I've been waiting all day for the video to be posted to the web. One of our fellow TBers posted it for me in another thread, which let me know it was up and running. Thanks very much, Howlin' Hanson!
I'm just glad I didn't get any Jabba The Hut Chin! LOL!
I felt like we did well. The anchor who interviewed us is an avid biker, so we switched our song order to feature a song about ridin', which pleased him a *lot*! They don't show the commercial bumps in the video, but they do show the entire feature song.
We got up at 3 a.m. to go do this, but it is worthwhile. People for 150 miles around see this program. I feel like we'll get plenty of good work from this.
I know lots of people don't dig Fox, and I'm not a big fan of some of their national broadcasts. But our local Fox affiliate does a lot to support local music, and their weekday morning live music spots do so much for so many bands here. Everyone at the station, from the anchors to the producer to the crew, were just wonderful to us, and made it a great experience. Its a wonderful opportunity, and I'm so thankful we were able to have it!

Hope you get on national TV next time, eh? :P
Thanks! You know, I hardly slept the night before...too keyed up. But once we got up there, we just pretended we were playing the local ice house, and everything fell into place. The people in the studio made it very easy.
National tv...lol! Hey, you never know! Ol' Simon C. may decides he digs us! LOL! :D:bassist:
Joe told us about an English band they had on during SXSW. If you ever make it across the pond during the festival, you just never know...they could feature you, too! If the woman who books the bands digs you, you're in.

txbasschik 11-20-2007, 07:59 AM This is one reason why I miss living in Austin!
Yeah, its one of the reasons I've never been able to bring myself to move away. Who else features live music on the local news every morning? :)
It was a lot of fun. And then I came home and slept for four hours. LOL!

Thanks! I wish every community had something like this. Its such a help...gets your music out to lots and lots of people. People who don't use myspace, or go to bars, but who buy music to listen to, or who go to festivals, or who have the money to give private parties. And the band doesn't spend a dime for this publicity! Awesome. Truly awesome.

Thanks hon! We're hoping to hear from a certain large venue southeast of the city, which markets strongly to bikers, pays well, and whose venue name references a woman, and wild pork-on-the-hoof. ;) We've been trying to get them to pay attention for months now. ;)
Cherie :bassist:
txbasschik 11-20-2007, 08:06 AM Very cool!!!
Thanks! I feel very fortunate...the whole band does...to have gotten the opportunity and to have it go so well. When we finish our cd, we'll go back on the program...so we'll be back on tv in spring. Can't wait! :hyper:

Congrats, very cool.
BassmanDk 11-20-2007, 08:28 AM This whole tread is one of the reasons i like TB: one TB'er is happy with a show and other support her, giving advice and maybe helping her band further. Wonderful!
And what a nice segment on tv - good anchor by the way, he seems int. in the band and remembers Cherie.
A lucky break indeed.

Congrats, very cool.
LOL!!! Sure baby! Just don't go sellin' it on eBay, 'k? :D
I love doing that song in a good biker bar, especially when we've got the sax and the harp. We draw the song out, with leads for everyone, rockin' it, and the bikers go nuts!
We were going to do a funk tune, which would have been good, too, but since Joe's a biker, we knew it would tickle him to hear "I Love My Harley". Sweet!
Cherie :hyper::bassist:
sb69coupe 11-20-2007, 08:44 AM Cherie, congrats! Nice work on the bass lines too, you kept the song moving nicely, great feel. You guys sounded really good.
SteveC 11-20-2007, 08:46 AM Nice spot. Good plugs for your shows, and they let you play longer than 20 or 30 seconds.

Thanks! Yeah, they're great about giving the bands plenty of time. You get two 20-second bumps, a full tune, and if there's time, you play the show out. Every morning...so awesome!
Cherie :)
Foxworthy925 11-20-2007, 05:40 PM That's awsome- playing on tv and all. Nice. You all sounded great, though I do wish your bass was louder in the mix.

txbasschik 11-20-2007, 10:44 PM That's awsome- playing on tv and all. Nice. You all sounded great, though I do wish your bass was louder in the mix.
The sound engineer there seems to be of the "felt but not heard" school. He mixes *all* bassists too low. I was thankful that I could be heard at all...I didn't expect to be. I watched eps for weeks, studying the show's structure, mixing, etc.
Rather than let them DI me, which is what they seemed to expect, I brought my 4x10. This gave me some control over my sound. I was *just* loud enough that they couldn't mix me out. :smug: As a three-piece band, it was vital that I be heard, so we made sure I would be. :bassist:
Cherie :):bassist:
txbasschik 11-20-2007, 10:46 PM Nicely done Cherie!!!!!!!!
God it's hard to groove that early in the morning Lol. You made it look easy though!!!!!!!!
Thanks hon! By the time we played, I think we'd been up for about four hours. When we got home, I ate breakfast (after being up, by now, for seven hours), fell into bed and slept like the dead for four hours. Oh, it was *so* early!
Thanks for the sweet compliment...I was shaking with caffiene (Kona blend coffee). Pretty sure that's what held us together...LOL!
Cherie :bassist:
txbasschik 11-20-2007, 10:48 PM I wish you were louder in the mix though, I thought I heard some tasty stuff there. It's nice to see one of our own do good.
Thanks! Yeah, that engineer always mixes the bass really, really low. "Felt but not heard". Meh. I made sure to bring the 4x10 so I wouldn't disappear. I've seen bassists on the show who were just *wailing* away, playing hard rock, fretting all over the neck...and ya couldn't hear a single note. They wanted to DI me, but....nope, I brought my rig, thanks! ;)
Cherie :bassist:
txbasschik 11-20-2007, 10:50 PM That was kool Cherie and You guys get my support.
Thanks!!! Its a kinda big deal, locally, to get on the show, so we were really thrilled to get the nod. I'm very excited by the prospect of more work from this...yay, more gigs! :hyper:
jrduer's been on, too, with Shelli Coe...check 'em out in the video archives...they were on in October. (Shelli is David Allen Coe's daughter.)
Cherier :bassist:
txbasschik 11-20-2007, 10:53 PM Sounds great, Cherie! Let me know if you ever play in the San Antonio area, would love to hear you live!
Thanks very much! We'd love to play down there! We don't know much about the venues, there. If you think of any where we would be a good fit, PM me. For real...we're ready to stretch out a bit.
Cherie :bassist:
txbasschik 11-20-2007, 11:23 PM Cherie - that was great.
How long did it take you to pick out that t-shirt? :D
Thanks hon!
The t-shirt...LOL! I must have tried on a dozen things before I settled on that. I was going for a bit "dressed up", but then decided that my favorite would be best, because then I'd feel comfortable.
That bit about "I got the butterflies" never even crossed my mind until I watched the video. LOL! :D
Cherie :bassist:
txbasschik 11-20-2007, 11:26 PM I LIKE it!
Good for you Cherie. Congrats!
And I don't generally like blondes, but your singer is a babe.
Thank you sugar, I'm glad you like it! We've been talking about taking a couple of gigs up your way, since the drummer has family in Ft. Worth, during the summer. If we get some, I'll let you know.
Then you can meet our hot singer in person! ;) She is gorgeous, for certain. If you see that woman in a crowd, your eye just goes right to her. Excellent quality in a front person! :D
Cherie :bassist:
txbasschik 11-20-2007, 11:28 PM Awsome Sounded Great
Thank you! Don't you just love it when you finish a song, and you can feel in your bones that it was tight? Man, its better than any substance, and right up on a par with perfect lovin.
Cherie :)
txbasschik 11-20-2007, 11:30 PM Congrats. That sounded goooooood! The bass looks awesome too, couldn't be a better fit.
Thank you, hon! I can't wait 'til the new cd is ready. That cut will be on it, as well as other originals. This band was such a struggle at first, but over time, its become very comfortable, and we've gotten so much tighter. I think I'll keep 'em. ;):ninja::D
Cherie :bassist:
txbasschik 11-20-2007, 11:31 PM Schweeet! :bassist:

txbasschik 11-20-2007, 11:32 PM Gotta luv that yella Lulu! You should write a song "I love my Lulu!"
Nice job!
She's purdy, ain't she? I think the cameraman thought so, too. LOL!
And strings to match, too! I picked up some DR Mellow Yellows at NAMM, along with some other strings. I really like 'em. I have a couple other sets to try out, but I'm thinking the DR's may end up my favorite. Lovely strings.
I Love My LuLu!!!
Cherie :bassist::hyper:
txbasschik 11-20-2007, 11:33 PM You guys ROCK! Great job! :bassist:

Hey, I'm impressed you guys could all get up that early and put it together. My singer and I would prolly both have to just stay up all night, and I don't think that'd make for pretty TV...
txbasschik 11-20-2007, 11:49 PM Hey, I'm impressed you guys could all get up that early and put it together. My singer and I would prolly both have to just stay up all night, and I don't think that'd make for pretty TV...
Honestly, I think we were held together by Kona blend and sheer determination. I never did sleep well, the night before. Neither did the singer. Drummer slept like the dead...go figure. LOL!
The production team at the station made it easy, too. They have a rolling drum riser in the loading area. You get the drums set up, then put the amps in place. They open a bay door, and the whole thing rolls right into the studio. They do all the sound setup and mic'ing, so the band can have a coffee or a water and relax. They take the band through every step of the program, so the musicians don't have to worry about when to start or stop. They couldn't have been nicer, or more professional.
They invited us back in spring! :hyper:
Cherie :bassist:
Bassic83 11-21-2007, 12:00 AM That's awesome! You grooved, and looked very confident and relaxed! Great job!
I know how the TV thing can be, did a couple of them in 91-92, with David Spann in Austin (forget which channel it was now), and my "bass rig" was a Peavey MicroBass amp, a Countryman DI, and David's Aria ProII bass...we took calls after we played on air, and someone asked me how I got that huge sound out of that itty-bitty box...I said it was all in the hands! :D Wish I still had that tape...:(
Jeff Martinez 11-21-2007, 12:03 AM The sound engineer there seems to be of the "felt but not heard" school. He mixes *all* bassists too low. I was thankful that I could be heard at all...I didn't expect to be. I watched eps for weeks, studying the show's structure, mixing, etc.

At least we could hear you a bit. More definitely would have been better.
Good stuff. Not usually my kind of music, but I was totally bobbing my head to the groove.
quadebass17 11-21-2007, 12:07 AM semi-hollow precision bass????
Bass Pleasures 11-21-2007, 12:16 AM Nicely done, Cherie!
You sounded great and you looked great.
Bassists are the coolest, we all know that.
Lady bassists are cooler still.
seanm 11-21-2007, 12:18 AM I listened on my laptop so I couldn't hear the bass. The little 1" speakers kill *all* the bass. I'll have to listen to it again properly tomorrow.
But I am guessing by the grin at the end of the video that you where happy with your playing :D
And I agree with others about the early start. I usually go to bed around 2 or 3. Getting up at 3am means no sleep at all
Anyway, congrats on your big day. The singer seemed to be turning towards you and including you in the song. You looked good up there! Hope you get some good gigs from this.

{{{big grin!}}} Thanks very much!
Yep, I was very happy with it. The song just felt so *right* for the occasion. It was hard for the singer and I not to do the Happy Girl Squeal afterwards, but we had to keep quiet for the news people.
She and I watch each other a lot. Drummer and I have gotten to where we don't have to look at each other very often, so I watch the singer for cues. She may cut a lead, she may bring a bridge in early...so we watch. And we were having fun, smiling at each other. What fun!
Cherie :bassist:

Thanks hon! Very reassuring...I get kinda paranoid how I look on video. That yallah bass helps, all bright and shiny! We were so pleased with the sound, and I'm glad it comes through on the recording.
SQUEEEEE!!! :hyper:
Cherie...Lady Bass :bassist:
txbasschik 11-21-2007, 12:31 AM semi-hollow precision bass????
Pretty much. Its a Waterstone Lulu, with P-pups. Man, I love that thing! I've had it almost a year now, and still can't get enough of having it in my hands, playing.
Neato, huh?
Cherie :bassist:
ShirazBop 11-21-2007, 12:32 AM Congratulations: Way cool and way to go! Great full sound groove and tasty bass lines Cherie!

yes, very cool!
where did you find it?
its very bright and give a good feel to the band/song before you even play! and it sounds amazingly good for the semi-decent video recording. What strings do you play with??
txbasschik 11-21-2007, 12:34 AM At least we could hear you a bit. More definitely would have been better.
Good stuff. Not usually my kind of music, but I was totally bobbing my head to the groove.
Thanks!!! Yeah, I get frustrated, listening to the bands and never *quite* hearing the bass, on that show. Someone needs to speak to that engineer. I see someone working, playing with their soul...and they can't be heard. Its a shame, really. They need to always bring the big cab, so they can't be cut out entirely!
Not your fave genre, and you still liked it...man, that is high praise! Thank you very much!
Cherie :bassist:

Thanks very much! My knees were shaking at first, but they stopped. I can thank the crew for that. They did everything possible to put us at ease. They also thanked us for not coming in hung over. Evidently, a lot of bands do. :D
David Spann...was that on the old Austin Access? We know a guy...I'll ask him if he remembers those shows, and whether he knows where that old footage might be. I'd love to see you wring good tone out of that setup with your bare hands! Man, I'm impressed by that, truly.

Cherie :bassist:Ooooh! Post it if you can find it! :hyper: I'd LOVE to see that band again...we were good! Very much an Eric Johnson-type guitar, funk-rock bass, and the drummer, depending on which one you find, was either a really good 18-year old, or a very experienced and grooving percussion teacher who also played in the orchestra around Austin.
txbasschik 11-21-2007, 11:25 AM yes, very cool!
where did you find it?
its very bright and give a good feel to the band/song before you even play! and it sounds amazingly good for the semi-decent video recording. What strings do you play with??
Actually, I won it! :hyper: I entered one of those online contests on bassgirls.com, in their Freezer section. Answer the trivia question correctly, tell us about your band, and you are in the drawing, kinda thing. I threw in an mp3 for good measure, and promptly forgot all about it. Never won anything before, and didn't really expect to this time, either.
More than three months pass, and I have *truly* forgotten even entering the contest by now. UPS shows up, as I am folding laundry, so my drummer husband took the package. I heard him yell from the front room, "HONEY!!! WHAT THE HE^^ DID YOU BUY!?!?"
He'd opened the box. I saw the bass, and couldn't figure where it had come from...and then remembered the contest! :hyper:
I have adored my Lulu ever since! I've had nothing but wonderful from this bass. It has plenty of punch and volume, the action is lovely, and the weight is perfect for me. It is a mid-priced instrument, but the quality feels like a more-expensive bass. Waterstone makes a *great* product, I'll swear by it! Not only is Lulu bright and pretty, but she also comes in a slick, shiny red. I Love My LuLu!!!
Thanks for the compliment on the sound! I'm thrilled it was able to cut through in the mix without sounding snotty. I was worried about being mixed down way to low, but Lulu and my 4x10 saved the day. :hyper:
I have DR Mellow Yellows on it, and I love them. Best string I have ever used! I had Auroras on there, and they were nice, but I like the DR's better. They get great tone with the bass, and they stay in tune better. I have a set of S.I.T.'s to try out, but unless they just really outstrip the DR's, I'll be returning to my Jersey friends next time I buy strings. ;)

txbasschik 11-21-2007, 11:27 AM Ooooh!
I'll ask Andre next time I see him. He is connected with the people who did Austin Access, and I believe he can look into their archives. He does video work for us (the Baby A's gig was taped by him, as well as our ROT Rally performance), and I'll be seeing him again soon, I'm sure. PM me with as much info from that taping as you can remember...band name, approx dates, etc. It will help him in locating it.
Cherie :)
quadebass17 11-21-2007, 11:27 AM ah nice! i'm going to research one of those...

thats really sweet about the contest though!
Those are great strings. i've used them before..
What 4X10 did you use??
txbasschik 11-21-2007, 11:30 AM Congratulations: Way cool and way to go! Great full sound groove and tasty bass lines Cherie!
Thank you so much! I've been looking for that "full" sound for a while now, and with the DR's, I think I've found the right combination of bass, amp settings, and strings to get it.

I have a Behringer Ultrabass (the one with the aluminum cones), running through an SWR 2004 head.
Do look into Waterstone. They've been just awesome. Some of the guys here know the owner, and say that he's a very nice, standup guy. He's been wonderful to me, writing me directly via MySpace, and giving me a featured photo on their web page. If I ever buy another bass, I will be looking to them, as well as if my daughter ever decides to play bass or guitar. A great product at a fair price...can't beat it!

Dave R 11-21-2007, 11:49 AM Mon Cherie, you were mahvelous! And you were not a victim of "bass cloak of invisibility" syndrome! The cameraman gave you plenty of time.
And no wonder, either. Good bassist, good bass, good song. I enjoyed it.
WOO HOO! Very cool, Cherie!

THanks honey! Yeah, that cameraman gave me a buncha time. I wonder if he's a bassist? :)
Thanks very much...the experience was so nice, I can't wait to do it again! Well...'cept for the getting up at 3 a.m. part. LOL!

Thanks!!! Maybe we should have a TV Appearance thread, where people can post when they're on the tube? That'd be cool, I think. Everyone has, like, you know, video from gigs. But tv appearances are different...special. It would be great to know when all the TBers are on, and watch them via the tube or the web!

Dave R 11-21-2007, 04:15 PM Jul mentioned an acoustic set coming up...do you play your Lulu for acoustic sets, or will you use an upright?
UncleBalsamic 11-21-2007, 04:19 PM Nice one! Great songs as well!
txbasschik 11-23-2007, 08:41 AM Jul mentioned an acoustic set coming up...do you play your Lulu for acoustic sets, or will you use an upright?
I wish. They don't take me along on those. They say the promoter they are using to get those shows only wants the duo, so...not much I can do about it.
I have an acoustic/electric bass guitar, but I need some stuff for it that I just can't afford to buy right now. Still...I could use the Lulu, setting the tone appropriately. But...I still can't go, so its moot, I s'pose. C'est la vie, c'est la guerre.:(
I'd love an upright. I like their sound, and their percussive qualities. A 3/4 dawg would suit very well.

txbasschik 11-23-2007, 08:51 AM Nice one! Great songs as well!
Thanks very much! Jul sure knows how to write a song. I love her stuff, and am happy to be playing it. :)
We played at a local jam Wednesday night, and there was a huge crowd! People had seen the tv spot, saw the jam advertised, and came out in droves. We did a short set with all our non-acoustic originals, including the feature song from the tv spot, and a brand-new song that we'd used for one of the commercial bumps. They loved it!!! We even had people who *never* come to this bar...they're regulars elsewhere...show up just because of the tv feature.
We had a *very good* guitar player in for the jam who just moved here from Mexico. The dude's an amazing player...great style, knows when to lay back, when to come on strong, totally fearless with new material. *Really* enjoyed jamming with him.
He heard us, jammed with us, and was just over the moon, his jaw just about hitting the floor during the original set. "I'm so lucky to be here, with all these musicians and all this great music! I can't wait to play with you again!" We'll be getting together with him again soon...we may have found a lead player we can really work with. :)
I predict plenty of good gigs comin' on! :hyper:

Great job Cherie. You really looked like you were having fun.
On the other hand, from the "Other Bassists at the Gig" thread and others I've read it seems like maybe it's time for you to find a new band with musicians who respect you and will treat you as an equal.

Thanks! It *was* fun. The crew they have at that tv station, and the anchors, make what could be a huge hassle into a wonderful experience. They make it so easy to relax and have fun...it felt like we were playing our local bar, but without the smoke. LOL!
As for the band...sigh.:rollno: The one-month break we took in October is now becoming "through January, at least". We aren't even going to practice, or finish recording, anytime soon. The singer's only interested in taking those acoustic gigs right now...the ones where I'm not "necessary". (Must speak to them about that...local friends and fans think I'm playing it. They'll show up, and I won't be there, and I think that's probably not good.)
They *know* I want to work, and that I need that gig money. I've said so, in so many words. I guess if they respected their bassist, that bassist would be getting gigs with them, huh?
I visited my guitarist neighbor...she whose band never wants to take gigs, either. She's in! That's very happy-making, since I need someone else to sing besides just me. We work well together, and our pedal steel friend thinks we sound lovely as the birds when we sing together.
I need to contact that drummer I mentioned in the other thread, and see if I can put together a jam with that group. See what happens. They're all good musicians, and I've either been in bands with or jammed with all of them, so we know each other. If we click, and everyone's interested in playing out, this will work! I'll let ya know how it goes! :bassist::hyper:
Hubby thinks we should call ourselves The Suicide Snipers. (He's been watching that History Channel thing about The Battle of Tarawa...:D)

Cherie's band troubles with Chrome Wheels should be a forum sticky by now.
Go get yourself a band that loves ya, sister!
txbasschik 11-30-2007, 09:15 AM Gah! Don't tell me you've got band troubles? :( This isn't the 3 piece from TV is it?
Its a case of no gigs, no coming along on acoustic gigs, no rehearsals until further notice, and the old bassist showing up quite a lot lately. I figure, form a 2nd group just to have gigs, you know? When CW is ready to go again, if they still want me, I'm here. If not, for whatever reason, then...well, I've got a 2nd project that can become a primary project if it needs to.
I gotta make my ends. If I'm going to avoid a full-time office job, I need to take gigs.
Cherie
Bassic83 11-30-2007, 09:33 AM I'd skip the CW...they don't seem to want you around. The bands that have stability around here are the bands that all hang out off the gig, and treat each other as family. You don't have that connection, from what we can see. Get your own thing together, you seem to be operating from a position of power at present. You know that they're unstable, you know they don't want you around, you know that other players/bands DO want you around, so take advantage of it and get crackin' on the new band, and book gigs at places the CW plays. Book as much as you can, then when CW sees you playing out in "their places", they'll likely either try to get you back, or sever ties completely. Be too busy with your band to give them the time of day- that'd be the best thing! :)

Its going to take some time to get the 2nd band going. They want me to front it, so I'm making myself busy learning songs that I can both sing and play, and that will satisfy the other players. They are more than welcome to suggest things to me, but if I can't sing them and play them, someone else will need to. The 2nd guitarist can sing, but the lead guitar and the drummer can't.
You know, I really like CW's music. Truly. And I think we sound great! We could be doing so much right now, but we're not!!! I don't understand the apparent full-on band shutdown in light of the success of the tv spot. I mean...I know they're busy, but...dang!!! It does look like a shutout, huh?
