who just puts all the knobs on full
setekh 12-25-2007, 08:58 PM not as bad as a guy i know, who just puts all the knobs on full
hey, full is the way to go :D

DistantTremor 12-25-2007, 10:06 PM This one overdone advertisement for a decked out 2-string bass with this weird skeletal body that went around the neck had the advertiser saying "To be honest, the E and A strings are where it's at. Anybody who uses the other two strings are overplaying. Besides, this bass LOOKS really awesome."
:scowl:
southshoreconor 12-25-2007, 10:21 PM "I haven't changed my strings in ____ (weeks, months, dare i say years)"
"can i borrow your amp?"
BryanM 12-26-2007, 12:15 AM not as bad as a guy i know, who just puts all the knobs on full
But they go to eleven.
"Why would you put flatwounds on a fretless, that makes no sense?"
GC Salesman.
knarleybass 12-26-2007, 12:18 AM "I just finished playing bass on the newest number one hit record of the year, and now I just got a touring gig, I will be making more in a week than you in a year. What kind of bass rig do you use? I don't know much about that stuff because I am really a guitar player."
DIVES ME OUT OF MY MIND!
Lowtonejoe 12-26-2007, 12:29 AM "real bassists use fingers"
no you moron: real bassists use both
Uh...fingers and toes???
:eyebrow:

BELLATOR 12-26-2007, 12:53 AM "Get a Fender"
sethlow3 12-26-2007, 01:00 AM "do you mind if I use your rig? THEY said I could"
The Owl 12-26-2007, 09:04 AM Two for me:
1) So dude, when are ya gonna start playing a real bass like a Fender? :scowl:
I played a jazz gig back in the early 90's and got this one, still peeves me to this day: "When are ya gonna start playing a REAL bass and get an upright? Electric bass does NOT belong in jazz"  :rollno:
Part of me wanted to repsond in the following manner:
"OK, so I don't have a real bass? How would you like me to smack you over the head with said instrument to illustrate its reality and physical existence to you?" :D
B4snrise 12-26-2007, 01:11 PM "do you mind if I use your rig? THEY said I could"
At least they asked... I watched a guy at a jam pick up another guys harmonica and start playing it - Eww!
Same jam different night - I just finished a set with the band. While I am making my way off stage a guy stops me by grabbing the neck of my bass. I look him in the eye and he lazily gazes back as if I am supposed to hand some guy I have never met my favorite axe and let him play a jam I am not getting paid for. I politely ask him what he thinks he is doing by grabbing my axe and he says he is the next bass player up and needs to borrow MY instrument. I guess someone in the crowd told him that he could borrow my gear since my baby looked cooler than the low buck solid colored spray painted garage sale Peavey the host had as a loaner.
locolobo85 12-26-2007, 01:19 PM I need a ________.

Lined fretlesses are "training wheels".
Why don't you string you bass right handed so I can play it. Thats the reason why I play left handed dude.

Throckmorten 12-26-2007, 02:02 PM The bass player that gets (rightly) insulted when told he chose bass because it is simpler than guitar ...

"they're easier to play once they stretch out a lot, they dont hurt my fingers as much, and they sound way better"
sound is one thing thats all opinion, but seriously, ive never come across anyone who knows what theyre doing that can stand to play on dead strings..i change mine almost once a week on my main bass when im gigging a lot
I dunno, i dont usually get people nit picking me since most people around my area tend to think i know what i'm doing...heh, got em all fooled

Gruesse, Pablo
Shovelbone 01-02-2008, 08:35 AM I got this from a bass player in a half a$$ blues band -
How can you call yourself a bass player if you don't actually play in a band? This was coming from a guy who played the 1 and 5 during Pride and Joy. I guess I still have so much more to learn!
Purple Haze 01-02-2008, 08:57 AM Friend: "It was already like that before you lent me it."
Me: "No im pretty sure my amp didnt have a cigarette burn on it before I lent you it, I dont smoke, YOU do."
i hate hearing: you have to get a tube amp man, SVT classic is the only way to go.......
i use a GK1001 and i can't convince myself to make the switch, I also don't want to lug around a 90 lb amp!
5andFretless 01-02-2008, 11:22 AM "Where are the frets? Where are the markers?" ...
"Why did you choose a bass that is so difficult to learn?"
"Your intonation is way off." (No it isn't, you just expected to be because I was playing a fretless)
"Your fretless sounds funny" No, it sounds like a fretless.
satchelbsamia 01-02-2008, 11:42 AM can i just play through your rig?

- No, I don't really use tabs. I can write you a chords chart on the go if you want.

Alembicplyr 01-03-2008, 10:00 AM Yes, Quite scary, I'd probably find an easier transition to more strings, opposed to 2.
Besides, I could potentially injure myself or put someones eye(s) out with that thing.

Stereo Joe 01-03-2008, 08:38 PM There's a 'bassist' who comes out to a lot of shows I play at this one bar. When I first started playing there with a new band, this dude went up to the guitarist and asked him 'why didn't you get me to play bass for you?' He also told me that I should wear jeans and boots because 'that's what bass players wear' and that I should wear a black shirt because it's slimming....
After one particular set, he came up to me, put his hand on my shoulder, and said 'it's not about the mistakes you make, it's how you recover.'
Thanks for that...
Apparently he's one of those mid-forties dudes who plays bass in their basement instead of with a band and likes to come to shows to criticize instead of listen. I almost punched him.

Let him play one song the next time your band plays out, see if he can sell those "Woof tickets" and if he can cash that check he's been writing.

i also am a fan of claypools playing, musical sensibilities (which he does have) AND his tone. yes i do like his tone. think about the music he writes. it just makes sense to me. it wouldnt be primus, C2B3, holy mackeral, les, any of his projects without that tone. i think it gives him character. and in a good way. not like a "im a famous bass player with bad tone so everyone knows its me". i dont know how to explain it really, it just makes sense to me.
actually if i could make my get-up to sound like his from "of whales and woe" i would.

DistantTremor 01-09-2008, 10:43 AM i also am a fan of claypools playing, musical sensibilities (which he does have) AND his tone. yes i do like his tone. think about the music he writes. it just makes sense to me. it wouldnt be primus, C2B3, holy mackeral, les, any of his projects without that tone. i think it gives him character. and in a good way. not like a "im a famous bass player with bad tone so everyone knows its me". i dont know how to explain it really, it just makes sense to me.
actually if i could make my get-up to sound like his from "of whales and woe" i would.
THANK YOU.
Les Claypool's tone is unique. I can understand if someone might not like it, but that doesn't mean it's bad tone. I'd kill to get that tone out of my bass any day.
""The E and the A string is all a bass player should need to do the job properly,If you want to play fancy stuff on the skinny strings then you should be playing lead guitar.I also have another standard bass that I have pulled the d and g strings off the guitar but it has no impact live like this beast.""

bass player at my school: dude you playing is great but its to roundy warmy thumpy barky, it sounds like a kick in the pants its to BRBRBRBRBR (making sound with lips), why don't you cut your mids? thats how i get a good sound
me to myself: thats exactly how i want to sound, and anyway your idea of good tone is a wah pedal maxed out through a big muff (not always a bad thing), i'll keep up what i'm doing
Me out loud: sure i'll think about it (i'm a bass player! im the mellow one remember?)
Wootsticks 01-12-2008, 01:32 PM Luckily, there are five really cool bassists at my school, and four of us are in the school's musical. The crazy one and I are in the show singing (except he can't sing, I think he's tone deaf), another in the sound booth, and another one is playing bass for the actual music of the show.

Snow14 01-13-2008, 09:28 PM I really hate that my lead guitar thinks he can play bass, I know that it doesn't really fit cause he's not a bassist but what ever.
*he starts playing my bass by pulling on the strings as high as they go and then letting them go*
Me: Dude, thats a horrible way to play bass.
Him:Well, it's the way I play bass.
no it's not, you idiot, your a horrible bassist.
Him:I play bass all the time.
Me:You don't have a bass.
Him:Well, it's just the first four stings. (of a guitar)
no it's not, I hate you.
But whatever, he's still a cool.:smug:

But I'm fine with that cause then I can have his five string.
Fine Cut 01-14-2008, 11:48 AM went to a show last summer, and some punk band was playing...the bassist was usin a Digitech Whammy, and a GK diesel dawg overdrive...i didnt notice the pedals, as they were beside his amp, on the side i couldnt see, and i asked him...
me: "nice sound man, what kinda overdrive to you use?"
bassist: "Overdrive?...wudda you mean, overdrive?"

BillyB_from_LZ 01-14-2008, 12:13 PM ... ive never come across anyone who knows what theyre doing that can stand to play on dead strings..i.

Fretless1! 01-14-2008, 12:50 PM but seriously, ive never come across anyone who knows what theyre doing that can stand to play on dead strings..i
With all due respect, I believe James Jamerson was noted for never changing strings.

Just J 01-14-2008, 01:09 PM ive never come across anyone who knows what theyre doing that can stand to play on dead strings..
Are you serious? I've read tons of stories of bassists (incredibly talented bassists at that) who prefer the sound of dead strings over super bright strings and go as far as smearing chicken grease on the strings to deaden them (bassist in the Dap Kings for example).
I myself hate twangy, super bright bass tones.
bobyoung53 01-14-2008, 01:16 PM When the bassist grabs his active 5 string with super bright strings on it, plugs it into his 2 x 10 cab with SS head and starts slapping.
rockwarnick 01-14-2008, 01:20 PM yea i love dead strings. i might change my strings once a year. maybe.
"I don't really know what those knobs on my amp do, I just let the band take care of that..."
"TWO pickups? TWO basses?!? WHY?!?"
I got two; first the next guy up at an open mic who I stop from plugging his line into an AC plug strip thinking it's a DI. "Oh, I usually have my roadies do that for me" Second; And my favorite, Two pretty very pretty women walk up to me as I'm just rolling in my rig at the beginning of the night, and ask "could you turn it down" To which my reply was "But I haven't set up yet" They responded "But you LOOK loud!" I love what I do, yes indeed.
I take it you've never heard of Joe Osborn...
Or Mick Karn.
NationwideBass 01-14-2008, 01:45 PM Hrm...I had two comments that stick out to me:
'All bass players need to sing. You need to start singing' - You don't want to put a mic in front of me... :)
'You sound good, but playing with a pick is holding you back. You need to learn to play with your fingers.' - No, seeing as how I only have three fingers on my picking hand, I'm doing just fine with a pick, thank you.

You do realize Jaco ain't THAT popular, I only heard of him when I started going on here, while he is good, he is a JAZZ bassist. Not everybody plays jazz, so they don't look into bassists in that genre. Do you expect everybody that picks up bass to instantly know who Jaco is, no. I guarantee you guys most younger players don't know who he is, why? again he is not a player in our generation and ain't that popular in the first place. You can't argue on his influence but you can on his popularity. Face it the only time i've EVER heard someone in person talk of jaco besides me mentioning it was when my bass teacher did.
Jeese some bassists on this forum get so worked up on Jaco like he was Jesus or something.

GradyBass 01-16-2008, 07:38 PM I'm not a Jaco worshipper. I don't know Birdland and I can't play you Teen Town, and I don't go searching for that Jaco tone.
But I have many of his albums, follow his work, and have massive and severe respect. You have to understand that Jaco is one of these people who helped liberate the bass from supporting role to solo instrument. Jamerson, Clarke, Pastorius... all these guys changes the climate of Bass.
Donna Lee. That's all I have to say.
BUT- I still occassionally find this music UNLISTENABLE. I bought the Weather Report boxed set, and while it's not ALL Jaco playing the bass (other ridiculously talented bass players are on there), I had to literally force myself to get through that catalogue. Some of Jaco's stuff is really mind-boggling, but I'm not a fusion cat so lots of it falls on deaf ears. But I do try, because I realize a great musician/composer when I see one. I'm working on Coltrane melodies and theories right now, but I don't play sax.
It's just a matter of respect. You don't have to like Jaco, or Victor, or Stanley or Marcus or Jamerson... But as a bass player, you need to understand that the cats you're listening to who YOU idolize, idolize these "unpopular" guys. There's an amazing journey you can take when you listen to what YOUR idol idolizes. Then you take it another step. And another. And another. Then you're listening to classic Bach piano suites and listening so intently to the left hand on that piano- and the simply wicked bass lines that J.S. pumped out.

Are you responding to my post because it doesn't really contradict what I said. I'm not knocking him as a player, I'm knocking the bassists who seem to think he was god and knock down other bassists that don't know of him. Face it you can be a good bassist and not know Jaco, just like one can be a good guitarist without knowing hendrix or a good drummer without knowing Peart.
Jaco isn't bass, Jaco played bass this is what some people need to understand.

GradyBass 01-16-2008, 10:25 PM No, Peaveyuser, I'm not trying to contradict anything you have said. I don't think you're wrong, either. As I said, I don't worship Jaco at all. But if you wonder why some bassists may think Jaco is Jesus, just know it's probably bigger than just one crazy crackhead playing some wicked bass.
EDIT: But I completely, 100% disagree with anyone who puts down other bass players for not knowing who Jaco is, so you've got my complete thumbs up on that one. I didn't know who Jaco was till about 8 or so years into playing bass.

Many different genres have their own so called "standards".
For example, there are a-LOT (Not all:p)of bluegrass players that dislike any other bass except the upright (Mostly traditional bluegrass).
I have a relative that heads up a bluegrass band that tends to act like an "elitist", when it comes to electric bass in traditional bluegrass. (He's the front man and guitar player, still a newbie in comparison to the rest of the band),I enjoy it when he "tells me like it is", as though I started playing yesterday, fact is I have 2 decades on him as a musician. Go figure.

Him: "Really, you have to, and you can make it sound like you're playing fingerstyle."

Fretless1! 01-17-2008, 02:03 PM And I hate to hear other bassplayers play lousy riffs in the music store when I'm trying out an unamplified bass and the cabin is right behind me. I have a sneaking suspicion that the guy was in fact...a guitar-player!!!!
You are, in all likelihood, correct.
I find this interesting, too. Why is it that two bassists can stand side by side and try out equipment and, as a general rule, not bother each other? But if a guitarist starts playing on the other side of the store, both bassists get annoyed

No i've heard of bach and beethoven before jaco because they have had a larger impact on music as a whole, you can't argue with that i'm sorry but that is a fact. Bach, beethoven and composers like them have literally shaped and influenced music to what it is nowadays for various instruments and genres. Almost everybody has heard of them, now go up to a random person and ask em who jaco is.

Yes know them, be influenced by them but the fact that you don't know of them DOES NOT make you any less of a player. I can't stand about hearing about bassists who make such a big $h!t about him (not that he doesn't deserve it) and then complaining about bassists who don't know of him.
For example I know of Jaco, I see what he did but there are bassists that have never heard of him that can play circles around me, in terms of jamming understanding of music and overall skill in general.
So if you find a bassist who doesn't know who Jaco is don't instantly judge and do this :rollno:, then your just being a useless moron. Instead tell them who he was, that will help them.
As I said before I hadn't heard of Jaco until i logged on to this forum, how would it be my fault if no one mentioned him before then?
Shovelbone 01-17-2008, 04:53 PM No i've heard of bach and beethoven before jaco because they have had a larger impact on music as a whole, you can't argue with that i'm sorry but that is a fact. Bach, beethoven and composers like them have literally shaped and influenced music to what it is nowadays for various instruments and genres. Almost everybody has heard of them, now go up to a random person and ask em who jaco is.

When I meet a young player, or anyone for that matter who has more than a passing interest in music, I always mention Jaco when the conversation turns to bass playing. Jaco redefined the role of the bass in modern music. He definitely derserves his place in the upper echelon of the music world. If someone is not familiar with Jaco I do not think of them as a useless moron nor do instantly pass judgement on them.
Until just a couple of years ago I was not familiar with a bassist by the name of Steve Swallow. Steve Swallow invokes the same response from that Jaco does from the musical community - he is a bass God to many, myself included since someone enlightened me about him.
I watched your videos by the way........ nice technique and I was impressed!

"Pretty good, now learn to play it blind or fretless."
Wasn't really sure what to make of that.

Or you had the last word in an argumet with Godzilla.
Compliments either way.
But on bass, yeah, there's room for interpretation.

grieverOSOK 02-06-2008, 07:09 PM basically anything unjustly negative. i always hear people talking **** about other bands they played with or famous bands they've never even met, but rant about how terrible they are. its just sad to see people putting so much energy into negativity. the whole "competition" thing is disappointing too.
ronniequeue 12-25-2008, 06:52 PM Bass is easy, this bassist is better than that bassist, if you can slap you are good, if you use a pick you suck, etc... I hate guitarists who think they can play bass. I also hate soundmen and engineers that turn the instrument down so all you hear are the lowest sub-frequencies (or nothing at all). What a bunch of idiots. God, that felt good.
bassflyer19 12-25-2008, 09:33 PM sitting there playing a P-Bass rather well, since ive been playing about 5-6 years now. and this chick that keeps playing the same crappy slap riff walks by and says "Oh, P-Bass, those are really good!" thanks. kinda own one and im playing this one for a while. then she said some random crap about hating Jazz basses and i think i tuned her out from then on and went back to the P.
bassflyer19 12-25-2008, 09:35 PM also, this isnt from other bassists, but i still hate it. when guitards go "bass is so easy, guitar is so much more complex". i then have visions of snappings their head off, but it never seems to happen.
paganjack 12-25-2008, 10:21 PM i've had people call me a 'lead bassist' too, as well as something along the lines of a 'monster shredder.'
i really don't know how to feel about that. I don't mean to dominate playing situations or shred overly monstrously, but i suppose it happens...:hmm:
Metal Matt 12-25-2008, 10:53 PM "There's no need for (volume to be that loud, cabs and amps to be that big, etc...)"

It's like some people can't believe that anyone can prefer old, large heavy gear over all this new lightweight stuff. Anyways, I decide what's needed. The sound and volume fit my band and my tastes and that's all that matters. More power to you for enjoying your lightweight amps and cabs, but I'll stick with my mountain...;)

"Instead of tuning to drop C on your 4 string, just go buy a 5 and play in standard" (bonus points if they suggest in some way that drop tunings = a less skilled musician)
:spit::spit::spit:
I want to dropkick babies in their soft heads when I see this.
For certain styles of music, the "go buy a 5 and play in standard" approach won't work. Drop tunings make things easier, reaches that would be completely impractical, and things like that. I don't know if it makes me a less skilled musician or anything, but it helps out in a band setting to just tune to the guitars. Can't see anything wrong with making things easier for everyone. *shrugs*
I tune to drop B on my four strings and all I need to say as far as tone, is that a 135 tuned to B sounds nothing like a 110.
It's pretty rediculous anyways to say.."hey, instead of paying for new, larger strings, just go spend several hundred more on a bass". :rollno:

Disraeli Gears 12-26-2008, 02:51 AM "real bassists use fingers"
no you moron: real bassists use both
I would argue against this. Real bassists (although it's definitely a good idea to know both) use whichever fits what they want to play. For me, that is almost exclusively fingers. That being said, I would never stoop to saying "real bassists use fingers" because I have equal respect for people who do pick.
Why don't you play a (4, 5, 6, 7, or 12) string? So and so does...
No matter what string configuration I play, someone always thinks I should have 1 more string or one less string.

I notice there's a 5 string headstock in your avatar. Why isnt there a 4 string headstock in your avatar? That's what Jaco played...
mtaffonso 12-26-2008, 08:05 AM Some of the pearls heard on the way ....
1) I'm left handed, but play as right handed. Sometimes people ask me "Why don't you play like a left handed ?"
I answer : When you don't know how to play, you suck in both ways ! So , I learned on the easier and cheaper way to find instruments.
2) Why someone choose to play bass , since it is a instrument that you can't play alone ?
3) Once in a show , I was with a 6 string bass and a guy said : "Too many strings".
4) Jaco only needs 4 strings, why do you need more ?
QuelOround 12-26-2008, 09:26 AM "You play bass?" - proceeds to pick it up with out asking and banging on it, which is followed by a futile attemtp to place it back on its stand. It then falls to the ground, acquiring a new dent/scratch/chip.
"It's a cheap bass anyway. It's not like it's expensive, you shouldn't even get mad. I mean it's a Gio its a piece of crap"
God I hate it when people touch my things, break them, and then tell me how it's my fault for buying cheap stuff... I'm poor you a$$hat. My parents don't buy me everything in the world.

"Whaaaa! What a long guitar!"
Merry Christmas! In fact, why blaming guitarists playing bass? I had my first gig as a guitarist in 1983 and the first as a bass player in 1986. Since that decade, I used in my guitar evolution all what I've learned on the bass (and double-bass) and vice-versa. I do realy believe that a complete musician must know also a bit of everything - including electronics (fixing cables on stage, e.g.) or mixing and editing. Maybe I'm wrong?

ronniequeue 12-26-2008, 03:45 PM I agree, absolutely. I play BG(finger, slap, pick) and upright(jazz and classical), drums, percussion (concert, marching, latin), mandolin, guitar, tuba, and I sing. I just don't like guitarists (or any musicians) who think that because they play one string instrument they can play all of them. You must dedicate specific practice and listening time to each instrument to develop musical ability on the said instruments. That being said, many guitarists and bassists freely switch between the two and are fantastic at both (Paul McCartney, Lenny Kravitz, Donald Fagan, Omar Rodriguez, etc). Unfortunately, you don't encounter gifted musicians such as these on a daily basis. Plenty of ignorant ones, though. Happy holidays!

bluewine 12-26-2008, 04:50 PM Playing fast or thumping and slapping (which only a few players can do) never impresses me.
Yer theres a thread about non bassists, so thought why not other bassists.
for me theres this guy whos relly up himself round me and the other day he challenged me, he sed he could slap faster than me.
Now i dont like to compete in music but hes generally a tool anyway. He did the classic "play higher ground as fast as you can" now since i dont practice higher ground 24/7 like him i cant play that faster, so i did another thing. He said he could do it faster and played higher ground again. so i sed, "can u play anything else?"
the look on his face was hilarious.
so any bassist hates?

wheelyjoe 12-27-2008, 05:17 PM I was doing a gig in school with my band, and we're relatively good, for a school band, and I'd brought my gear in because the school stuff is shocking!
I brought in a Roland DB 500 160watt amp, not enormous but easily big enough for a school hall.
I had it in the music room, and I was sat on it jamming with myself, and one of the english teachers comes in, and his band are playing, it's all staff.
He's brought his gear in, and we've all sound checked with mine (there were other student bands) and the mics and stuff, and he goes "we're using my amp" I was like "but we've all used mine.." etc
He asks how powerful it is I say 160w
He says "What?! I **** more power than that!"
I was like WHAT! You're a teacher how are you so RUDE!

Not in disagreement that it's annoying, but this example isn't another bassist doing it... just someone with bass in hand. Besides, that song falls into the one riff a lot of people know, or think they know... such as "Smoke on the Water" or the Hallelujah Chorus in classical music.

bhass 12-28-2008, 11:18 AM "The E and the A string is all a bass player should need to do the job properly,If you want to play fancy stuff on the skinny strings then you should be playing lead guitar.I also have another standard bass that I have pulled the d and g strings off the guitar but it has no impact live like this beast."
Or maybe you can't build a bass properly?
jsingles 12-28-2008, 11:48 AM "i can play donna lee"
I am so happy for you...
lancimouspitt 12-28-2008, 04:37 PM Not in disagreement that it's annoying, but this example isn't another bassist doing it... just someone with bass in hand. Besides, that song falls into the one riff a lot of people know, or think they know... such as "Smoke on the Water" or the Hallelujah Chorus in classical music.
Yeah that's very true.
just a personal pet peeve.LOL:)
NoobOnRoad 12-28-2008, 08:31 PM when a seller say ''Primus is not real slap man... THIS IS SLAP!!!'' and ''proceed to a oh my god so complicated wooten style slapping'' and im like wow... you've lost a sale.

This is that link. Or, are you saying you hate to see other bassistis type that in response to a question? That's a practice I don't like.
HashbrownCOBM 12-28-2008, 11:52 PM Hey wait, didn't I say that to you? Not my fault your tone sucks!
:D:bassist::hiding:
This has nothing to do with the thread, I just gotta tell you man that it's the best fecking bass face I've ever seen. Ever.:bassist:

I get that from other bassists too, I play a 6. Once you get out of the idea of just 4 strings, it really doesn't matter if you're playing a 5, 6, 7, or more. If you tune all the strings in 4ths it's the same finger patterns, just with more range. I guess some people are just stuck on the "I only need 4 strings" thing. Yeah, I only "need" 4 strings too, but I hate detuning and making big jumps up the neck, so I play 6.
Basstovsky 12-29-2008, 11:06 AM Why do you play a SX? its just a fender rip-off!
-cause fender doesnt make a jazz like this one anymore?
(as far as i know only maple blocked neck they offer is on the geddy that costs 700 more than my sx, plus i can do some small mods and not worry about resale value)
Peavey? don't they just make beginner stuff?
(I play through an old (late 70s early 80s) peavey tube amp, it may not specifically be designed for bass but i love the sound it puts out)
EMG pickups, aren't those for guitarists?
-so i like their hi-fi clarity and low-end punch in one of my basses, sue me
and the inevitable can i touch/play/use/borrow that? as everyone else has already posted
MatticusMania 12-29-2008, 11:39 AM It's like being an artist and not knowing who Picasso, Rembrandt, or Michaelangelo are. You may not be a fan of their style, but you should at least know who the pioneers of your craft are.
Why? Not trying to fight you, but really, why?
I think it would be better NOT to know who the pioneers of your craft are, leaving your slate clean to completely create your own, uninfluenced art. Personally, Ive never listened to Jaco, and dont intend to anytime soon, unless he happens to cross my path.

Because nowhere in human history has one person started with nothing and invented something better than what is already around? It's not like some caveman just looked around the world with no influences and invented an automobile.
No great artist starts with a completely blank mind and clean slate. Everybody has influences that they borrow from, and the more varied your influences are the more raw material you have to work with to create your own musical statements.

Says who? Someone has to be the origin, correct?

Tell you what, post up some truly original, genre-less music with no obvious influences. I'd love to hear some that isn't experimental garbage.

unbridled 12-29-2008, 10:40 PM "Yeah, that amp blew a fuse but I didn't have a replacement. So, I just shoved a bunch of tinfoil in it"
True Story
The backline for this gig was provided by the venue and the "soundman" (whose band had played the night before when HE blew the fuse) told me this right before the first set. I had a DI and said I could just use that instead of frying the amp but he said he'd "done it hundreds of times" and was sure there'd be no problem.
1/2 way through the first set, I noticed a loud "pop" and smelled the dreaded frying amp smell. The soundman got reamed really hard when the club owner showed up at the end of the night. The owner was a bassist himself and had just bought the amp a month before.
