VIEW FULL LIVE VERSION : *RARE* Fender Hollowbody Thinline Precision
PRICE DROP!
This is my beloved CIJ Fender Hollowbody Thinline Precision bass. It was sold only in Japan and I believe discontinued in 2005. It's the first I've ever seen for sale on Talkbass. I just don't play 4's anymore so I'd rather turn it into a 5.
Aside from the killer hollow P body and great burst/finish, it has a tele headstock with reverse vintage tuners, and a clear pickguard. A jazz and mudbucker pickup make it even more unique. It plays flawlessly and the build quality and detail is excellent. In this regard it is at least equal to any American Fender I've ever played.
It is dead mint with the exception of one micro finish chip/crack right where the body meets the neck pocket. The pocket is so tight I can only assume it happened during installation of the neck. I captured it in a picture - it's very tiny but you can kind of see it. Hardly worth mentioning, but mint is a big word. I bought it from the original owner who used it in a studio a few times.
PRICE DROP! $900 + shipping costs. USPS money order preferred.

RiddimKing 11-17-2007, 10:58 AM Cool bass!
Perfect bass for a darkstar.
EduardoK 11-18-2007, 12:32 AM Very nice !
What is the nut width and neck shape/tapper?
It is 1.5" at the nut. I'm not sure what you'd call the neck profile, but it feels like a jazz neck. :bassist:
watspan 11-19-2007, 07:24 AM bump for a rare bird, indeed!
Perfect bass for a darkstar.
Yes, I've always been tempted. However, the existing bucker gives a really thick sound that my other basses don't have.
tombowlus 11-21-2007, 07:52 AM Bump for a unique and wonderful instrument!
midmoto 11-21-2007, 08:48 AM Ohh Darkstar
This bass is calling the Darkstar to it.

Personally, I would never modify a bass this rare.

+1 If the holidays weren't aproaching, I would on this one!!! :hmm:
rduckwor 11-21-2007, 08:57 AM So are these true HB's or are they "chambered"?
watspan 11-21-2007, 09:21 AM +1 If the holidays weren't aproaching, I would on this one!!! :hmm:
what better holiday gift than a new bass:D
true HB vs chambered? I'm not sure what that means, but I'm gonna say I believe it's chambered Maybe tombowlus will chime in with the correct answer.

+1 If it didn't have the J-pickup at the bridge, I might consider the Darkstar. But as it is, I really like the interaction of these two pickups.
So are these true HB's or are they "chambered"?
I'm not sure what distinguishes the two. If you can help with definitions, I'll let you know.
spiritbass 11-28-2007, 08:38 PM Beautiful. How much does she weigh?

Beautiful. How much does she weigh?
Ken
She weighs light. :D I'll have to put her on my bathroom scale, but with the hollowbody it's really light. Makes me want to take a Dremel tool to my Stingray....just kidding.

Redhot6 12-03-2007, 07:48 PM personally, put a darkstar and kent armstrong lipstick tube pickup in the bridge, like the jerry scheff bass.

Sure, send me some money and then send pictures when you are done.;):D
Fretless Bill 01-03-2008, 01:25 PM I have one of these basses. I got the last one Ishibashi had and it's in the blueburst finish. Great bass with a thick rich tone. I've used mine with rounds and flats and it sounds good with both. I too concidered putting a Darkstar in mine but it's just fine the way it is. The one thing I changed though was the bridge pup. I like to blend on the + side of the bridge pup and being single coil (bridge pu is an American vintage) I'de get some hum off it. Playing loud it didn't matter but at lower volumes it would annoy me so I popped in a Bart dual coil. The neck pickup is dead quiet solo.
Anyway, a great bass and a rare bass at a reasonable price. These basses new weren't cheap, in fact, when I bought mine it was the most expensive bass Fender Japan had in the line up. Not many were made and very few ever found their way to the states. If I didn't already have one I'de buy this one rather I could afford it or not.

Fretless Bill 01-29-2008, 05:48 PM There was an earlier post asking about the weight. I can't speak for this one but mine scales out at 7lb 13oz. I wouldn't think they would vary too much.

Thanks, that sounds about right, give or take a 1/2 pound.:D I need to get a scale...
watspan 01-30-2008, 02:29 PM they're nice and light for sure-bump! I've been tweaking mine and put nylon tapewounds on it and played it for a set at my last 2 blues gigs--nice thumpy/woody/uprightish tone! very unique and rare instruments.
Fretless Bill 02-01-2008, 06:57 PM I bet tapes would sound good on these. I tried a set of Steve Harris flats on mine and didn't like em (they're much better on my Godin acoustibass fretless). Thought I might try some chromes on it and stick a peice of foam under the strings at the bridge and make it realllllly thumpy.

The bucker at the neck produces big THICK bass. I know a Dark Star at this spot would be even better, but it's such a unique bass I hesitate changing it. The jazz at the bridge produces more clarity, definition, and overall tonal range. Using the jazz with just a bump of the bucker is my favorite setting...killer tone.:bassist: I believe Watspan put tapewounds on his and really digs it. This is strung with rounds.
