I was just watching "Grace Potter and the Nocturnals" on Soundstage. The bass player had a Fender jazz, (as far as I could tell), and an Ampeg fridge setup. Nice thumpy sound, but growl too. Sounded like flats when he slid down the neck.
Since I don't have a P-bass I thought I might get flats for the JB-2 for a thumper. I saw a post a while back where Chef said LaBellas. Any other opinions on flats.
Since I mentioned P what used G&L most sounds like a P?

Most dudes get La Bella Deep Talkin' Flats, Thomastick Infeld Jazz Flats, or D'Addario Chromes. They all have different characteristics.

The LB-100 is probably the most P like of the G&Ls, though I'm sure some of the other guys here who have way more basses than me can chime in and provide much better advice.

Got TI Jazz Flats on my JB-2. Gives it a nice vintage jazz bass tone, with a deep, thumpy sound. YOu can dial in some growl with the bridge pickup & tone.

Played it at a gig last week & my wife mentioned how deep that bass sounded compared with my other G&Ls. (with this group, I usually play an L-2000e or an SB-2).

I use flats on most my gigs cuz they have that big round tone that works well in blues or country. I have a friend who bought (yeah he's got money) a 57 p bass. It had rounds, sounded good. then the next week he brought it by with flats.... omg, that's THE sound... when you think of classic pbass.
re a G&L p bass,the SB would be it. I have an SB2 that sounds great. I hate the sound of the bridge pickup all the way one, but I like putting some of it in. That same friend who does lots of session work also has a 62 p Bass (and some other from the 70s). He said the SB2 sounded like a 60s bass.
