Any good new punk bassists? It seems that a lot of the newer punk or emo bands have pretty "basic" bassists. Im always looking for cool bands to buy music from so any suggestions of any good new punk bassists?

I really like the bassist of Someday Never, you probably havent heard of them but if your looking for some cool new music, check um out.

Check out the band Whole Wheat Bread. Their bass player is currently in jail, but there're a good punk band, i recommend them.

How new? If you mean from late 90s onward I'd say Hot Water Music, who has been around. They disbanded a couple years ago and most members play as The Draft now, but there's a few reunion shows currently... Jason Black really knows how to stand out yet fit well in the pocket.

I also like American Steel. Their newest album is quite good and John Peck writes some good lines.

Rancid.

And thats pretty much the only "punk" band I even say because most of them beyond that are terrible imo.

I know it's not punk, but the bass player of Interpol does some really good things, a lot of his lines could be punk. Check him out.

well... how about not a new band at all, but a veteran punk act that just put out a record who just so happen to have always had amazing bassists? Talking about New Model Army -- they always had some interesting bass parts. The new record is called "High" and came out a couple months ago, though the band's best work (IMHO) was back in the mid to late 80's, though I can enjoy anything from their catalog.

!!! (yeah, that's the band name) has some pretty cool bass playing, they're "dance punk." Along the lines of Gang of Four, maybe Talking Heads a bit.

Miser, a band from Dallas, is great.
Daughtry (not punk, but has a good bassist)
Angels and Airwaves has kinda stepped it up
The Toadies(another dallas band from the 90s, my all time fav)
Burden Brothers (toadies reformed, more rock)

You are ignorant.

Like Deluge said, check out The Minutemen. Mike Watt, who used to have a forum on this thread, was the bassplayer of that band.

As far as newer bands, I happen to dig Left Alone's "Dead American Radio", the bass is really great on that album. The new Weakerthan's album "Reunion Tour" is pretty swell too!

Daughtry (not punk, but has a good bassist)

Not to split hairs here, but Daughtry is a far cry from what most would consider punk. It's like, the epitome of corporate rock... he was a finalist on American Idol and plays hard rock tinged with country. I'm not commenting on the quality and he probably does have a good bassist, but it's just not punk rock.

Too many different opinions of what "punk" is in this day and age to really narrow it done to one source. If you want a good bass player who throws down the "I don't give a $*#%" attitude of old while retaining the bubble-gum pop the Ramones brought out, pick up Death From Above 1979's You're A Woman, I'm A Machine.

Wow, definitely not new, but yeah, he had some amazing basslines. They were such a weird band... first time I heard them I was kind of blown away since they were so bizarre yet incredibly technical for a bunch of weird wasted punks. A friend of mine used to have a VHS tape (released by Epitaph back in the early 90's) and it was full of amazing footage.

Joe Principe from RISE AGAINST

I really liked 88 Fingers Louie as well. In some ways I like them better than Rise Against. More personal, less preachy.

As for what "new" is supposed to mean, I say "boo" to the original poster for not really setting a definition or timespan for "new." Really, I could list anything from fugazi to Crimpshrine to Alkaline Trio. None of those bands are new in my book, but at least one of them would be considered new to someone else.

Never thought i'd see those guys getting love in a forum, but yeah, they were great (are they still around?)

I grew up seeing them all over Western Mass and then later on when I was living in Boston... man, haven't listened to those guys in forever, but I used to really like them. Definitely more ska than punk though. Or ska-punk, or whatever the 3rd wave stuff was called.

They have gotten quite big lately, pretty much a mainstay on Warped now and headlining their own solid tours. 200-400 a night every night about 250+ nights a year. They are currently supporting their latest album on the Riot Steady Tour w/ Whole Wheat Bread & The AKAs. They also have been getting a ton of AP articles lately.

Also, thanks Deluge.

I really like George from Voodoo Glow Skulls. His basslines are always groovy and he's great live. I also really dig the bassist from "The Ergs!" He reminds me of Karl Alvarez from The Descendents, who just happen to be my favorite band. Karl is a great bassist as well.

One of my biggest influences. Very strong player, solid in a live enviroment, maximum charisma AND He sings (and neither of his talents are compromised while doing both at the same time). All around nice guy and real person too! Most of his lines fit the band absolutely perfectly, and while they move around a lot I don't feel they really crowd or over complicate anything. Style all his own. Cheers to Chris # 2! :bassist:

Hot Water Music had some tasty basslines, and they might be new to you if you haven't heard em.

Personally, I'd rank Hunter from AFI pretty high on the list if you haven't checked out their old discography. The All Hallows EP is a good place to start, though it's a little more hardcore than most punk. Total Immortal, The Boy Who Destroyed the World, all fantastic basslines. Or check out Sacrifice Theory from The Art of Drowning, where his lines are slightly reminiscent of Matt Freeman from Rancid.

Death From Above 1979 but watch their live videos - they were so much better live than recorded. Some Dwarves albums have good bass but others don't - get the ones with Nick Oliveri (using the pseudonyms Rex Everything or Pierre Pressure). On the subject of Nick Oliveri his band Mondo Generator has some great punk bass. The Horrors are a great new band who I think of as the Sex Pistols but more talented and with an organ; give them a try.

I've mentioned these dudes at least once a day on talkbass this week, so I don't fell bad chiming in. Their new bassist is a total monster. I fought my way to the front to stand in front of him and gape last weekend in Columbus, which is something I rarely do these days (I'm gettin' to be an old dude, gimme a break). I also got to hang out with him for a while, and be a total fanboy about gear and recording and he's an ace dude. He also played on The Fullblast's last 2 CD's, which are both incredibly good, and FAST! It's sort of hard to track down their stuff, but if you can get it, it's well worth it.

I would definitely second the suggestion of Rancid, although it'd be difficult to consider them "new" unless you meant "after the punk boom of the 70s and 80s". Matt Freeman is effing incredible though, one of the best picking players around. I could imagine that some people would call his playing sloppy but it's fast and loose punk rock. Go to youtube and check out "Maxwell Murder" if they have a live video of it.

Have to agree that "punk" is a pretty subjective term, but hey....CJ from Whole Wheat Bread lots of fun to listen to, John Maurer (Social D, the good years), and definitely Mike Watt (Minutemen, fireHOSE, currently with Iggy and the Stooges, at least on the last album). I've noticed that Watt has been mentioned in a couple of threads and a quite a few folks hadn't heard of him. The RHCP dedicated Blood Sugar Sex Magik to him and he played on a few cuts for Kelly Clarkson, and everyone's heard the Jackass theme :)

not exactly punk(depending on definition), but check out MxPx's song Bass So Low. Mike is one of the reasons I started playing bass.

I'm not dissing Mike Herera because I like MxPx and list him as someone that I would consider an influence in some ways, I even think he is a pretty decent guy in the human non- musical aspect of life...But Mike is a guitar player, and his bass playing sounds like a guitar player playing bass to me...

I like a lot of his stuff and Chick Magnet is one of my warm up riffs that I play when I sound check.

When I think of good "punk" bass players I think of people like Matt Freeman, and I really like the work Trujillo did when he was with S.T. I thought he did some cool stuff back then.

I really haven't heard any "new" punk players that really make me take notice. None of them blow me away.

The Rod from Propagandhi is an awesome bass player, he's no Matt Freeman not knowing when to chill the $%^k out either, can be very subtle and keeps it simple for some bits, but when he can play some very very cool bass... and does!

As well as Rod been one of my favourite bass players, Propagandhi also have one of my favourite guitarists and my favourite drummer too, most likely why their my favourite band.

Also Dante from the Nerve Agents/Distillers is definitely worth mentioning. If you wanna take all the post-punk/post-hardcore stuff into account then people like Joe Lally from Fugazi and the guy from At The Drive in into account. Always get good bass playing from most Discord bands. Like someone before me said Lagwagon and Descendants are worth checking out, Fat Mike from NOFX is pretty awesome if yo ask me too but both NOFX and the Descendants are pretty old.

Oh and I'll indulge in the faux arrogance and mention myself :p; www.myspace.com/soundsofswami a lthough we're not so much punk more a mix of heavy rock, hardcore, post-hardcore and a bit of a metal influence.

there is only one punk bassist who ever came up with material that is extremely difficult for many bass players, some of it even for accomplished miller heads and jaco heads maybe. he's not new. and of course im talking about matt freeman of rancid. the typical evidence sighted to support this fact is maxwell murder, but the fact is, freeman has laced dozens and dozens of tracks with extremely brilliant and advanced bass work that has absolutely no parrallel in punk rock-not even close. examples include: white knuckle ride, holiday sunrise, axiom, not to regret(easier but still very cool), rejected, as one, maxwell murder, detroit, rats in the hallway(intro) and many more that i cant think of off the top of my head. you also cant overlook the fact that almost all of these bass lines were recorded in one take-hence the occasional slight sloppiness. not very many bassists period, let alone punk bassists, are going to be laying down lines like that on one take with no over-dubbing, studio tricks and not to mention no formal training. to ask if there are any good punk bassists without already knowing the only answer is matt freeman, is completely sacriligious and ignorant. too bad rancid sucks now. its truly sad what happened to them(time+drugs+alcohol=loss of inspiration). just my opinion by the way, so if you disagree save your pent up rage for somone else on talkbass:).

i saw Yellowcard's music video from their new album, and there bassline look quite complicated, atleast for a pop punk band anyway.
