Anyone here use a .040 for a high c? The thin sound of a .030 is realy starting to irritate me and I thought mabe I could get a beter sound with a .040. I'm thinking of buying a 5 string set 130-.045 and buying a .040 single. Anyone out there do this? I use DR's and their 6 string sets only come in .030 :( Any thoughts?

Sorry, I've never done that. My guess is that it would make the tension really high though, as you are going to tune a string that was designed to be pitched at G and tighten it up all the way to C.

35 is ok.. DR sells single 35 C as far as I know
I use d'addarios with 32 C.

i wonder what brand has the thickest or thickest sounding c string. i've used roto's with a .035 c, but they are too mid scooped and they die way faster than dr's:(

I think that pickup height and very careful EQ might be the best way to get round tone from a C. After all. it's the thickness, roughly, of a guitar a string. TI And D'Addario each have sets with a .032 C string.

FWIW, I snapped a .45 trying to tune it up to C. I now use mentioned D'Addarios with the .32 on the bottom, and it sounds more like a natural extension of the bass's lower range than an actual guitar string.

I like the standard Daddario XL six string set, 32-130. That and the fodera set of equal gauge are the best sounding C's I've heard. If you're looking for thicker sounding, I'd definitely stick with nickel too.
